I bought the modem to use with CenturyLink in the Denver Metro Area. The sales rep said the modem would work, but I wouldn’t be able to take full advantage of CenturyLink’s fastest speeds. That was fine by me because I was mostly interested in their entry-level speeds.Anyways, after the CenturyLink technician activated my phone jacks for DSL I wasn’t able to connect. After speaking with CenturyLink’s 800-number Tech Support they told me this modem would not work at all with CenturyLink in the Denver Metro Area. I needed a VDSL modem, not ADSL.I gave the product 5-stars because my problem is not the modem’s fault, but I felt it was necessary to post this information/warning in case you are considering this product for CenturyLink in Denver, Colorado.

We got this because AT&T told us the higher speed of this modem would boost our iPhone signal strength at home in conjunction with an AT&T microcell. About 50% of our calls at home are dropped. This modem has not helped. My husband has spent more than 30 hours on the phone between AT&T, Qwest, and Actiontec (the maker of the Qwest modem). It has finally been revealed that Actiontec needs to do a firmware update for the modem to be able to connect to the microcell. We have been waiting for months for that upgrade, and it still hasn’t happened. As a result, we still drop about 50% of our calls at home, even though we have a microcell that AT&T gave us. I use google phone at the computer to make calls. All this hardware is useless if each entity doesn’t do its part, and Actiontec is useless. These companies don’t know their own products very well, let alone the supposedly “compatible” hardware they recommend. A real mess. The wifi capability of the modem is no better than the lower speed modem we had before.

