Previous comments were helpful to me, so I’m adding my quick start experience to help someone else. We live in the Midwest and have AT&T DSL high speed Internet service & a Netgear wireless router. My Toshiba Satellite has Windows Vista. Our Hewlett Packard desktop has Windows 98. We also access the Internet on our Playstation 3 to view Netflix instant movies. Our 2-yr-old Motorola 2210 modem had been overheating for 5 months. Even though we stood it on its side for cooling, we had to reset the Motorola several times daily. I purchased this Actiontec DSL modem and installed it myself using the quick start guide. This modem does not have a power switch, so the step to turn the switch to “on” was skipped. Also, my Actiontec modem has two phone ports, not one port as stated in the startup guide. One is labeled “Line,” & the other is labeled “Phone.” When the phone line running from our phone jack was plugged into the “Phone” port, my download speed was hampered. I had to plug the phone line into the “Line” port to optimize my internet speed. The modem was not automatically recognized even when I bypassed the router & plugged the Ethernet cable directly into my PC. I had to use the Alternate Installation Guide, configuring this modem at […] and setting my connection to PPPoE. Now all Internet access is working as expected from my Toshiba Satellite, our HP desktop & our PS3 via the Netgear wireless router & this Actiontec modem.

I read online how this modem works with AT&T DSL. It works and is lightweight but due to AT&T DSL abysmal service I had to return it and cancel the service for a client.Make sure that if you use it for AT&T DSL get a technician to take a look at it to set it up because over the phone they are really no help as they usually read off a script as this device is unsupported. In addition, this modem is not for the faint of heart, use the modem provided by AT&T to have your headaches reduced…somewhat 😀

Have been using the Actiontec DSL modem for a month and have had no problems with it. Installation was easy except for one ID10T problem. Obviously this was not Actiontec’s falult.

This modem works fine with ATT/Bellsouth DSL. I’m not sure how easy the setup will be for nontechnical users, I skipped the instructions and entered the settings manually. It took a while at first for it to establish a connection but I think that was a problem on Bellsouth’s end during initial setup of my account. It works great now and I have only had to power cycle it to get the internet connection working once in the past 3 months. I’d rather never have to do that but its not bad compared to my cable service with Comcast and the motorola cable modem that I had previously.

This product was ordered on the advice of Verizon against my better judgement. Verizon tech support is the pits. After 40 plus years in IT you’d think I had better sense than to listen to someone who misses the key words in IT. Product was refused and returned.

Worked right out of the box, very easy installation to an already existing dsl line, no problems since installation. Very happy.

I bought the Qwest-branded version of this modem as part of a DSL package. Used it continuously for over a year and a half. Unfortunately Qwest’s infrastructure in our neighborhood is getting old and our house is quite far from the central office so the signal started getting too weak. Even our voice service was sub standard for a while. We eventually switched service providers but it wasn’t because of the modem. the Actiontec GT701 kept on working through thick and thin.Used it with a wireless router connected. There are lots of configuration options so it can be a little intimidating if you’re not familiar with networking.

The modem works great however you must be on the particular network for it to function. There are a couple of work-arounds, but if you’re not in Denver this is not the modem you want.

this is a good modem for dsl internet, however it was extremely troublesome because I had to talk to 5 att special agent customer service reps before one of them could figure out how to help me get an internet connection established from the modem. we had to go on the internet to go inside the modem to change and reconfigure all the different settings and utilities. it took 3&1/2 hours to finally get it connected to the internet. but now that it is connected I am extremely satisfied now that I finally have internet service at my own home. ALSO ,,, I RECIEVED MY MODEM 4 DAYS BEFORE MY SCHEDULED DELIVERY DATE!!! I RECIEVED PACKAGE 3 DAYS AFTER I ORDERED IT! IT SHIPPED THE VERY NEXT DAY 🙂

I got the GT701R in 2005. It has always done a good job for me. In 2013, I upgraded from 256kbs to 7Mbs. Info states it can deliver up to 24Mbs.Always check with your ISP to see if a modem you want is compatible. Customer support at USFamily.net helped me get my settings set-up in just a couple of minutes. It has a router but one network jack, so if you want to connect to more than one item (TV, computer, phone, fridge?!), you need to get a switch, but don’t need to spend extra for another router. It also has its own firewall.

