Actiontec MI424WR Rev I Manual & Product Guides

How to Activate Actiontec MI424WR Rev I

Activating your Actiontec MI424WR Rev I is the first step you need to take after unboxing your new modem. It’s a fairly simple process, and we recommend setting aside about an hour of your time to ensure you’re able to complete the whole activation.

  1. Plug in your new modem the same as the one it’s replacing. Make sure power cable is plugged in and coaxial cable is screwed in on the back as well. It’s recommended to do this and then wait an hour before calling your provider, if possible, so that your modem can download whatever firmware is needed for the activation.
  2. Next, call your provider and let them know that you’re doing an activation with a self-install of your new modem. They’ll ask you for a few of the numbers on the bottom of the unit and then proceed to get your modem added to your account and service plan.
  3. The call will end after the representative verifies with you that you have an internet connection. You can test this for yourself simply by visiting a few websites.

Your modem is now activated!

How to Reset Actiontec MI424WR Rev I

Resetting your Actiontec MI424WR Rev I is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
  2. Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
  3. You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
  4. Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.

Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.

How to Find Your IP Address

This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.

  1. Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
  2. In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
  3. When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
  4. Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

Not the world’s best router by far, but if you’ve got Verizon FIOS Internet and don’t have a practical option of running a network cable from the ONT and have the need to set custom firewall rules, this is THE device. The newer “Quantum Gateway” may have a newer wireless setup but the lack of a programmable firewall means that this trusty (..if perhaps a wee bit clunky) Actiontec router is the tool for the job.Purchased as upgrade for an old Actiontec Revision “F” router which lacks wired gigabit ethernet and 802.11n wireless and because Verison won’t send this router anymore – they insist the Quantum Gateway is the only upgrade.

This is a very good product because I changed to Charter and this is a Verizon FiOS router modem that still does the trick. One has to remember this is not a DSL router.

    PUnk – August 27, 2015

Over the years, I have had several of these Routers. I am not impressed. It is just a way for Verizon to charge money. With in the pass two years I’ve had to replace this 3 times. First, one stopped working. The second one arrived DOA. This third one was intermitted. It would stop working for a day or a few hour and then start working again. No action would get it to come back. I guess it would just get tired. I finally have one that works. I am not impress with the coverage. All I want to do is beat this thing with a hammer.

It came in on time, in the same packaging as the one I had from Verizon. Plugged it in, got set up with Verizon, so far it works fine…I’ve had it for just over a month. At setup Verizon was able to connect to the box with no problems.

    Joe in TX – September 5, 2015

Works as it should and have had no issues. The only complaint I would have is that it did not come with an owner’s manual. That is probably only related to the specific vendor that it came from — I would think they normally come with owner’s manuals. It came with everything else though.

The title of the product says it is an MI424-WR Rev. I router however in my package I recieved a MI424-WR Rev. F router. This doesn’t work with my Verizon Fios internet. Returning it right away. No need for a mistake like that.

    Emerys – January 24, 2016

So far, I’m loving my Actiontec. The technician from Verizon came, install and set up the internet service the other day without any issue. I was able to access the configuration online and it is just fine. My router is pretty cool in temperature and does not make any apparent noise; not that it should, but I’m just saying. It was a good deal!

  31. Rated 4 out of 5

    JayO – January 25, 2016

This performs well for OEM. I bought this so I didn’t have to keep paying Verizon FiOS monthly. If you buy your own, it pays for itself within a year. I wish the performance was a bit better, but I pretty much just use this for its modem capabilities and have a separate router, which works great.

    PVN – February 22, 2016

Although the wireless speed is slow (which is expected of an older model), the wired connection is very fast and can output even 100 Mbps. It was easy to setup, and also easy to manage and go through its settings. Mine only came with one antenna, even though the product image shows two, but since I don’t connect to it wirelessly, it’s fine for my needs.

This (from MY seller) unit requires buyer to buy/supply 2 antennas with an RP-SMA connection typeand a 12v power supply brick.None of this is supplied. (AS PROPERLY STATED IN LISTING.)Note: If you have the older ver “C”, that older power supply will not work as the oldermodel used 5v.RMA went well, but shipping cost me $12 to return.