Having been an early adopter of DSL a decade ago, I was not too dismayed when the Cisco 675 modem that came with my Qwest (at the time, USWest) service sputtered and eventually failed. I bought this modem–the Actiontec m1000, branded for Qwest and sold as their “Broadband Starter Kit”–as a likely-sounding replacement. The swap was not without incident, which required a visit from a helpful Qwest technician (after a couple of hours on the phone with tech support), but that wasn’t the modem’s fault: Turns out Qwest had made upgrades since I had originally subscribed, and the new modem was never going to work until they upgraded my account accordingly. They did so, and since then the modem has worked flawlessly. I’d recommend it, though my sole DSL experience is with USWest/Qwest, so I have no way of knowing how it would handle other providers.
Soren Stoutner –
What you see is exactly what you get. It isn’t the best DSL modem, but it is compatible with Qwest’s network out of the box.
DEL N ENGELHARD –
This modem worked just fine but all the cables were not included as the ad stated. The network cable was missing.
Steven M. Stone –
It was a simple pull out the old, put in the new with this modem. Yes, you must know your password, but fifteen minutes with tech support will get your password and the rest is easy. After a month the modem has had no operational glitches, even after power outages and DSL line outages (I live in a rural area.)
Ayla Khan –
This modem is fast and easy to set up, and should work well for most home users. We’ve been using it for 7 months without any problems. For more sophisticated users, having only one ethernet port is limiting and there are very few configuration options.
Cameron D. McIntosh –
I renewed my DSL subscription after a lapse and was surprised when the installation technician said the M1000 was no longer able to be used.It appears that the DSL communications standard in our area has changed from “ADSL2+” to “VDSL2.” I found very little additional detail but can say that:(1) The M1000 DSL light flashes continuously when plugged in, whereas the replacement modem (Actiontec C1000A) connects properly.(2) The firmware upgrade program reported that my M1000 was already the latest FW version. It appears that, in our area, Century Link has adopted a new DSL protocol, for which the M1000 is no longer suited.Cam McIntosh
Nicole Fuller –
This was one of the best deals I have found on Amazon. I didn’t want to pay for a modem each month through the cable company, and buying one brand new just isn’t realistic. This is a great product at an excellent price!!
A. Kurian –
Did not realize that a filter was not needed for the modem itself and that the phone line could be connected to the modem. Uncertainty was resolved by Qwest customer service. Otherwise working well so far.
rdale –
I ordered this because my modem wasn’t working properly. I received this one is just a few days. This was not packed in its original packaging, but everything was there. I plugged it in and it has worked perfectly ever since.
Agradut –
The Modem really was a plug and play type modem. However, I have done this before so it might seem easy to me. I downloaded the instructions from my service provider, century link and followed step by step to activate the modem. Took me a total of 20 mins to set it up.
Lainy Bagwell –
The modem I ordered works great and was in very good condition when it arrived.Item arrived before the date expected. Very happy with this product!
Travis –
Works great. It was easy to set up and my DSL works like I expect. I would buy this again. Very reasonable price.
J. Elfering –
This was a replacement to my old modem that stopped functioning. It’s worked well. We have to typical needs for restart, as with any modem, but I wish I had read more carefully to know the wireless feature was not included.
Kathy Tormaschy –
The product was fine and everything but just wouldn’t work with the new account set up at Quest. Even had a tech come look at it and everything. Ended up getting a new one.
Computeguydude –
Works good for Centurylink DSL, it is both a modem and a router. However, I wished it had more ethernet ports, but I can’t complain at this price point.
buyer –
my order has arived as described and in a good condition, i don’t know anything about its technical part but it looked goodthank you.
Anonymous –
It works some of the time. Have to reset it now and then .They don`t make it anymore so bought a refurbished model. Should have went with Time Warner.
John Riedl –
I have owned this modem since 2009, and it is finally starting to be inconsistent with connections. I forgive Actiontec for that, since most networking hardware seems to fail even faster than that these days. However, when I looked for a new modem to replace it with I looked at newer versions of the Actiontec. They looked as good as any in the category of ADSL2 modems except for a few reviews that mentioned that they no longer support DHCP reservations! So I upgraded the firmware on my M1000 to see if that would solve my connection problems. Incredibly, they removed the DHCP reservation feature from my old modem, too! What the heck, Actiontec? This has been an important feature for LAN management for decades. Why are you taking away features in your upgrades?!
ZA –
Make sure from your ISP before you buy a ADSL modem if your connection is ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+ (Older technology) or VDSL/VDSL2 (New technology). This is dependent on the connection they ran to your house and and not city / ISP.ADSL and VDSL are NOT compatible with each other.I have tried out Zyxel Q1000Z and Actiontec C1000A, and prefer BY FAR the Zyxel Q1000Z.Please mark this as helpful so that it inform other people of not making the same mistake I made. Thank you!
cheneybui –
thanks seller . I try item some not work. I fine the trouble shooting and some friend help. it works ok so far
J. Meginnes –
Not quite what I was looking for or needed. Turned out it was not a wireless modem, which is what I required.
mcsa –
I requested that this parts be shipped right away as it was desperately needed the next day….and it did although by almost the end of the day. that was ok.
cjp –
THE M1000 AND THE W1000 ADAPTER WENT TOGETHER AS IT SHOULD. VERY PLEASED WITH THE PERSON WHO HELPED MAKE THE PURCHASE OF BOTH OF THESE.
J. Nutter –
The hardware seemed to be fine, just was not the right match for my internet service provider. It seemed to be designed for century link
Jonathan Brusnahan –
This modem works well, it was kind of slow to set up but I have had no problem with it once it is running. No random shut downs or anything like that. Also, it shipped quickly and arrived quickly. All in all I am satisfied with the purchase.
J. Mccollum –
I got the router on schedule and it has worked very well for me. A good deal at a fair price and a great product.
Rich Koivisto –
If you need a modem that you don’t have to reboot every day, this one is a fair choice.
T. R. Boomer –
Not much to report, and that is a good thing. It just works reliably and is trouble free. No fussing around trying to figure anything out. I just set it up with my account and password and bang I was on the internet. No complaints.
Kevin Brace –
Good product. It worked just fine.
WWE –
It is your basic connection to CenturyLink at a price a fraction of what CenturyLink charges. Reliable, never needs a reset.
Sharon –
Good experience!