I bought this recently as a spare in case my other GT701R modem dies. I will probably keep it despite a few disappointments since USB modems are hard to find, and I have had good usage out of my other modem. I was somewhat disappointed by this for a few reasons:First, it’s a much older version of the modem I currently have. Because of this it appears to have a few minor flaws that may have been fixed by the GT701R. Nonetheless, there may be workarounds for these. The second thing about this modem is that it’s a Qwest-branded modem, with Qwest firmware. Qwest was acquired by CenturyLink several years ago, so I hope this does not cause a problem. However, the Qwest firmware does provide a QoS feature that may be useful for certain traffic management scenarios. The one thing I required from this modem is a USB interface for the way I network my two computers – saves having to purchase an external router. And the external power switch is a plus – much easier than having to unplug and replug the AC adapter.

I had This unit for a month now it is very easy to setup. You just got to know your way around cause the CD is useless. the unit I receive is different from display unit, The quick setup little supplement paper give a good instruction.I still have problem with my laptop sometime it would temporary disconnect from the internet for 30 sec to min, I think it may be my laptop. no problem with the desktop so far.

I’m paying for 1.5 M service from Centurytel. With my previous modem, the best I would get is 800-900 K. With my new Actiontec I’m getting over 1.4 M!! Setup was quick and easy too.

This is the only modem I would recommend & found that Amazon is by far the best place to purchase same.

I bought this to replace a Cisco 678 modem, hoping it would provide a faster connection. Now that it is set up, I have found that my upload speed is about 20 percent faster, but my download speed is not much better than before. And I am wondering if my improved upload speed has more to do with a change I made to my phone line configuration than to the modem itself. (It seems that not running my phone line through a surge protection circuit improves performance.)My biggest gripe about this modem is that the CD set-up wizard was useless to me. In fact, it just wasted my time. I had to log in to the manual configuration control panel to set this modem up, and I don’t think the CD goes into details about how to do this. The CD mentions an on/off switch, but there is no such switch on my model. Worse, the CD says that the phone line is supposed to be plugged into the “phone” jack on the modem. That may be true for some models, but on my model, I could only get it to work by plugging the phone cable into the “line” jack on the modem. The “line” jack is not even mentioned on the CD. Nor is it mentioned in the printed installation guide. When I called tech support to explain the problem I was having getting the modem to work, the tech person did not mention the possibility that I needed to plug my phone line into the “line” jack. Later, when I called again and explained that I was still having trouble setting up the modem, the line went dead in the middle of the call, and the technician (in India I think) never called me back.Oh, and one more little thing about this modem: It has a feature that logs Web activity, including Web sites visited. That may be just what you need to spy on your kids or your employees, but if you are uncomfortable with the possibility of others tracking YOUR Web activities, this may not be the modem for you. This feature apparently can be turned off if you have a little computer savvy, but I understand it will turn itself back on whenever the power is cycled off or the modem is rebooted. For me, getting this modem to work was an hours-long headache. Much of the problem however probably had to do with me not getting the correct login and setup information from my ISP. Be sure you get the correct VPI# and VCI# from your ISP before attempting to manually configure the modem.

Had to purchase this new DSL modem because I was told by a very nice company rep that my old one too old. Good investment. I was told that a new would cost at least $99, but I should check with Fry’s or Best Buy. So I decided that they had modems check with Amazon because I just know they them. Yep! It’s working!