    Ricardo A. Seneris – April 28, 2016

It only worked for one day and one night. It is always risky buying used routers. Chances are they were bad to begin with such as intermittent moody behavior. Rather than troubleshoot them they just yank them out and replace them with a new one for an uninterrupted cable service. But, I believed it was claimed to had been tested by the seller.

  43. Rated 3 out of 5

    J.K. – May 7, 2016

Fair condition: Did not work, password failed 3 times even with reset. Price is great and free shipping, would consider future purchases. Pretty dinged up, coax input was loose and looked like it got some heavy use in it’s past. The sticker on router containing all the important information was very worn down, almost unreadable. Excellent return policy though.

    Nick – September 26, 2016

After cutting the cord for a couple of months, I decided to get fios internet so that I can get a kodi box. I was very reluctant to go back to “cable” but I saw a good deal for the internet that I couldn’t pass up. I also hate paying to “rent” equipment because I feel that the companies try to rip off the consumer. So ultimately, I decided to buy a wireless receiver. Hey for under $50 It was a good deal in my eyes.I received this router very quickly from when I placed the order. It was as described and works very well.I get a fast wifi signal 2 floors down and outside my house. My fios service is 50/50 upload and download speed. Sometimes I get close to that, sometimes I only get in the low 30’s, I reset the unit and the computer and it usually elevates the speed.Look, For the price of this unit (refurbished or used) it pays for itself in 6 months.I was skeptical at buying a used or refurbished router but after a few months with a great performance with no hiccups along the way, I can say that I highly recommend this seller and product.I will never “rent” equipment from the big cable companies again and neither should you.Let me know if you have any question, I will try my best to answer them. Enjoy!

Bought a used one for a new fios internet install to save from paying the monthly free. Was easy for the installer to install. Just make sure you get one with the antennas and power adapter.Editing my review. The wifi on this Sucks! No more than 10-20mbs. Hooked up my linksys router and got full speed. It’s great if you have an external router and turn off wifi on this router. Otherwise try to get the updated model.

Bad router, always let my internet disconnect for several times every day. Original I think is verizon’s Internet has problem and ask them to fix it. However, they sent me a new router and the problem fixed. So it is the router’s problem and I even don’t know so I missed the time to return. Don’t buy it.

    Shay – November 28, 2016

Mine paid for itself in less than a year. It works as well as the one Verizon Fios made me rent. It came well packaged, and ready to go. Worked as soon as I connected everything. My only complaint would be that mine had some superficial scratches on the outside when I got it. It’s not an art piece however, and I don’t give a crap how it looks as long as I can get internet while saving a bit of money.I called Verizon directly AFTER ordering this to get a box to return their router. DON’T WAIT! Make sure you get the return box as soon as possible if you’re thinking about going this route. Verizon dragged their feet for 1.5 months getting me the stupid box for me to return their router, all the while still charging me rent. I understand why they continued charging rent, however that was about $8 more they got from me because of it. Get the free box even if you’re still iffy on buying your own router.

3 major issues with (used) product.1. Antennae 2x – one was still attached when the product was unboxed. the other antennae was broken off, and place inside another bag with the power cord and ethernet cable2. Power cable not functioning. Tested on another known working model with the same model power cord. Didn’t work for either router. Tested known working power cable on purchased router, and it worked.3. When powered on (using the other power cord), the router couldn’t connect to the internet (got yellow/orange “internet” light).

Excellent price compared to buying it directly from Verizon. It will take approximately 10 months before breaking even compared to renting this on a monthly basis from Verizon. For a couple dollars more I also picked up a three-year warranty so after 10 months I’ll break even and still have 26 months of savings of $7.99 per month.

Bought a refurbished unit to replace a rental Verizon Fios Router Actiontec MI424WR Rev I (renting is such a rip-off). Setup was easy, just needed to call verizon to have them recognize it. Looks exactly the same as the unit provided by Verizon and so far, performance seems on-par. Note that this is NOT a dual-band router and only has the 2.4ghz channel. However, 2.4ghz has quite a range and is more than adequate for 50mbps internet speeds.

