Maybe I got a unit with a bad binned processor like many others. It comes with a tiny heatsink with a cheap foam thermal interface. It worked great for about a week then started getting the speed issues. Had to reboot the device every few hours. Every time I go to reboot the device, I notice how hot it is. I took temperature measurements with a probe on my fluke multimeter and it was reading 89 celsius! About 192 degrees F. I took it apart and that’s when I noticed the tiny heatsink. The heatsink had quite a bit of play in it with just a little pressure so I twisted completely around and it popped off. I’ve replaced the heatsink with one that’s at least 3 times the size and punch out a small trapezoid shape out of the side of the unit. It has worked flawlessly since, almost 3 weeks now and not a single reboot. New temps read about 67 celsius. Still a bit hot but no where near as bad. I’ve included pictures of the original heatsink and the one that I have in the unit. Sorry I couldn’t take photos of the one inside the unit when it was out of the case. I had some left over arctic silver epoxy that I used to attach the new heatsink to the processor. I’ll probably add a small low seed fan sometime in the future. Nice device but if Arris didn’t cheap out and actually put a decent heatsink on, it’d probably have all 5 stars.

Only had an issue once and Arris replaced the modem right away with no hassle; for some reason the ethernet cable jack wasn’t properly connecting (possibly loose connector). I’m on Comcasts 75Mbps Blast plan and actually all 16 of the download channels are getting used (image below).

Fantastic modem for my TWC 200/20 service in Richardson, TX. I had been leasing a modem (Ubee DDW36C1) which provided shoddy wireless reliability. I had called TWC to replace the unit with an ARRIS modem/router, but they never fulfilled my request, so I went ahead and purchased this guy out right, losing the monthly leasing fee and picked up a AirPort Extreme to do the wireless bit. Attached is SpeedTest results using SB6183 and AirPort Extreme.Very happy with this modem!

I liked this modem…while it worked. Almost exactly a year after I bought it, the modem failed and would no longer download anything. I’m stuck now with a modem that is worthless. For the price, it should last a lot longer. Here is what I don’t like…the BRIGHT BLUE lights that will not go off…ever. The lights are so bright that the room that this in will be lit up.

Performs flawlessly and gives me no problems. I needed this for Cox Ultimate, which has an advertised speed of 300 Mb/s, so I needed a 16×4 modem. I bought a 16×4 modem earlier (cough cough Netgear) and it had issues going over 270 Mb/s. However, this one does 300 Mbps flawlessly and even exceeds that as you can see in the picture. Actually, on Steam I have achieved 370 Mb/s! Truly outstanding. I was disappointed to see they included a Cat 5e cable, which is only rated for 100 Mbps. Luckily I had some Cat 7 laying around, but Cat 6 will work for 100+ too.Would buy again!

Works great, easy to hook up and configure. Pays for it self in the long run (saves me $15/month on modem lease). Speeds went from 20 mb to 100+mb

Great product. Very easy to setup and connect with my router. Much better and faster than paying 10$ a month from TWC for some really slow old modem. This modem will last for years to come and keep up with any technology changes and faster speeds I may need in the future. I linked this up with the TP Link Archer C-9 and consistently see the speeds I pay for. Currently on TWC 50MBPS download/5MBPS upload and I always get that speed or faster. Great modem, looks sleek and clean, highly recommend.

I got this to replace an older cable modem (Motorola SB6121) to ensure I would get the best connection possible now and for future service upgrades from my cable company (Time Warner).Very easy to setup and took about 10 minutes for Time Warner to activate it over the phone.Download and upload specs are the same as compared to the SB6121 using speedtest.net, however, websites seem to load faster. I also seem get better connection speeds on my PS4 for on-line gaming or video and music streaming.I also like how this cable modem is designed. It is a very attractive looking device, especially, in a dark room. It looks beautiful with a blue, violet glow. (see my photos)

