How to Activate Your Arris TM1602 with Optimum Cable

Activating your modem with Optimum is super quick and easy. You’ll need to set aside around 30 minutes for most activations to ensure you’re not feeling rushed.

  1. Plug in your modem to the power supply cable, then plug the power supply cable into the wall.
  2. Plug the coaxial cable into the wall, and then screw the other end into the coaxial port on the back of the modem.
  3. Wait 5 minutes for your modem to fully boot up. If your modem has built-in wireless, you’ll know your device is fully powered on once the wireless lights come on.
  4. Connect an ethernet cable into the back of your modem and then plug in the other end into your computer.
  5. Open a web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox or Safari) and type install.optimum.com into the URL web address bar at the top of the screen, then hit enter.
  6. To activate your modem you’ll need your 13-digit account number to register online, which you can find on your Optimum bill, a receipt from the Optimum store as well as several other places.
  7. Follow the on-screen steps to set up and activate your new modem.
  8. After set up is complete, you can now disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer or laptop and connect it into a wireless router if you’re using one for your wireless service.

Congratulations on activating your cable modem with Optimum service!

Here’s How to Install a WiFi Router Alongside your TM1602A

Installing a wireless router is generally much easier than setting up a new modem since you do not need to contact your internet service provider to get it set up. There is one exception to this: if you are currently renting a router from your provider, you’ll need to let them know that you’ve replaced it with one that you own so they can remove the rental from your account/bill.

  1. First, unbox your new router and plug it in to the power cable that it came with, plugging the other end of the power cable into the wall outlet.
  2. Next, wait a few minutes for your wireless router to boot up. You’ll know it’s finished when you see the WiFi light(s) come on on the front of the device.
  3. After your device is finished booting up, you can now connect to the wireless network or networks using the default WiFi password printed on the stickers on the back or bottom of your router.
    • You’ll be looking for the “SSID” or “Network Name” printed on your router as the WiFi name. This should show up in your wireless networks list on your WiFi-enabled device.
    • The WiFi password will also be printed on that same sticker on the back or bottom of your device. The WiFi password is usually referred to as the “Key/Passphrase” or the “pre-shared key” or some other variation of that. Please note that the password is case-sensitive, so be careful as you enter it to ensure it’s accurate!
  4. You can now enter the WiFi password discussed in step 3 to log into the wireless of your new router!
  5. Final step for installing your router is connecting it to your cable or DSL modem. All you need to do next is connect an ethernet cable going from one of the ports in the back of your modem into the WAN (grey) port on the back of your WiFi router. This will allow you to use the wireless connection of your WiFi router to access the internet.

Congratulations on connecting your new wireless router to your network!

Tips If You’re Having Trouble Getting Connected to WiFi

→ I can’t find the WiFi network name printed on my device in my available networks list.

Try doing a factory reset on your wireless router! Depending on where you purchased your router or what firmware has been loaded onto it, it may just need a reset to get the network name back to the factory default that’s printed on that sticker.

To reset your device, just hold down the reset button found on the back near all the ports for about 30 seconds, then allow 2-3 minutes for your router to reboot and reset itself.

→ I can get the wireless connected but there is no internet connection.

Your best bet is to check that the cables are all connected securely and that there’s no damage or issues with the cables hooking everything together. If that does not fix the problem, you’ll need to contact your internet service provider to see if there is any issue they can see on their end.

→ My WiFi password is not working.

If the default wireless password printed on the bottom sticker of your router is not working to access the WiFi, the easiest way to fix this would be to do a factory reset on your router. You can easily do this by pressing and holding the reset button on the back of the device for 30 seconds and then allowing 2-3 minutes for your router to reboot. After the wireless lights come back on, you can then try again with the default WiFi password.

How to Reset Arris TM1602

Performing a factory reset is a vital troubleshooting step that can resolve a large number of common networking problems. It’s important to have this in your back pocket as it can prevent having to call your internet provider or have them send out a technician. It takes just a few minutes, but can mean the difference between you needing to miss work for a technician call versus taking a few minutes to hit the reset button on your own.

  1. Plug in your TM1602 and wait for it to power on completely (about 3-5 minutes)
  2. Locate the reset button on the back of your Arris TM1602 where the other ports are
  3. Press and hold down your reset button with a paperclip for 30 seconds
  4. Wait 3-5 minutes for your TM1602 to reboot and reset

Once your device has finished rebooting, it will be set to factory default settings and ready to go!

Arris TM1602 Login

In order to gain access to the settings of your Arris TM1602 cable modem, you will need the IP address of your device (check the FAQ at the bottom of the page for instructions on how to find your modem’s IP address), and the username and password to login to the settings panel for your device. Most of the time, the username and password can be found on the bottom sticker of your modem, but if you don’t see it there, you can follow the instructions below to access your modem’s settings with the default username and password. Before you begin, make sure you are connected directly to your Arris TM1602 modem with an Ethernet cable.

