    Wireless Routers for TDS

As of 2021, TDS charges rental fees primarily for WiFi service, and allows you to use their internet modem for free in many cases. Wireless routers are universally compatible with all service providers, so you just need to find one that supports the speed covered with your internet plan and has any additional features you may desire.

Range Extender or Extra WiFi Router is Often Recommended

Most ModemGuides.com customers need a wireless connection to go along with their modem, or are experiencing limited connectivity in their home as a result of using modem router combo that does not support the speeds or range needed for their daily use. As a result, our technicians often recommend adding an additional WiFi router – even if the modem being used already has built-in WiFi.

Why Use an Extra WiFi Router

We’ve seen from years of experience helping our customers set up their equipment that in many cases, the built in wireless router is simply just not powerful enough. We theorize that when so many components are smashed into one single unit, you do see a decrease in signal strength just from the interference. Regardless of the reason, though, our customers report that after adding a separate range extender, repeater or access point to  their network, there was a noticeable improvement in range and general connectivity.

So, if you’re having signal strength problems or are in the market for a modem and the ones you’re looking to purchase do not include WiFi, you may want to consider adding a WiFi router to your setup. Here’s some of the ones we carry that are both reliable and easy to install. For more wireless router options, you can also check out our WiFi Router shop.

Is TDS Telecom internet cable or DSL?

According to BroadbandNow.com, TDS offers services ranging from DSL broadband to Fiber, cable and copper internet services. These are supported in varying areas of North America with the greatest service areas in Wisconcin, Tenessee and Michigan.

What is the difference between an Modem and Router?

Modem: A box that connects to your service provider (ISP) and provides internet connection to your home network. This is required to facilitate internet connection in your home. Some models may have built in WiFi, and other features to help reduce the number of devices needed for modern internet usage.

Router: A box that connects to your modem, and then allows all of your wireless and wired devices to connect and use that internet connection, simultaneously. Additionally, the router allows your devices to talk to one another on the same network, allowing you to transfer files between devices, even if there’s no internet connection.

How to Find Your IP Address

This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.

    1. Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
    2. In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
    3. When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
    4. Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

How fast is TDS fiber internet?

Fiber internet from TDS supports internet download speeds up to 1000 Mbps or 1 Gbps.

Do I need both a Modem and Router?

Technically, no. Many choose to skip on the router and just use a Wired ethernet connection to provide internet to all of their devices. In our experience, we’ve only heard of people doing this for medical reasons or as a personal preference. Whatever your reason, modems are still required for internet connection with your ISP.

Here’s a brief overview on the difference between Modems and Routers:

Modem: A box that connects to your service provider (ISP) and provides internet connection to your home network. This is required to facilitate internet connection in your home. Some models may have built in WiFi, and other features to help reduce the number of devices needed for modern internet usage.

Router: A box that connects to your modem, and then allows all of your wireless and wired devices to connect and use that internet connection, simultaneously. Additionally, the router allows your devices to talk to one another on the same network, allowing you to transfer files between devices, even if there’s no internet connection.