chevvy1957 –
We could not get it to work. The century tech person said it wil not work so I sent it back.
john a burg –
Works very well and seems a little faster than my leased modem.
Jeremy K –
It is OK for a DSL modem. The wireless add on really isn’t good (see separate review). Also, this only has one Ethernet port on the back, so you better be ready to buy a multiport router or switch if you do anything on a real network. Finally, a minor issue, it looks like there was more investment in the glowing qwest logo on the front, than any other feature of the device. Next time, I hope qwest spares me the glowing logo and gives me an extra Ethernet port! Buyer beware.
Mr. Nek –
This modem worked great when I lived in an area where DSL was the only available internet. I purchased it for use with CenturyLink DSL. The product itself is labeled as a Qwest modem as this was the old name of the company, but it does work with CenturyLink as of the last time I used it in November 2014.
Fourier Transform –
Bought this from Qwest in 2007. Solid performance till date. Currently has a 12 mbps connection and I regularly get 10-11 mbps down on this. Added the wireless module on-to it in 2010 (highly recommended – only $20 from Qwest). Run a host of devices (3 computers, 1 Roku Netflix streaming, 1 iPhone, 1 wireless ip camera, 1 Vonage VOIP) nonstop on this. Now I am upgrading to 20 mbps and Qwest told me that this modem is capable of handling that speed as well.
Sunil –
Doesn’t work with my AT&T DSL wired high speed internet. On call with customer case for 1 hour but no luck!!
Momof2 –
This modem works great for Centurylink in Heppner, OR. I called Centurylink to get the set-up specifications which I needed to add, then it was up and going.
J. Cross –
thanks
Shelli A. Carpenter –
It works great and the price was very reasonable!
Steffan –
Make sure to get the wireless module that isn’t included with this.
OBX Pirate –
You can not plug this in, hook it up and get Centurylink internet. It needs to be specially programmed. Centurylink ended up telling me I should return this and buy one from them.
noelgoo –
only bought this to replace the one I had before and it’s cheap as hell. If I can ANY other ISP or better internet I would not get this.
William C. Faulk Jr –
This is a solid basic VDSL2 modem but it could have been more if the configuration menus didn’t limit the options. The only reason I really needed to replace this with a $500.00 alternative is the inability to configure the firewall to allow only traffic on certain ports for specific IP addresses. I have servers at home and I only want to allow incoming traffic from my office or specific customers and I couldn’t do that with the Q1000. (Some servers don’t have the ability to implement software firewalls)With the Q1000 You can set up port forwarding and allow incoming traffic on specific ports including those you add yourself but you can’t limit access to specific IP addresses. I know the Q1000 can do this; it sets up the firewall to limit incoming traffic on DNS protocols specifically to Qwest’s DNS servers. It appears to simply be a case of the configuration menus not allowing access to configure that functionality. The port forwarding itself if fairly clunky for anyone simply wishing to open up a specific port to a specific local server but it does work. Ranges of ports didn’t work for me either; I had to create a separate custom rule for each port. Setting up forwarding for a new application automatically sets up the firewall since you don’t have the ability to just add specific ports to the firewall with the configuration menus provided.

was unable to used the product a was not working for me at all.