Arris TM1602 Login Instructions

  • Open your web browser (Chrome, Firefox or Safari work best)
  • Type 192.168.0.1 (or your modem’s IP address, if it’s been changed from the default) in the web address / URL bar of your internet browser. It should pull up a page with ARRIS branding on it.
  • You should see 2 text fields where you can enter a username and a password.
  • Check the bottom of your router. There you will find your login credentials. If not then have a look at the manual of your router (PDF linked at the top of this page).
  • Enter the username & password, hit “Enter” and now you should see the control panel of your router.

username: admin

password: password

Once you’ve entered the username and password above, hit login or submit to enter the settings panel!

How to Port Forward Your Arris TM1602

Port forwarding can be a useful tool for gamers, remote workers, or anyone who needs to access a specific application or device on their home network from the internet. If you’re using an Arris TM1602 modem and need to set up port forwarding, follow these steps:

  1. Open your preferred web browser and enter the IP address of your Arris TM1602 modem in the address bar. The default IP address for Arris modems is usually 192.168.0.1, but it may vary depending on your specific model. If you’re not sure what the IP address is, you can usually find it on the bottom of the modem or in the documentation that came with it.
  2. Once you’ve entered the IP address, you should see the Arris modem login page. Enter the username and password for your modem. If you haven’t changed the default login credentials, the username is usually “admin” and the password is “password” (without the quotes).
  3. Once you’re logged in, navigate to the “Port Forwarding” section of your modem’s settings. This may be located under “Firewall” or “Advanced Settings,” depending on your specific modem.
  4. In the port forwarding section, you should see an option to create a new port forwarding rule. Click on this option.
  5. You’ll need to enter some information to create the port forwarding rule. This includes the name of the rule, the internal IP address of the device you want to forward ports to, the protocol (TCP or UDP), the external and internal port numbers, and whether or not to enable the rule.
  6. Once you’ve entered all the necessary information, click “Apply” or “Save” to create the port forwarding rule.
  7. Test your port forwarding setup by accessing the device or application from the internet. You should now be able to access the device or application on the specified port number.

It’s important to note that port forwarding can potentially expose your home network to security risks, so it’s important to be cautious and only forward ports that are necessary. Additionally, some internet service providers may block certain port numbers or restrict port forwarding altogether, so be sure to check with your ISP before setting up port forwarding on your modem.

Arris TM1602A FAQ

How to Find Your IP Address

This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.

  1. Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
  2. In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
  3. When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
  4. Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

What is the difference between Arris TM1602A and Arris TM1602G?

The Arris TM1602A and TM1602G are very similar models and include basically the same features, across the board. However, while these two models are very similar, they are defined by a couple key differences. The TM1602G includes a battery backup option, allowing you to stay connected to voice services in the event of a power outage.

Additionally, the “-G” version of this model is not currently offered for retail sale, meaning that it can only be obtained from an internet service provider and those models will generally be flashed with rental firmware. If you’re looking to remove your modem rental fee from your service bill, getting a device with rental firmware will not help achieve that goal.

Our staff currently view the TM1602A as one of the best, most reliable options for Optimum. It’s easy to activate and set up, and is a workhorse of a modem that provides consistent service.

Does the Arris TM1602 have wifi?

No, this model is just a cable modem with no WiFi router built into it. If you need WiFi, we highly recommend grabbing this model and then picking up a separate WiFi router to go alongside it.

Why not just get a modem router combo device?

We’re glad you asked! Modem router combos are certainly a convenient option for many people, however they are more prone to weak signal when compared to a modem and separate router. We see more signal strength problems since the built in router may be dealing with interference from the hardware of the modem. Or, possibly the built-in router is just not quite as powerful of a device as most routers out there. Either way, we highly recommend doing a separate router.

Is the Arris TM1602 a modem or router?

The Arris TM1602 is just a cable modem. This model does not have built-in WiFi, so if you need that for your network, you will need to pick up a separate WiFi router.

NOTE:!!!! This is not the manual for the Arris TM1602A. It is or the TM1602G. They are different products. There does not appear to be any user interface, or battery compartment on the TM1602A.

    1. ModemGuides says:

      Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your comment about the Arris TM1602 product manual. This manual is actually for both the TM1602A and TM1602G. Arris does not make separate manuals for the A/G versions of their products. The only variation between the two is the added backup battery capability in the TM1602G. It would be incorrect to say that the TM1602A does not have a user interface. We know this model very well, as we have been carrying it in our store and providing support for it for several years now. Sorry to hear that there was any confusion caused by our product manual page. Please feel free to reach out to our technical support team if you’ve purchased this from us and are needing assistance with getting it set up – We are always happy to provide assistance for our customers!

      Thank you so much!

    2. ModemGuides says:

      Hi Daniel,

Arris does not make a separate manual for the different variations of their TM1602 product line. You are correct that the TM1602A does not have a battery backup as that is only found in the “-G” variations of Arris modems. If you read the manual PDF, you’ll see the different variations mentioned, including both the “-A” and the “-G” and their corresponding specs and install instructions.

      Hope that helps!

  3. William Pitkanen says:

I have a 1602A modem that will not power up. I was looking for a schematic to trouble shoot the card . In opening the 1602A up I found a TM3402 CCA installed with only 2 Tel ports I was confused. Is there any way I can get more info. The CCA has no visible damage the power light does not come on . I change the power cable with a good cable.
