How to Activate Arris SBG7580-AC
Activating your Arris SBG7580-AC is the first step you need to take after unboxing your new modem. It’s a fairly simple process, and we recommend setting aside about an hour of your time to ensure you’re able to complete the whole activation.
- Plug in your new modem the same as the one it’s replacing. Make sure power cable is plugged in and coaxial cable is screwed in on the back as well. It’s recommended to do this and then wait an hour before calling your provider, if possible, so that your modem can download whatever firmware is needed for the activation.
- Next, call your provider and let them know that you’re doing an activation with a self-install of your new modem. They’ll ask you for a few of the numbers on the bottom of the unit and then proceed to get your modem added to your account and service plan.
- The call will end after the representative verifies with you that you have an internet connection. You can test this for yourself simply by visiting a few websites.
Your modem is now activated!
How to Reset Arris SBG7580-AC
Resetting your Arris SBG7580-AC is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:
- Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
- Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
- You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
- Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.
Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.
How to Find Your IP Address
This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.
- Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
- In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
- When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
- Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

I have been using this modem and being frustrated by my cable provider that I still had latency and packet loss only to find out something rather terrible. My cable providers technician informed me that the Puma 6 chipset in this modem has some problems for anyone needing consistent real time traffic (e.g. gaming, streaming, rtp). This problem is severe enough to have prompted a class action lawsuit started in California. You can find more information about this problem by searching for “Arris Sued Over SB6190 Surfboard Modem Latency Flaw” (article on dlsreports has links to join class action and a copy of the complaint). Arris has not fixed this issue but has abandoned the intel chipset responsible for the problem.Summary of the issue:Assuming “normal” latency for you is say 10-20 ms there is some sort of process going on with this on chip software that causes both latency, jitter, and at times packet loss. I experienced 100-300 ms increase in latency and packet loss of about 4% over 24 hours using a constant data stream.

I bought this and it worked fine for 5 months. One morning I woke up and we were getting security errors and redirects to buy mcafee software. I called the manufacturer and after two hours of transfers and insane miscommunication, the thing is registered to someone else, and they told me I needed to return it or buy mcafee. Users can’t control the firmware settings so without buying the software, I was SOL. No thanks.

This modem/router combo has been a nightmare from the start. I can’t even stream a video on Facebook without getting lag. And we were recently upgraded to 250MB internet speed from Comcast. Yet I sit here right now, unable to even connect my tv to the internet. This product is a joke

It was easy to install and activate (Comcast). But interestingly as per the front panel LED status my modem is “receiving” using the DOCSIS 3.1 technology but sending using the backwards compatible DOCSIS 3.0 technology. I don’t believe that’s the fault of the modem. I believe that it’s the ISP that’s causing this problem so I’ll have to call them to find out why. And other than that there have been no glitches or dropped wifi. Also it comes with a quick start guide with a web address so you can register the product. After registering mine it said the warrantee was good until November of 2020. The booklet also provides a phone number should you require technical support. Overall I upgraded to this modem because for the last couple of years I was using an Arris SB 6141 which was extremely reliable and had experienced no problems with it. So as a result I stuck with the same manufacturer.

I’ve had this modem since 11/16 and it is still working great. I didn’t have to call Xfinity, as everything needed to link it to my account was online and took a few minutes. I was tired of renting the Xfinity modem, and I figured it would eventually pay for itself before I have to upgrade. My speeds are great using Xfinity’s Blast speed.
Denise White –
Nothing good about this purchase. Recommend you get a different product. I purchased this as Xfinity uses this brand and this model is on there approved list. Will not run on 5.0 GHz on play store apps, face book and other sites meaning you have to us the 2.4 GHz band which cuts your providers speed in half i.e.100 mb to 50 mb download speed. Also comes with McAFFE which tracks your internet browsing without telling you. You can not turn off McAFFE with the control panel and have to call Arris to disable which customer service is lacking. I complained to Arris and they said it was the modem router. I had to pay $10.00 replacement charge and return shipping $20.00+. received new modem router with same problem. GO ELSEWHERE!

Worked for 3 months then started dropping speed. Now works on and off. It is trying to handle 400 mgbs but often only outputs 40 mgbs. Will have to buy a new and more reliable box.

This product has issues with the intel chipset leaving it pretty slow, ISPs are supposed to push out system updates to it but dont seem to. im getting 10 download instead of the 100 download i am paying for.