Product worked as expected

Does not work for century link

The M1000 is fine in most cases. But there’s a bug in the firmware (all versions) that blocks port 80 from being passed through when this is configured for use with a /24 set of static addresses. Also, its MTU setting cannot be changed and will frequently fragment packets in PPPoE mode which can cause trouble (timeouts) on incoming connections if you’re hosting an Exchange Server. Most of Qwest’s new DSL circuits are configured as PPPoE now, but the DSLAMs support both, so set this to PPPoA and it will still train up and give you a nice 1500 MTU.In summary, if you’re a /24 static IP customer who is hosting Exchange, use PPPoA. If you’re hosting a web site, though, you’ll have to go with another modem, like the Actiontec GT701 which will pass port 80.
sparkyguy –
This modem worked fine. One thing is that the Internet light stayed red even when my computer indicated that I was connected to the internet and I was able to surf the internet, still the light on the modem stayed red, while the other 3 lights were green, so I didn’t understand what was going on there, still it worked fine for me.
William R. –
This replaces a 10 year old same model that I use for CentryLink. I tried to use a Netgear which was a disappointment and was happy to find this modem.
B. Bates –
Best modem for Qwest DSL. Small, and light weight. Easy to install and works fast.
rm –
Wouldn’t work with my Windstream DSL
JULIE SERRANT –
don’t work at all
Trish –
I should have paid more attention to the reviews before I purchased. Sold me a product that phone company had been obsolete for some time and could t be used
KIRK E. –
WHAT I EXPECTED. GOT IT QUICKLY
Flight sim’r –
Centurylink no longer supports this modem. They just disabled them a couple of months ago and didn’t bother to tell me. Don’t buy this for Centurylink because it will NOT work.
Clay B. –
This unit is not supported by Centurylink. It is old and obsolete. Had to return it. Return was very easy.
Faye L. Bowring –
This order is to replace my original 3 year-old Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem which was dropping my connection to the Internet several times per use and after reading other modem problem reviews, I decided it was time for a new modem. Since installing the new modem (I had no problem with installation using the included CD and my ISP Qwest website for their updating the application) I have had no further problems with disconnects or slow surfing! According to other reviewers if you want home networking, you have to order the optional $20.00 wireless connection.
Laptop Lizard –
The first one bricked. The second one refuses to enable port forwarding. The interface is clunky and doesn’t render properly in some browsers. The log files aren’t very illuminating.
Mark –
I have been using this modem for over a year now, and it has worked flawlessly the whole time. (I use my Internet a LOT!). Qwest has upgraded the firmware for this modem a couple of times; so always check their site for the latest firmware. Easy to upgrade – and may well have resolved the previous negative reviewer’s issues.I also just purchased the wireless adapter & plugged it into the top – works beautifully!
CJ –
Works fine, just didn’t realize you need a separate adapter (another 20+ dollars) for this to be wireless.
Rollo Tomasi –
I switched to this modem when I needed to a modem that would support Apple’s Back to My Mac service, which this modem does indeed support. I’ve since switched to Qwest 12Mbps service since fiber optic was setup in my area and the modem works well at these speeds. I use my own network switches and wireless routers for 802.11n so I don’t need the extra wireless module that’s required to get this modem to serve wireless clients and it’s wireless add-on only supports 802.11g anyway.I don’t know if it’s Qwest’s DSL service or this modem, but I do need to reset the modem several times a week.On the whole, I recommend this modem. I’ve been using it a year now. It works as advertised. I’ll probably get a second one as a backup.
J. Cook –
I bought this modem to replace an Action Tec wireless modem that just wouldn’t stay connected to the Qwest network (it was a modem from qwest). This modem has dropped my connection very little in the last two months. The ease of setup was acceptable. I am currently running it to my linksys wireless router and everything is working smoothly. I can’t comment on the modem speed as I pay only for 1.5 MB DSL so any modem could handle my speed. Overall the modem is good. I have no negatives to report at this time, but check back in a year.****Update 3/31/2014 ********I am still using this modem and it never randomly drops my internet connection like my Action Tec used to. I don’t have the wireless adapter for this modem so in order to get wireless you need to hook in a wireless access point or a wireless router. If you use a wireless router like me, look to see if you can do WAN authentication (ex. PPP PPoE) with the wireless router. If you can then you should put this modem in invisible bridged mode (see advanced configuration menu) so your modem is passed by and all routing and authentication to your ISP is done with your wireless router. If you just hook in your wireless router without bridging the modem your network will perform NAT twice which is a waaste of network time. This will cut down on internet latency and if you are a gamer you will appreciate that. Just remember that once this modem is in invisible bridge mode you cannot log into it again until you reset to factory defaults.
Robert V. Martinez –
Recv’d this modem in a timely fashion and in good condition. Did not come with an installation CD, I had to call qwest but they took care of the installation on my computer. Other than that it is a sharp looking, reliable and good priced modem.

