Why Choose DOCSIS 3.1 Technology?

DOCSIS 3.1 is the newest and most advanced technology for cable modems. It offers up to 10 times faster download speeds and up to 1,000 times faster upload speeds than DOCSIS 3.0. It also supports more bandwidth, more channels, and more devices on your network. With DOCSIS 3.1, you can enjoy smoother online experiences, lower latency, and better quality of service.

Arris SB8200 Cable Modem: Optimized for Comcast Gigabit & Gigabit Plus Plans

The SB8200 modem has many features that make it stand out from other modems. Here are some of them:

  • Two 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports, which allow you to connect multiple devices and enjoy reliable and secure wired connections. You can also use them to create two separate home networks or to enable link aggregation for faster speeds.
  • 32 downstream x 8 upstream DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channels, or 2 downstream x 2 upstream OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 channels, which provide enough channels to support seamless connectivity and avoid congestion and interference.
  • Supports both IPv4 and IPv6 standards, which ensure future-proof compatibility and performance. IPv6 is the next generation of internet protocol that offers more security, privacy, and efficiency.
  • Compatible with Cox, Xfinity, and other major U.S. cable internet providers, and can save you money by owning your own modem instead of renting one. You can also use it with any Wi-Fi router of your choice.

Works great out of the box with Comcast 300mbps in Seattle. Did have to call to register it. Replaced an earlier generation from 3 years ago. Nice to have the option to upgrade to 1gbps speeds if I choose and keep the same modem.

Admittedly I have owned this unit for only three days. My experience so far has been 100 percent positive. In Washington DC I am paying RCN for 330 Mbps service but am actually getting speeds slightly above 600 Mbps. Furthermore, both of its Ethernet ports have been enabled by RCN, although I am actually using only one of them.Modem runs somewhat warm – but not hot. Do not regard this as a problem.

Out of the box it has intermittent connectivity and was faulty. I was replacing an Arris so I expected it to be a seamless and easy transition but ended up having to factory reset and contact customer service who said to return due to now working correctly.

I received the modem and immediately began having network connectivity issues. I was upgrading from a surfboard 6141 DOCSIS 3.0 and had Comcast come out to my house 6 times over the course of 3 months to try and diagnose/resolve the issue. Several/multiple times a day my WiFi router would freeze up and the only method of recovery was to unplug the modem which would correct the issue. In some instances wired connections would work but be very slow while WiFi would not. I’m the end I called the manufacturer and they replaced the modem under warranty and it is functioning properly now. I had to pay to ship the modem back and the manufacturer covered return shipping.

I replaced an older version of a Surfboard modem when the local cable company decided not to support that old beast. Coming online the first time was a bit of a pain; but that was due to the internet provider not to this modem.I am getting about 700meg a bits per second – which is the speed rating for my lines. Well worth the money to get the speed that I had been paying for.

This review is not for Arris. Product was reportedly activated and returned to Amazon. Be prepared to return the unit if it’s been registered to another account. Call your cable provider to confirm. Lesson learned.

I moved cables from SB6141 to SB8200, flashing lights turned solid in about five minutes, I activated the device on Comcast page, and a few minutes later everything was copasetic. I’m counting on this modem to last until I’m 112 years old.

Based on some online discussions among modem cognoscenti at DSL Reports, I decided to try the Arris SB8200 modem, which is a competitor for my Netgear CM1000 gig-speed modem. There seems to be some perception that the Arris modem is better built and seemed to provide yet quicker navigation among websites even though the measured speed and other characteristics of the Arris and Netgear are more or less equivalent. In addition, the Arris SB8200 (along with the Netgear CM1000 and Motorola MB8600) are the three modems certified by Comcast to work with their gig-speed service which I have.I was able to automatically activate the new Arris SB8200 modem via Comcast/Xfinity’s activation webpage. No phone call to support was necessary. The activation process went smoothly and completed in less than two minutes.Measured wireless speed at my house proved to be faster with the Arris SB8200 than it was with the Netgear CM1000. I also think page to page navigation is in fact a bit quicker now with the Arris modem. With the DumaOS software of my Netgear CR500 router and various internet speed tests, it also seems like the latency has been further reduced. The SB8200 does run a bit on the warm side, but since it is not in a ventless cabinet, that does not seem to be a problem. Many will want to cover the front panel lights, as I have, with a few layers of white electrical tape to reduce the distractingly bright glow of the front panel lights. While black electrical tape is more efficient at light blocking, the white is better in this application because the modem case is all white and thus the tape is almost invisible.

