I was very happy that I got ahold of this router. This router is a monster! Absolutely amazing! Thus far I have no issues with it at all.Okay, so right off that bat, you must update the firmware after you set it up… I wish the firmware was updated when it came in. But then again, it’s so simple to do, just follow directions. My speed in my house is 100mb download and 40mb upload at 5g. That is what I pay for. I tried other routers, nothing came close to the speeds I’m getting with this router. I just checked the speed and it’s 117 download and 45 upload!! It’s more than what I pay for! Attaching picture. Also, other router I had in the past, I had issues with when going into my third bedroom upstairs, for some reason there was more interference there, so my connection would time out or not reach or be very slow… but with this asus router, I have no issues at all! The connection is excellent.I read that speeds on this things can go up to 2917mb, just thinking about this is mind boggling to me. It also offers an enhanced security. Obviously this is a dual core cpu, also has an app that you can download for it. It has both usb 2.0 and 3.0, a nice led shutoff, and 4 gigabit lan 1-4.I went outside the other day and I am STILL connected to my WiFi. We are talking a good 300 feet away. And walking fine.It was simple to set up. Very simple. And I am not such an expert on these things. Just follow directions. Finally, it look very classy and very nice. Compact and doesn’t take out much space.Listen, I would recommend this to anyone who wants great speed, and reliability. I doubt they can make anything better than this.

We finally got 1GBit Fiber at our home. As many others have reported, the built-in WiFi from the Fiber Provider’s box had very poor range. My old ASUS RT-N66 had been in service for 5 years with little to no hiccups, and the signal strength covered our 2-story house without the need for additional access points.Disabled the Fiber Provider’s built-in WiFi. I went ahead and connected the RT-AC86U to the fiber box as a router, serving up DHCP on the 192.168.2.1 network for my wireless clients. Setup was simple and now I’m getting 150 Mbps throughout the house. I’ll likely open the firewall to allow management from my main wired desktop when I feel like fiddling with it more.Pro tip: use *redacted*. I can’t tell you what I use for my DNS settings, but if you Open a search you can learn more.

JMZ Command Central…….Updated…. You want and awesome Wireless router replacement???. ASUS RT AC86U. Streaming. Gaming, w/ extended range (5000′ radius), and network protection for all your wi-fi devices. Very customizable. Another awesome product from ASUS! Tested. Everything advertised and better!! Replaced an ASUS AC56U dual band (which was awesome, as well, in its time). The upgrade difference in speed, connectivity, and range was definitely a significant leap. Streaming is fantastic! No Lag or dropped streams. Picture and log-in takes moments. 10 plus devices on wi-fi. Great job (as usual) ASUS!!!

I have a 1800 square ft Cape Cod style home (1 & a half story) with a full basement. My new Asus RT-AC86U is smack in the middle of it on the first floor. There is not a room in my house, not a crevice, where I don’t get absolutely max bandwidth in speed tests, even in the basement. I also have a 2-story DETACHED garage. With all doors closed this device manages an incredible 75% of my max bandwidth in the upstairs, far side of it! By comparison, my previous router, a Pace 5268AC (AT&T) required a mesh extender in order to get a decent signal in my basement and got no signal at all in my garage. If you are not technically inclined, don’t worry about other reviews that speak of firmware updates and advanced settings. The Asus RT-AC86U is easy to setup and the software is easy to use and understand. For those of you that are, this device has all the bells and whistles and will provide the tools you need to have precise control over your network.