Replaced an ossified, geriatric LinkSys docsis2 with this modem because I upgraded the cable pipe to 100Mbps. Called Cox, gave them the S# and MAC ID, and was provisioned in 5 minutes – about as easy as it gets. Modem does exactly what it’s supposed to, all 16 down and 4 up channels bonded, no issues, minor corrected re-transmits on 2-3 down channels. Runs warm to the touch, but not hot by any means. And yes, the LEDs shining through the case holes and the front do make an unavoidable night light. Got it paired with an Asus RT-N66U N900 router and I’m getting consistent 130Mbps speedtests since install. Cat6e/2.4Mhz/5.0Mhz connections with 4-12 active devices have had zero buffering issues, excellent combo, I’m extremely pleased! Between this and the other mfg’s 16×4 modem, I don’t think you can go wrong choosing an SB6183 – play the odds – no denying the # of 5* reviews…

This device is providing a downstream connection 116% faster than the max listed on my service contract from comcast. There have been no connection issues since it was activated.

I purchased this to replace my Comcast modem. I have to say it was extremely simple to set up. A powercord, cable hook up and Ethernet port, no extra ports or anything. 4 simple lights on the front, plus a diagram that tells you exactly what they mean though it is pretty obvious. Speeds are at least as good as with the modem I was paying $10/mo for. I did have to call Comcast to have them activate this modem but that took less than 10 minutes. I am so glad I purchased this!

Amazing speed! Paired with my ASUS A68U and am running speeds higher than I’m paying for. I pay for 200down/20up and am receiving over that even on wifi! Great upgrade and a good price!

When you look critically at modems it doesn’t take you long to realize that the Arris Surfboard product line is the easy winner. The choice then comes down to whether you get SB6183 or SB6141. Honestly, for $30 less and speeds up to 343Mbps the SB6141 should seem like an easy choice for 99% of people. But I decided to opt for the SB61483 for three reasons.- Comcast is listing the SB6141 in such a way that makes me think it will be considered end-of-life soon while the SB6183 is still very much current.- The SB6183 has 16 channels down as opposed to just 8 on the SB6141. Theoretically this means that at peak times you are less likely to experience your speed slowing down. Be aware your service area must be configured to support this otherwise those channels don’t help.- Comcast used to charge me $10 a month to rent a modem/router, so the extra $30 will pay itself back quickly.I do have one gripe about the box though. My issue is that the designers made the indicator LEDs brighter than the lights used to illuminate football fields at night. I initially placed mine on the shelf under my TV and trying to watch TV was like having headlights pointed into my eyes. I recommend welder’s goggles to avoid long term retina damage. No joke, these things are so bright that the light from them seeps under the door into my bedroom and is bright in there. Even considering the efficiency of LEDs I’m concerned my next electric bill will reflect the fact that I’ve used more power than a mid-sized office building to create this much illumination. But I’m a resourceful dude so I figured I would just fold a piece of paper over a few times and tape it over the front of the box to shield my eyes from this Eye of Sauron.Well, that should have worked. Unfortunately, every surface of the box other than the base is covered with air vent holes. I was afraid I would cause the device of overheat if I blocked those vents, so at this point I got kind of desperate so I took out the 1 and only screw and cut a slip in the sticker on the bottom so that I could open to box up. As you can see from the attached pictures, the LEDs are deigned so that they actually face out of the box and only a small amount of light makes it to the indicators on the front. I did the very best I could to cover this with electrical tape, but because of the way it is mounted in there it is hard cover the under side. This made the problem about 50% better but it is still bright enough to act as a night light for the entire living room and kitchen.I may be certifiable for knocking off two stars for a cosmetic problem on a modem, but these are my feelings…***UPDATE***I’ve changed my review from 3 stars to 4. This is due to the helpful comment from J. Cohen which gave me hope that I could switch off the lights. However, my hopes were dashed when I realized the solution turned off all lights EXCEPT the power LED. It’s a bit like learning you can get rid of MOST of the rats in your bed. I guess it makes it better, but I’m still uncomfortable. If you want to do this yourself here are the step:1) Open a browser window.2) Type the following number into your address bar: 192.168.100.13) Go to the Configuration tab.4) Set “Turn off front panel LEDs except power LED” to “Enable”5) Rejoice that you’ve turned off 75% off the blinding spotlights

DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!I haven’t even had this connected for a month and it malfunctioned (I disconnected the power to move it and that permanently damaged it), so now I have to spend money on another one!!The brand stated “Motorola”, however it’s actually manufactured by ARRIS and it’s a piece of $#!+ PERIOD

Living in Indianapolis, there aren’t many options for internet service providers. After researching our options, I went with Comcast. We got a deal for 50/10 internet (Blast!) and sometime last year they upgraded blast to 75/10.We have consistently, in the entirety of our time with Comcast, never been able to get the speeds we pay for. We’ve traded out our modem thinking that was the cause, but eventually chalked it up to the fact that we live in an apartment complex with dozens of other wifi signals bogging ours down. After Comcast raised their modem rental cost to $10 I started considering our own modem. I set a price alert for the SB6141 and after it hit my price, I started the process to buy it. Last minute I decided to check Comcast’s site to see how their compatibility was with the SB6141 and realized it had been marked end-of-life.Wanting to be able to use the modem in the years to come, I looked at the alternatives and found this. Went through the price alert business again and a few weeks ago it hit my price. I grabbed it up immediately.Since it doesn’t have wifi built in, I sprung for the Archer C7. When they both arrived I went about setting them up. Setup was painless; I plugged it in, waited for the lights to go solid, went to comcast.com/activate and went through the activation. Voila! Internet.Speedtest.net was my first stop and if anything I’m mad that we didn’t do this sooner because we’re averaging 90/12 speeds now, even on wifi. Across the house. Now Comcast and I are getting along swimmingly.

AMAZING SPEED!..I just got this modem a few days ago and wanted to share my test results. I’m on Comcast paying for 250mb down/25mb up, but I’m getting 299mb down/30mb up speeds, and I’m about 100+ft away from my WiFi router that is in the leaving room and this is reaching my bedroom all the way at the other end of the house. I have no more to say just AMAZING!… I recommend this modem to anyone. Just an FYI, I am using the Netgear Nighthawk X4S AC2600 router.

This is my second ARRIS within 3 years… I have two dead ones lying in my garage, I vowed that I will never buy this manufacturers product again. It is made so flimsy that it is already dead.

I must admit it took me 6 months to muster up the energy to install this. The hardware is simple to install by just plugging in. The potential tricky part is setting it up with your internet service provider which will require you to jump through a few hoops if that’s what is required. Immediately after installing I saw a large boost in performance with my upload and download speed. The only downside I can see with this modem is the fact that there are holes on right side (as seen in the picture) If you are sensitive to light at night and like to have your router and modem in your room then I would consider another product or to tactically place it so you don’t have to sleep with a blue glow around you.Price 8/10Quality 9/10Ease to install 9/10Looks 9/10Functionality 10/10Overall 9/10

Great little modem. Wish they made it in black when I ordered. I had a DCOS 2.0 modem for the longest time, was paying for 25 Mbps (megabits per second), and I was getting around 28 Mbps as shown my SpeedTest.net Comcast kept sending me automated phone calls to upgrade to a DCOS 3.0, and I just didn’t feel like spending the money, because I was already getting more than what I was paying. Well, after almost three years of automated phone calls and some router issues, I decided to just purchase both a new router and modem this time.Modem hooked up easily to my network, no issues. Set everything up on the router, and fired it up. Went to SpeedTest.net, and I am now literally getting on average 91 Mbps. YES, MORE THAN 3X my previous speed, and I am STILL only paying for 25 Mbps. Couldn’t be happier, and thankfully it has been that way for almost a year now. It’s an absolute crime that these ISPs have all the bandwidth they want to give out, they just decided to bottleneck it into different packages and sell each one at a premium. Couldn’t be happier.

Never will 300MBPS be available in these back woods cable runs but BLAST! is better than ever @180D12UJULY 2017 Update – It’s getting ever closer to 300! – Now pulling 240 almost every time! Fun fact, Comcast does not regulate/throttle bandwidth in the boonies. Not enough businesses to care.It runs at a hot to the touch temp but darn that internet speed is faster.

