Not a reflection on the actual device, but a warning. This is an ADSL modem and consequently it doesn’t work on Qwest/CenturyLinkVDSL. If you currently have an Actiontec CS1000A from CenturyLink and are looking for faster wireless performance, this is not it.
W Family –
I bought this to replace an aging Actiontec GT701D modem, since this newer GT784WN is the current modem my ISP (TDS) provides for my 5Mbps DSL line. I’m in the boonies so I’m lucky to get 5Mbps downloads; my speed went down recently so I hoped the newer modem might give me a boost. It did maybe a little, so I’m keeping it. Note: the GT784WN is spec’d to support ADSL2+ with speeds up to 24 Mbps downstream, if you can get that speed. ALSO, this modem/router is more up-to-date technology, hence more supportable by your ISP.BUT ONE THING: the DEFAULT GT784WN settings as delivered exposed my home LAN to intrusion/hacking due to inadequate firewall settings. SO… I recommend using the GT784WN’s web page access menu to lock things up better. See pictures 1 & 2 and use the Advanced Setup button, then, under Security, click on Firewall. There, click on ENABLE Stealth Mode, AND choose Firewall Security Level MEDIUM or HIGH (not low or Nat only), and finally don’t forget to click SAVE at the bottom of the page. Then see pictures 3 & 4 and again under Security, click on UPnP. There, set the UPnP state to DISABLE and click SAVE. (I periodically go back and LOOK at these same settings to make sure they stick and haven’t been defaulted by a modem reset, etc.)These more secure settings should give you much better protection than the DEFAULTS as shipped. For more info, use a website (like Gibson Research Corp) where you can query your own home LAN and see if it’s secure, OR NOT.NOTE: making your modem more secure could “break” some apps on your LAN, if so, you can always go back to the GT784WN defaults: Stealth Disabled, NAT Only Firewall Security Level, and UPnP Enabled… but I wouldn’t. You can be secure AND fine tune the protection to allow specific apps, but you need to research how to do that safely.And ALWAYS secure your LAN and WiFi with encryption and strong passwords (not the defaults)! Be forewarned.

I would give zero stars if i could… I bought this item to save $10 per month from renting a modem from windstream. I spent 2 hours of trying to set up/talk to tech support about this item just to find out that it will not support internet speeds higher than 24 Mbps. This is false advertising as it it says on the box and online that is capable of handling 300 Mbps. Shame on them for false advertisement and shame on winstream for offering very few options for third party modems. So i will sit here and wait another 3 to 5 buisness days without internet that i am paying for. This is absolutely ridiculous.
