How to Find Your IP Address
Why Knowing Your IP Address is Important
We all know how annoying it can be to have to call your internet service provider to get your internet working properly again. Thankfully, most issues that would require a call to your provider’s customer service are actually things you can fix yourself within less than 20 minutes without leaving your couch or waiting on hold.
In addition to basic techy fixes to common issues, you need to know this IP address in order to get into your settings panel of your device which is where all the fun settings are located such as: WiFi, Security, Parental Controls, Guest Networks, Dual-Band/Band Selection, and a bunch more that you’ll definitely need to access at some point.
Let’s Get Into It
This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel. If you have a Mac computer, your pages might look a little different, but you should be able to follow the same instructions. Because this method is so easy, our technicians do not currently recommend downloading any software to find out your IP address as other instruction resources recommend.
- Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
- In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
- When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
- Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router settings panel!