I have Spectrum (formerly Time Warner Cable) and I wanted to upgrade to the 200Mbps package since it was an extra $10/mo over the 100Mbps package. Since I had the old ARRIS SURFboard SB6141, it wasn’t compatible with speeds higher than 100Mbps so I had to either rent a modem for $8/mo from Spectrum or I had to buy a new modem. I did the math and found I’d be better off going buying the modem since I’d pay the cost of the modem in 10ish months and my SB6141 lasted me many years, so I figured it’d be a good investment.Anyway, after I got the modem, I connected it, called Spectrum, told them I had a new modem to activate, they asked for some information on the modem, and it was done. Speeds are now 200/20 and the connection has been solid for months.

This had an immediate improvement on my internet performance!Easy to installBefore I bought this modem I rented the modem/router comcast provided and my internet connection would always crash or be super slow. I then would have to call comcast to fix the issue and reset the equipment. After a while I got fed up and I started looking for a new modem and router so wouldn’t have to keep calling customer service. I found this modem and the TP-Link Archer C7 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (AC1750). My internet experience has never been better. The modem itself is small and at night it displays a colorful array of lights through the holes on its side. if this is a problem just cover it at night with a shirt. I personally like the lights.

Pushing 380 / 35 with Cox cable ISP. Called in, gave my MAC and Serial. Identified as an RGI6183 (RGI = Retail General Instrument, which was Motorola before, and now Arris). My connection is hot into my house, +8 to +6 on 800 Mhz channels and +5 to +3 on 900 Mhz channels, so I do have a 3db attenuator in line to get things back in spec a bit. Upload is about 45db with attenuator installed. The analyzer at 192.168.100.1:8080 is pretty cool and not really in the documentation either.

Like most folks I bought the modem to eliminate my cable provider’s monthly rental fee and after a little research it should pay for itself in 8 months. From delivery by USPS to installation and being back up and running took 40 mins. I’m an Optimum (Cablevision) customer in Brooklyn on the 100/35 plan. I swapped out the modems, connecting my laptop directly to the new modem. Launched chrome and followed the onscreen prompts entering my Optimum account number, Account holder last name, the phone number connected to the account and the new modem MAC ID (written on the bottom). It did it’s thing and I was off to the races in 10 mins. Several people have stated that the modem doesn’t work with Optimum but that’s because they bought the wrong model. The SB6183 works fine with Optimum (Cablevision)! The SB6190 WILL NOT WORK because their network doesn’t currently support those connection speeds and may not for sometime so the SB6190 isn’t supported.

great product and easy to set up with infinity comcast! I first went with the Netgear model the 1900-C6300 and after Three hours of talking to Comcast and Netgear service support we learned that I was having DNS errors we tried everything and for paying $180 for that modem I was not happy. So I went back and I purchased this Arris SBG6950AC2 model And it was basically plug and play I didn’t even need to really call Comcast because I logged on using the web browser on my iPad and I was able to do everything remotely as it went directly to the activation page for Areis. Your results may vary but that’s what it happened to me using Comcast ISP. I cont recommend the netgear model and less you’re good at changing your DNS and your MAC address in the advance settings and completing resets, and spending a lot of time. Basically it’s a bit more complicated than just plug-and-play like the model from Aris

I bought the SB6183 last year and have had no problems. The modem works great. The modem is definitely not my binding constraint for speed, it’s Comcast Xfinity package. I’m getting 100 Mbps down and 6 up. Initially setting up the modem with Comcast was a pain, I had to read them the MAC address and serial number, and then it took them a while to send the software to use it. I can no longer restart my modem using the Xfinity app, however that’s no problem, it’s easy to unplug it. I have an apple airport for wifi.

We called Comcast and asked for “Modem activation and re-provision!” We then called Arris for router naming of network in order to secure Our network with Our own password while disabling blue LED lights! No issues and no $11 monthly rental equipment!

This is the best dual band modem router for RCN Customer. I’m using 250 mpbs internet now. I tried Motorolla MG7540 but it didn’t have long range and strong signal so I switched to ARTIS SURFboard SBG6950AC2 DOCSIS 3.0. Really one if the best dual band modem router I have been using till now. It has long range and strong internet signal.