    Duncan Skiles – July 11, 2017

After reading the other reviews here, I thought this router would do fine with my 50/50 Fios plan. However after installation, I found out that the range is very weak. With my laptop in the same room, I could get 25 mbs tops; with my laptop on the other side of the apartment (where I typically work), it barely connected. It wasn’t just slow, it was unusable. So I had the Fios technicians install their new router, which had at least 40 mbs in every room. (It even went over 50 mbs at times). So I purchased that one from Verizon for $150.Based on my experience, if you want fast internet you need the latest gear.

We have one.It has been unreliable lately (the device is less than a year old),shutting down, especially on hot days.I think it is due to overheating. One can coax it to come back on, but it’s a very unpredictable remedy.Verizon really should use better equipment, because unreliable routers degrade their service.

Pros:1. Buying this modem/router is saving me $120/yr renting it from Verizon and enabling me to save $500/yr by dumping Comcast.2. Easy set up.3. Modem and router all in one.4. Works with my Netgear Router Extender.Cons:1. Much more limited range than a Comcast-compatible router, so you may have to buy a router extender.Bought this because the Verizon “chat guy” recommended it over the Gateway router. Bad advice. While this router can handle Verizon’s 50/50 download/upload, that is its limit. The Gateway router is good to 1 Gigabit, and is the right choice IMO.A word to the wise. Don’t chat. Talk to real people.

This came with a chord that did not belong to the router. It does not work. I missed work to set up my internet with a Verizon Tech and he drove here for me to have a non-working router because the seller provided me trivislon power chord that is not compatible.

The router is very useful and works well for me , but I use a network cable for the connection to my computer to have the max speed verizon gives me. WiFi works too but gives me less speed which is normal for this type of router. However Verizon accepted this router because it is a verizon router , but because was used and configured for Frontline Communications they do not provide support or troubleshooting for it. So , for Verizon Fios you need to be sure the router was use for FIOS in order to have Verizon able to access and test your router .

I bought two of these units as the first one would not turn on and had to be sent back. The second arrived and I connected it to our Frontier FIOS and went about setting up the wireless. This unit only has the old 2.4 Ghz wireless channel however the specs say up to 140 mbps. The best speed I could get was 29 mb using Speedtest.net and I always get around 50 mb using the original Frontier Frontier FiOS Gateway Router FiOS-G1100-FT(rented) router. This is the short version of trying every channel checking for any software updates (none) and finally giving up.So I will send this back and be purchasing a Frontier FiOS Gateway Router FiOS-G1100-FT. I had thought about a MoCa adapter but the price is about the same as a used Frontier FiOS Gateway Router FiOS-G1100-FT so there it is.

First of all, it came with 120V cable, not 12V AC/DC adapter, Second, it never had a password for this serial number, so I would never be able to connect to internet. I was forced to run and send almost $160 on one so I didn’t have to reschedule Verizon to come back out a week later. Very disappointed. IMPORTANT: Connect the cable from the FIOS box (wall, i guess) to the WAN.For some this may state the obvious. For me and some of us, it may help cut down on frustration. I had the Gateway 1100 under the impression I was on the ‘rent to buy’ program… long story short, Verizon sent me THIS router on the ‘buy’ end. (you read it right. After paying the full price of the Gateway in rent, they sent me a crappy older router…. good ol’ verizon….). I connected this the same way the G1100 was connected. Willy-nilly as it turns out… The G1100 is a lot more forgiving, working great though apparently connected to the wrong port. So, on THIS (Actionetec) I could not get a good connection, I could not connect more than one device at the same time, I was getting a message that there was another device connected with the same IP. a) That should not be happening, the router should have its own (known) static IP and assign dynamic IPs to other devices. b) the router would also get random IPs. Not good. Called tech support. Well… another VERY VERY VERY long story short, after *finally* getting to tech support, the guy asks the right question: is the RJ45 cable connected to the WAN port? Welll… no… So he gives me the rundown: Connect the cable to the WAN. Wait for the lights to start. Turn on computer 1, is it connecting? Yes! What is its IP? Random? Good. What is the router’s IP? The one you expect it to be? (192…… etc) . Yes. Good again! Connect computer2 on WiFi. On the internet? No conflicts? Good. Move on to the phone, then to the remainder devices. So, why 3 stars? For the frustration factor. And for the form factor: open holes will allow dust to settle on board. And for the fact that it is single band. Only 2.4 Ghz. And because I didn’t pay $15… More like $150… Had I paid $15, I would have considered this an absolute bargain.