Worked fine for 124 days then dead. Now I’m going to have to pay Cox to come out and replace it with a rental modem so I can get my business back online.I’ve never had an issue with a modem. They should be install and forget. This one is just junk.

Excellent product of great quality. Item was exactly as pictured on the site. Description was accurate as well. Shipping arrived on-time and matched the shipping time that was listed on the Amazon website. Great seller and I hope to buy from them again. Thanks.

I’ve had this since March 2018. Today is JULY 18th, 2018. This modem officially died today. This is the shortest a modem has ever lasted me, and because it constantly ran so hot, I even had a usb fan set beside it to always keep it cool and from overheating (which it often did prior to adding the fan). Not a happy customer.

I spent almost 3 hours between Comcast & Arris trying to troubleshoot what is the problem with this new cable modem we were trying to activate. I was replacing my outdated but working Motorola surfboard docsis 3.0 with this SB8200 and the unit won’t even go online. Comcast changed the MAC and push the firmware change but won’t take it. We did the reset, still no good. Arris and Comcast declared this as defective modem and I am getting a replacement from Amazon. When you are buying the most expensive modem available there is certain expectation that manufacturer will do the quality control that the customers deserve. This product does not deserve the price it is asking us to pay. Bad product.

Arris make the best modems IMO. Switching could not have been easier, swap cables from old modem, wait for boot up, activate and you’re done.Just a bit silly my 2 year old Arris was already obsolete and caused me issues on cable networks. As soon as I activated this, no more dropouts, transfer spikes, etc.

I bought this modem because my old modem started failing & couldn’t handle data streaming.Cox offered a free modem upgrade, but I ended up buying a new one because the particular model they provided didn’t work at all at my place.(Replaced the same model 2 times – all 3 didn’t work. Arranged an appointment with a Cox technician, he didn’t have a clue)I wanted to tried a different modem, but Cox store said that’s the only model they have for free upgrade.Oddly, the one cox offered was also Arris Surfboard modem.I chose this one because spec looked promising, and I had good experience with Surfboard modems.I probably had 5~6 different modems so far. Two my last modems were Surfboard models, which lasted long and stable.(my old modem is Motorola Surfboard modem)However, this one had issues from the beginning.Internet through ethernet cable worked, but it didn’t feed data into routers (I know it’s modem’s problem because I tried more than 1 router).Tried power cycle probably like a dozen times. It suddenly began to work when I was about to give up.I was happy for less than 12 hours until the next morning it began not working again, restarting itself repeatedly. Now I lost confidence in Arris Surfboard modems and had no choice but to return.I bought Motorola MG7700 instead, which doesn’t show any problem so far.

Very unreliable – have to reboot daily to keep my internet alive. Went from Arris SB6141 D3.0 to SB8200 D3.1 to improve throughput – this device just doesn’t deliver. Speed tests show it is capable but the Software/Hardware combo isn’t a great match.First obvious issue is heat generation- I’ve never seen a modem get this hot before. I suspect it’s overheating and failing to deliver reliable networking.Second core issue is constant reboots necessary to keep my internet online. Going back to my D3.0 for now – will keep looking for the right fit. Arris just doesn’t deliver with this product and is not typical with my previous experience with them.

Extremely disappointed as I’ve never had any issues with Arris brand modems. Overheats and the signal drops major! Lost 600 Mbs, my wife couldn’t watch Netflix and I couldn’t play on the PC.