I was in need of DSL modem to go with a Linksys WRT54GL router I had just purchased to replace an old 2-Wire wireless router/DSL modem combo. I called my carrier, Centurytel, to see about buying a modem and was astonished to learn that they no longer sell the modems, they lease them to the tune of three dollars a month. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what a rip-off that is, so I thanked the agent for his time and hung up the phone.I read an Amazon review of the Actiontec modem from another Centurytel user who described how well it worked, so I decided to take the plunge and order one.I decided to try the modem by itself first without the Linksys in case there were problems. They would be easier to isolate this way. I ran the guided setup program and had the modem working in no time flat. The guided setup was a little confusing at one point with two choices for Centurytel in the menu. There was no explanation for what the difference between the two was. After some testing I found that option 1 connected and option 2 did not, so the choice then became clear. After testing the modem by itself, I reset it to factory defaults to prepare it for connection to the Linksys. (I probably didn’t need to reset, but I wanted to start fresh.) I changed the VC settings to 8/35 to match Centurytel’s requirements and set the modem up for bridging. I connected it to the Linksys and configured the Linksys for the internet connection. I was able to establish a connection on the first try.The Actiontec/Linksys combination has been working for several days now without the slightest hitch. Performance is very good, as close to the advertised speed of my DSL connection as one could expect. There’s really only one minor complaint I have with the Actiontec. I would have liked to have seen a quick start guide included for users who are going to be using the modem to connect to a router in bridged mode. I have to believe this is the configuration that is used by many, if not most, users. The guided setup CD is not needed for the bridged configuration. In fact, the guided setup makes no mention of the possibility. A card with a couple of steps for setting up bridged mode would have been very helpful. If I hadn’t done some internet research on what was required before the modem arrived, I would have been at a loss for what to do.That being said, I am very pleased with the Actiontec and highly recommend it. It sure beats forking three dollars extra a month over to Centurytel!

When I signed up for DSL, my vendor (AT&T) shipped me a free DSL modem. While the provided modem worked most of the time with a computer, it did not reliably run with a router attached. I reconfigured it for a bridged mode and that seemed to improve. However it was still slow, slow to connect as it did not seem to keep connected. The documentation was very dated, with nothing updated on the Internet. The support for that modem really didn’t exist from the vendor either. However when I purchased the Actiontec modem after reading the reviews, I was hopeful that it would solve my DSL reliability concerns. When it arrived, I simply followed the instructions which really consisted of plugging it up and turning it on. It self sensed my AT&T vendor by configuring the DSL network settings and began to work. I did nothing. It just worked and is still working. Much faster than the old modem too. I have to say that this new modem looks a bit cheap and flimsy, but it is not and it works beautifully.

I don’t write many reviews, but this product deserves one.I have AT&T DSL in Northern California. My 2Wire DSL Modem and WiFi burned out after 2 years. I searched everywhere for a Wi-Fi 802.11n AP and DSL Modem combination unit. The ones I found are all out of stock (2 months!) So I bought this unit yesterday morning on Amazon. I paid for overnight. It arrived at 10:00AM this morning. The DSL was working by 10:15AM.All I needed to do was know my username and password. Then I checked the box for PPoE during install (I have a Mac – the instructions were excellent.) It took almost 5 minutes the first time for the DSLAM to accept my new CPE, but it worked first time. Now my DSL is FASTER than before. This unit worked perfectly out of the box with less than 60 seconds of configuration.HINT: If you have a WiFI AP, hook it up to the Ethernet cable BEFORE you configure the DSL Modem and you will be Wi-Fi enabled the minute the DSL connects.

I chose this modem after moving and thus switching from cable to dsl internet service. I basically went with this modem because of the price and Amazon’s reviews.I have it for less than a week now and its working fine. No issues yet. The set up wasn’t very smooth though since ISP’s (AT&T, in my case) default setings did not match the one of the modems. The automatic setting could not detect my provider and ATT was not in the list. I could have monkeyed around and figured out myself through the manual mode but after a couple of attempts I just called the tech support at Actiontec. The guy was very helpful and we figured it out within matter of minutes.