1) Setting up DSL service using the quick connect disc (not a very quick connect). Wish that DSL setup was quick, as I’m the type of person that need the internet like NOW! Something like that way that it is done through most cable internet providers, which involves the Mac Address of the modem. Copying down user ID info, wish I had done that the first time more details about later.2) Surfing the Web everything seems to be working fine. Dropped the internet after about 12 hours use, did not think much of it. After rebooting modem everything seems to work fine, so it seemed that is all it needed. After a mouth it is dropping the Internet every 1-12 hours and rebooting its self (something tells me it was always doing this). Called Qwest’s Tech Support turns out that a setting in the modem need to be changed. This could be the reason the first one I had was losing the internet. With the setting changed to what Qwest uses, no more dropping of the Web.3) Qwest uses tips:a) First login to the modems setup page by typing in the modems IP address (tip IP address should be 192.168.0.1).b) Left click on Quick Setup tabc) Left click on Advance IP Configurationd) Select PPPoAe) Left click Apply4) Pros:a) Setup was pretty easy.b) Modem setup Interface is very simple to understand.c) ADSL 2/2+ Modem so works with major DSL providers.d) Small footprint when standing up.5) Cons:a) PPPoA not default even though banded for Qwest.b) Some settings not auto set by carrier.c) Cannot disable NAT Firewall without losing internet (reason for the 3 star rating).d) Had to call Qwest Tech Support.6) Overall this is a good modem and with the right setting you will not have dropping of the internet on the modems side. Only wish that the NAT Firewall could be disabled without losing the internet.

I ordered a used one and it didn’t work at all, so I don’t know what the product is actually like when it works.Had no problems returning it and got my money refunded so had no problems there
J. J. Techead –
I needed a QWEST (Century Link) approved modem to test my DSL line.Works just as well (if not better) than my older DLink modem, and runs cooler.Modem is easy to configure for “bridge mode” operation.Am curruntly running 7Mbs/890k download/upload speed.
Voracious Reader, Avid Listener –
I began using this modem just this week and came to Amazon to read about other users’ experiences with it. Most of theirs match mine – the modem is adequate for an Ethernet connection when it is working. However, like several others, I’ve had disconnection problems, despite my short period of use. Sometimes, the configuration utility balks or doesn’t recognize the account information, so I’ve done several resets and restarts. I don’t know whether this will be a continuing pattern. Since I use two Mac laptops, there is no configuration software for the computers themselves, only the Web setup page. The Actiontec M1000 does not include a wireless connection. Instead, the setup page sends you to an Actiontec site to buy a mediocre router module proprietary to the Actiontec M1000. I will be attempting to bridge to my much better router, an Apple Time Capsule. But, it is important to have a stable Ethernet connection first. Another possibility is using the Sharing preference pane in the Network preferences of Mac OS X to share the M1000’s Ethernet signal via Wi-Fi.The M1000 is much less expensive than Qwest/Centurylink’s favored DSL modem/router combination, the ZyXel PK5000Z. But, you get what you pay so little for – a very basic DSL modem.Addendum: Nov. 9, 2011I was not able to get the Actiontec M1000 to work with the Sharing preferences in OS X, Lion, to provide Wi-Fi. However, I do have a connection to the M1000 that provides Wi-Fi via my Time Capsule router. My previous description, ‘a very basic modem’ still applies. If you are looking for a device with wireless access included, it would be better to buy a different modem. Purchase of the W1000 module, $30.00 at Best Buy, would push the price paid for both up to the same as a modem with wireless capability included.
R. Morris –
I bought this modem because it was listed as an approved device for my Qwest (now CenturyLink) DSL service. I’ve been using it for almost four months (EDIT: now more than 2 years) with no problems at all.If you’ve ever configured one before, there won’t be too many surprises. The default IP address of the device is 192.168.0.1, so navigate to that in a Web browser after you plug it in; then the easiest option is probably to click the “Quick Setup” link on the side and configure as needed. (Most notably, you’ll need your username and password from the ISP.)However, I already have my own router with configuration I wanted to keep (port forwarding, etc.). In my case, I turned off the routing feature on this modem by putting it into “RF1483 bridge mode” (available in its configuration). Then, after configuring my own router with my PPPoE settings, this modem acts more like my old cable modem, and I need only worry about the configuration of my own router. However, if you don’t already have a router or don’t care to use your own, this modem works fine with its default configuration, though you get only one Ethernet port. There is space for a Wi-Fi add-on module (not included) on the top of the unit, but I haven’t used that–again, because I have my own, so I set it up to work with that instead. At least in bridge mode (and for the brief period I used it in its default state), I’ve had no problems with this modem and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to someone looking to buy one, assuming it’s compatible with your ISP. If you plan to have DSL for any significant period of time, it’s probably cheaper in the long run–especially if you buy a used one–than paying the rental fee your ISP will probably charge you if you don’t.