I really like this modem. I didn’t need gigabit functionality but I figured for $80 more why not, plus resale value would be better should I decide to sell it in a year or two.I am using this without issue on Optimum Online 400/40/NJ. You do have to activate the modem manually, but you don’t have to call in or anything. Just enter the MAC address and you are good to go.Within 2-3 days of activating the modem it bounced a few times for “Resetting the cable modem due to docsDevResetNow”. From doing research this was done by someone at OOL. Not exactly sure what they were doing but perhaps they were just confirming my provisioning.Don’t buy this if you have a TM1602 thinking you will get better speed or fix any possible PUMA issues. Buy this or similar modem (non gigabit) to save $10/m lease fee.

I bought this to replace my providers modem that I was renting. This is the perfect solution. It is faster than my providers Modem with my new Gigabit internet, and much much smaller. It will pay itsefl off in one year and then the savings start. Great quality, easy set up and small footprint. Only wish it came in black.

Yes, even though it is not currently on Spectrum’s approved list of devices, the Arris SB8200 will in fact work just fine with their services.I purchased mine as a replacement of the SB6190 which started fumbling after lightning surged the power to the device. After plugging in the coax, I got the much desired steady green and blue lights. Then I called Spectrum’s technical support to activate a modem. They, of course, told me the modem is not listed as approved, but they offered to test it anyways. It activated, then it provisioned, and then I had a thoroughly surprised technician on the phone asking me questions about the modem and it’s capabilities. My speed test’s are spot on (I’m even getting close to 100 mbps more than I pay for!).

Comcast/Xfinity notified me that there was a speed increase on my plan from 150 Mbps to 250 Mbps. This is late July 2018. So I ran a speedtest at speedtest.comcast.net and could not get higher than the speeds for the 150 Mpbs plan (plus 20%). I was using the Arris Surfboard SB6183. Long story short, I bought the SB8200 because I thought that the SB6183 was not able to reach the 250 Mbps with Comcast. Installed the SB8200, activated it online, and ran the speedtest. Very fast! Maybe this will save you some time trouble shooting why the SB6183 isn’t delivering the 250 Mbps. Just upgrade to the SB8200. I’ve only been using it for 1 hour but it is very good.

I bought this from b b when my previous surfboard modem kept losing my internet connection after working successfully for years. When I plugged the new SB8200 into my power strip, the lights would just flash rhythmically, and the cable company could not set it up on their end. I had a house call from the cable company (75 dollars) and the tech said the SB8200 was DOA. But after some research, I read that it is best to plug a cable modem directly into an outlet, and sure enough, it worked. But because the cable company charged me 75 dollars and offered no solutions, and then took away my landline, I switched to a provider that uses fiberoptics, and am glad I did. b b would not accept my return of the SB8200 (guess who just lost a customer), which is very possibly defective (at least, according to the highly skilled cable tech). My advice, plug it into an outlet or try a different outlet, and hope it lasts long enough to justify the price. Or switch to a company that uses fiberoptics, and does not use cable modems.

The reason for the 5 stars is because it just works. I purchase it to replace my SB6190 that was working with my 200/20 Spectrum service. I have been waiting since the initial availability of the service to see if it was put in the allowed modems Spectrum list but after more than a year it has not happened. I had not seen any comments of successful installations in services other than with Comcast and Cox (as it should be because they are the only ones so far that have it in their modems lists). Anyway, I decided to try and after a call to Spectrum support even though it was not on their list they were able to provision it and it worked. There was no magic, it simply kept working but there was a little improvement on the ping times for me because it went from 18 to 11ms and the upload to 22mbps so nothing earth-shattering. If you are satisfied with your SB6190 there is no need to replace it right now.To sum it up, the modem is working but as a DOCSIS 3.0 one because there is no availability of gigabit services in my area yet (the highest I could go is 300/30 in the Winter Haven area but at least I am ready to jump as soon as it is available.