Oh, I am so happy to have a simple, regular, modem-only modem again. I have never had good luck with an all-in-one unit. One of the weirder problems I was having with Spectrums routers, was certain things just taking a long time to connect. Messages in Messenger would take a long time to send, etc.Since switching out the Spectrum modem and activating this one, I have had no problems at all. It was (the modem) a little smaller than I had envisioned, but it works great. I just had to call Spectrum and give them the HFC MAC address and that was it. Very easy.

Replaced my supposeded “top of the line” xfinity modem with the 16×4 sb6183 modem and Ac1750 router. The set up was incredibly easy, quick call to Xfinity and they registered it no problem. The initial set up of the router also a breeze. Not only am I experiencing more range out 2.4 and 5.0 frequencies but the also getting the 150+mbps that I’m paying for. Where as with their modem I topped out at 100mbps.I haven’t experienced any drop connections as others have stated.

Good modem it just gets very, very hot. I keep all of my electronics in a box below my tv to hide everything as I find unbidden hardware not to be aesthetically pleasing. Keeping the modem, a router, Apple TV, and PS4 in a box causes the PS4 to overheat with the top of the box closed. I just keep it open to avoid the problem. I wish it had two jacks to plug Ethernet cables into, it has just one.

This is for the Arris SURFboard SB6183 16×4 Docsis 3.0 cable modem (white). I had the technician from Optimum come to install the internet service (Optimum 200 in this case) and he was not able to get my Arris SB6183 modem to connect. The technician got their rented modem (Arris TM1602A) to work and told me to call in later to check if my Arris SB6183 can be registered to work with their service. I called in and had the representative helped me with a walk-through in registering the modem, and the Arris SB6183 works with Optimum! Please note that it does not indicate on the box that it will work with Optimum, and also Optimum will not say on their website if this modem is compatible with them. You have to call in or do the online registration of the SB6183 modem yourself. I just wanted to say that it certainly works with the Optimum 200 plan that I am getting for $39.99/month. Very good modem and gives great results.

This is a small unit at 5.5 inches tall. It works great. The only thing I wish I knew before I bought it was that it lights up a blue color and stays on all the time. It gets warm too and puts out the heat. I think it will be nice in the winter months, but not in the summer. There are vent holes on 3 sides so I would imagine you cannot lay it down due to the heat and need to vent it. Overall, it’s a nice unit so far and works nice. I just wish it didn’t have the blue light.

This this was great, easy to set up! Just hooked evry thing up, called my ISP (Spectrum) to activate the box and within minutes it was up and running. Easy purchase to save 10$ on equipment rental on your monthly bill.

Since I’m finally migrating from a 3Mbit/s Centurylink DSL connection to Charter, I decided to purchase my own modem rather than get one of the WiFi modems they provide, because not only do I crave full network control, but I already have an existing, insanely overbuilt wireless infrastructure; AC1200 primary router for the family, and a Nighthawk x6 AC3200 router for my personal setup, all on a measely 3Mbit line.I don’t have the Charter line installed yet, so I haven’t been able to test actual connection performance. However, I am very happy to discover, that not only does it give me full control over the features, but *there are no features!* That means no firewall to disable or open, no port management system, absolutely nothing. And with my setup, that’s a plus; My ADSL2+ modem has an entire security suite that I had to disable, and that took time. If I don’t disable this stuff, I have network conflicts as a result, with double NAT, double firewalls, doubled portforwarding, and so on. Considering I occasionally start up and use server equipment and/or software, it’s basically a necessity to make sure that there are no double provisions that cockblock each other; I couldn’t even run a basic web storage server back before I figured out that modems and routers/switches don’t work well together unless configured properly. And to top it off, this modem is Qualified for all the way up to Charter 300Mbit if I wanted to up my plan in the future. Though the upload speed won’t change, so that is a bit of a turnoff when it comes to moving up a plan.Definitely happy with what I’m seeing so far, if I remember to I’ll update this review after properly evaluating the performance after the RG-6 lead gets installed by the scheduled tech. I’d do it myself but I don’t know where the pre-installation line from the road is located, and I’m not about to find out considering the weather that’s dominated my area recently. Cold and wet does not make for a happy IT guy.
