I just purchased the SBS8200 cable modem and only 1 gig port works at a time, but cant use two at a time? If I plug a single device in port 1 or 2 it works but if you have two plugged in it does not.

    1. ModemGuides says:

      Hi Ivan,

The number of Ethernet ports that are enabled for use likely depends on the firmware that your provider loaded on the device. You can try doing a factory reset on the SB8200 to see if that clears out those settings (you may have to do this with the coaxial cable disconnected to allow that firmware setting to be fully removed). Then you can set everything up with your second port before reconnecting the coaxial cable. That might work, otherwise we would recommend looking into getting some sort of network switch if you need additional ports to plug into. There are plenty available that are pretty inexpensive.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!

  2. Randall Hauk says:

I need to know if this model of modem is dual band (2.4Ghz & 5Ghz) capable. I have a printer that is in another part of my home so I connect to it with WiFi but I need the 2.4Ghz bandwidth.

    1. ModemGuides says:

      Hi Randall,

The SB8200 does not have any built-in WiFi, it’s just a standalone modem. If you need dual band wireless, you’ll need to buy a dual-band router to handle the WiFi. Browse our selection of dual-band Wifi Routers right here to narrow down what other specifications you may need for your service.

Hope that helps, but please reach out if you need any assistance picking out your equipment!

  3. Richard Palazzo says:

I’ve been using the SB8200 for two years now without a router, and haven’t encountered any problems. However, I keep reading that a router is essential for security. I only use ethernet cable, as I don’t feel well around wireless. I use both ports on the modem, one to my PC and the other to my TV. I use AVG for my internet security. Do you think a router is necessary, and if so, would the SB8200 pair with a wired-only router?

    1. ModemGuides says:

      Hi Richard!

You do not need to purchase a wireless router if you prefer a wired setup. A wired-only router will pair well with your SB8200 modem and fulfill your security needs. Two wired router models that are commonly recommended for their performance and security features are the Ubiquiti Networks EdgeRouter 4 (ER-4) and the Cisco RV345. Either of these would offer the additional layer of security you’re looking for, and they can be easily connected to your existing setup via Ethernet cables.

      Hope that helps!