!!Important information about the front panel LEDs for Comcast Xfinity DOCSIS 3.1 service!!If you have DOCSIS 3.1 service available in your area with Comcast, they do not currently support DOCSIS 3.1 for the UPSTREAM (SEND) channels. They support DOCSIS 3.1 for the DOWNSTREAM (RECEIVE) channels, only. What this means is that the modem will show a BLUE light (DOCSIS 3.1 indication) for the RECEIVE channels and a GREEN light (DOCSIS 3.0) for the SEND channels. This is really not an issue, as the RECEIVE channels are the most important for most all users, as the download speed is usually what most people are concerned about. The reason I am posting this is because I spent a lot of time on the phone with Comcast, ARRIS, Comcast, and then a Comcast technician, due to not having a blue SEND light showing. Not ONE technical support person (not even ARRIS) knew this or mentioned that the blue SEND light would not come on, as there was no DOCSIS 3.1 currently available for the UPSTREAM channels! As a matter-of-fact, the Comcast technician said that the modem was defective…which it wasn’t.The modem works fantastic and was a replacement to the Comcast Xfinity XB6 Gigabit Gateway I was using. I highly recommend this new SB8200 modem. But, make sure you have available, and are subscribed to, the DOCSIS 3.1 service at your location. If you are not paying for DOCSIS 3.1 service, adding a 3.1 modem will not give it to you. This is a solid modem!

This modem single handedly took my internet down and caused hours of frustration. I upgraded to Comcast/Xfinity Gig service so I had to upgrade my SB6190 (direct step down of this) to this SB8200.What I didn’t know before spending about 5 hours fighting with this is that it had arrived dead. It came on and all the lights were working but it would never get all the lights going. Receive would go solid, send would go solid after a LONG time but online would never go solid. Then it would go back to neither send or receive being solid. So I called Comcast thinking they just had to activate it (I tried on my own already with their activation site). So the rep on the phone manually added this modem to my account but said she can’t send anything to it and deemed it defective and said I should call Arris. I called Arris and when the factory reset didn’t work he said yes it’s bad. This is where my story with this modem really gets bad. As I’m currently without any internet I hook the SB6190 back up but now it too won’t go online, the lights are better than the 8200 it’s just the online that won’t go solid. So I call Comcast back and they confirm what I suspect, it won’t go online because the (dead) 8200 is the active modem on my account. So they go to switch back to the 6190 and wouldn’t you know it their system won’t let them because the 6190 can’t handle my gig service. Their system will not let them add a modem that won’t fully support the current speed of the account. As long as it’s the active modem on the higher speed it’s fine but once it’s taken off it can’t be added back.So I say can I switch back to my slower speed to at least get my internet back up and they say that it wouldn’t take effect same day at this time of day anyway. So that’s it I’m stuck with my internet completely down for an entire night because this 8200 was faulty brand new out of the box and my 6190 Can’t be added back to my account. By being dead, this modem caused about 5 hours of banging my head against the wall and entire night with no internet service.I hate to give this bad review just because I happened to receive a bad unit, so consider this a review of the quality control rather than the model of modem. Just beware anyone that upgrades their internet speed and buys an upgraded modem, you can get caught in a situation where NEITHER work and you just have no internet period.

Works great. Solid connection, just like the SB6121 it replaced. I use it with Comcast, I just gave them the MAC address off the modem’s label and it was up & running right away. My 6121 topped out for me at about 120-130 MBps, the 8200 came in at 160 (I’m sure the 8200 goes way faster than that, but I have a 150MBps data plan at the moment.)A word of caution about installation: I used this modem to replace a Motorola SB6121 which is a slower DOCSIS 3.0 predecessor to this modem, and from outward appearance is almost identical. I thought I’d be lazy and reuse the 6121’s power adapter rather than the one that came with the 8200 so that I didn’t have to fish the power cable through the back of my cabinet. The 6121’s adapter plugged into the back of the 8200, no problem, so I thought it was fine. But, for the next few hours I couldn’t figure out why the 8200 kept resetting itself whenever I tried to put it under heavy load. Then I realized that the 8200 requires almost three times the current that the 6121 requires (2000 mA vs. 750 mA.) After replacing my old power adapter with the one that came with the 8200, it worked fine. So, make sure you use the included power supply or at least one that meets its specs.
