Arris TG862G Manual & Product Guides
How to Activate Arris TG862G
Activating your Arris TG862G is the first step you need to take after unboxing your new modem. It’s a fairly simple process, and we recommend setting aside about an hour of your time to ensure you’re able to complete the whole activation.
- Plug in your new modem the same as the one it’s replacing. Make sure power cable is plugged in and coaxial cable is screwed in on the back as well. It’s recommended to do this and then wait an hour before calling your provider, if possible, so that your modem can download whatever firmware is needed for the activation.
- Next, call your provider and let them know that you’re doing an activation with a self-install of your new modem. They’ll ask you for a few of the numbers on the bottom of the unit and then proceed to get your modem added to your account and service plan.
- The call will end after the representative verifies with you that you have an internet connection. You can test this for yourself simply by visiting a few websites.
Your modem is now activated!
How to Reset Arris TG862G
Resetting your Arris TG862G is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:
- Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
- Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
- You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
- Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.
Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.
How to Find Your IP Address
This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.
- Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
- In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
- When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
- Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

Works great… would be nice if a MoCa adapter was built in to eliminate the need to direct connect Cable Box for updating
Susan D –
We were hesitant to buy this because it was refurbished, but its working just great, and the price was really reasonable. Forget renting your modem, buy your own.

I bought this product on the recommendation of my cable provider, Comcast. It was a breeze to set up, and Im now saving 10.00 a month from not having to rent a router from Comcast
C. Hall –
Easy install, easy to use. However is not compatible with Comcast land line phone service. This may be due more to Comcast controls than the Arris. Overall Im satisfied.

came in well packaged with instructions. I followed the instructions for activating xfinity online, the whole process took about 45 min, I did not have to call anyone, and since then has worked perfectly.

The company emailed a note that the phone part of the modem would take a few days of connection to the internet before it could be activated by comcast. That turned out to be my experience as well. The internet was activated right away and I had to call back a few days later before the phone line could be turned on. The price was great and the company provided appropriate support.

Got this to use with new Comcast/Xfinity service. At first the installer said it wouldn’t work, but turned out they had an issue. Put this back in the next day and it was fine. No problems, and we aren’t paying to rent their unit.

Received the unit and Mediacom support assisted with initial activation. I couldn’t do it on line as I am a new Mediacom customer and don’t have access to online accoutn. Using it with TIVO and the TIVO wouldn’t connect. Mediacom stated it should work without Cat. 5. Called support for the modem and they said it needed the Cat 5. Hooked it up and it works great.
Gordon Dietz –
So far, it is working very well.

bye bye bye –
Works great with Comcast in Baltimore. After one year, Comcast began charging me for this modem, which plainly I own. Their Revenue Assurance department decided Comcast owns my modem, despite having no record they ever sent me one. On hold for an hour and counting over the course of two months they promised to fix this. What an abominable corporate citizen.

I would give this a 5 star review IF I hadnt had a hard time getting it set up to Comcast. I got it all hooked up first thing, got on line and my wifi worked. BUT when I called Comcast to get the telephone part set up they started having problems. (THE FIRST THING TO TELL COMCAST WHEN YOU CALL THEM IS LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY HAVE TO PUSH THEIR FIRMWARE INTO THE MODEM) They set and reset the modem dozens of times and I ended up and had to have a tech come out. He had a hard time and got sent to the 4th tier of support before they managed to send their firmware to my modem and I could get telephone service. But then we noticed my wifi wasnt working so we got that set up again and everything was AOK until later when I found out the wi fi was gone again. So I called and was on the phone over an hour trying to get that set up and finally I got tired and said I would try again the next day. This was after being on the phone for 2 days. The 3rd day I called customer service again with the ticket they had given me and finally I got a nice woman that had just gotten back from maternity leave and she figured it out right away. I could not set up the wi fi with my old name and password so had to use the one Arris gave me. And because it isnt an Xfinity modem I cant go on line and change the password. She gave me Arriss phone number and I called them and he told me they were unable to help me. I am up and everything is working now. Had to change devices for the new wi fi and kids will all have to change theirs when they come. BUT I dont have to pay a rental fee on my modem and I can get ride of the land line. That is taking awhile because Frontier doesnt have anyone there during the week end so cant get our old phone number switched over to Comcast until I can get a confirmation number from Frontier to give to Comcast. My mine was so weary after 3 days I went to bed and slept 10 solid hoursUPDATE: The modem came with a battery but it wouldnt charge so I had to order one from Amazon. Got it and when I opened it I thought they sent the wrong one because it was twice as long as the one that came installed in the modem, but it fit and the light quick flickering as soon as I put it in.
M. Callas –
Had no problems setting up with Comcast/Xfinity. Used iPad to get on WiFi, then a quick trip to comcast.com/activate did the rest … tv, WiFi, phone all working without a single call to a support line. Glad to be out of box rental game.

Bough this to save money and not have to rent the modem from Xfinity, works great
ST –
So far its working great. I had to change my earlier router with this one due to the voice service i started with xfinity. Intially i had hiccups as expected with xfinity but finally it worked after a comcast tech visited my home to fix it. Im saving by not renting similar device from the provider. Will update this review if i come across any further issues down the line.

This was a great replacement for my rented Comcast/Xfinity modem (with phone jack). I had no problems setting it up, and have no problems in the 4-5 months since.
Gregory Reed –
Been working flawlessly for more than a month now — so well that I forget its even there. Best of all: No rental fees to Comcast.