Update 3 (08/2019):Here I am trying to use the warranty once again now that they have the router in stock magically. NOPE. Still no luck. They started a replacement process and were supposed to ship me a new router. Instead, I got multiple emails stating that I sent them a router with water damage and that they were not going to fix it. I NEVER SENT THEM ANYTHING. How incompetent can you be to get things mixed up this badly?! I wish I were kidding. If anyone from Asus is reading this, go check my case and your mind will be blown by the mess you have made out of this simple thing: ASUS Service No=N191207669 ; Rma No=USBVKC0045——–Original review below:I should have paid closer attention to other reviews before buying this router. This is an extremely expensive router, and for the amount of money I paid, I most definitely did not expect to have the experience I am having.THE GOOD: My 5 Ghz network is excellent and very stable. That is it though.THE BAD: As others have mentioned, the 2.4 Ghz network on this router is awful. There must be something terribly wrong with the design of this router since so many people experience this issue. It first started with my router randomly dropping my devices that were connected to that network. At first I thought this was an issue with my devices since I refused to believe a router this expensive would be having these issues. Then the issue became a lot more frequent, and by then it was too late for me to return this garbage back since I’ve had it for over 2 months. Now the router won’t even try to create a 2.4 Ghz network anymore so all of my older devices that are only compatible with that frequency are deemed useless. I should mention I’m a fairly savvy person and I have tried everything I could to address this issue. I installed 4 different firmwares and none provided me stability. I tried manually selecting all possible settings combinations for that network. All to no avail. Then I gave up and decided to contact Asus and use my warranty.THE AWFUL: Their warranty service sucks! I can’t emphasize how disappointed I am. First of all it took me a long time to even figure out how to request service for this router. Then I learned that if I were to use my warranty, I’d have to pay for the shipment of the router both ways and if they decided they couldn’t reproduce the problem (which other customers said actually happened), they’d probably just send me the defective unit back. After an incredibly long discussion with one of their representatives, they said they’d ship me a replacement unit so that I could have internet at home while they service my broken router. Mind you, I had to pay the FULL MSRP PRICE FOR A NEW ROUTER plus 2-day shipping (the cheapest option they had). Now you ask… did I get a replacement router in 2 days? Obviously not! It’s been a week and they are still SEARCHING FOR A REPLACEMENT UNIT IN THEIR INVENTORY! How is that even possible?! This thing is in stock everywhere! I paid full price for a replacement unit (which, again, is definitely NOT CHEAP) and I paid for 2-day shipping. What on earth?! They said the money I paid for the replacement unit will be reimbursed once they receive my broken router, but I don’t even know when that will happen anymore. Also, by then I will have wasted a ton of money on “2-day shipments”, a ton of time and energy, and my patience. How can you charge me all of that (which in my opinion you should just do for free since my router has a common issue known to you) while not even having a replacement unit in stock? Just ridiculous.I hope someone from Asus reads this. And if not, I at least hope potential buyers do and avoid this particular router at all cost!Update 1 (12/06):I have followed-up with Asus and so far have not been given a reasonable resolution. After 9 days of me submitting my payment information for a replacement router and not getting any updates, they have confirmed that they have no stock for this router and can’t send me a replacement. I’m guessing this model is getting out of production for being so problematic .They also want me to ship my faulty router to them and pay for it myself. I’ll likely have to wait a few decades until the item is serviced and I’m not even sure it will actually get fixed given other reports and the fact that Asus is no longer stocking this item.I’m now debating if I should just throw this away and buy another router by a reputable brand, or if I should live without internet for the time it will take asus to attempt to fix mine.Update 2 (12/07):Asus doesn’t seem to be producing this router anymore and they don’t expect to have it in stock. They also refused to send me a different router as its replacement.I can’t ship my ONLY router to Asus and wait for it to get fixed indefinitely. It’s not even clear if it would get fixed anyway. So I chose to keep this partially functioning attempt-of-a-router, and replace the dead 2.4 GHz band with a network with the same name created by a $15 mini-router I had laying around. That seems a lot more stable and reliable than what this $200 gives me.Avoid anything network-related made by Asus!!

We have had this router for over a year now and it has performed very well.Features we needed: – Great speed – Web interface (not just an app for phones or tablets) – Ability to shut off wifi entirelyINTERNETWe have 200/200 internet from Frontier over fiber optics. The service is fast and reliable. The attached speed test is a typical result from a laptop connected to the 5ghz network.DEVICESThe router is placed in the center of the house in an entry closet, it easily covers our 1900sq ft home. All wireless devices that can, use the 5ghz network, and we get great coverage and speed. No dead spots, even in the backyard, frontyard, and garage. We have 2 gigabit switches we use for devices we need hardwired, one in the living room, and one in the office. Again, the wifi covers these areas great, the devices connected either don’t have wifi capabilities or I just needed a hardwire because we turn our wifi off at night.Connected devices include: 1 Smart TV, 1 NAS, 1 media/backup server, 1 desktop, 1 VOIP phone device, 1 printer, 1 streaming stick, 2 laptops, 5 phones, 3 tablets, 3 cameras, 2 cast devices, and another streaming device. We use streaming services exclusively for entertainment and never get buffering or slow downs.EXTERNAL HARD DRIVEI attached a 500GB drive to the USB 3.0 port for shared media for both local and remote access. Windows 10 computers need to enable SMB1, instructions are available via a link on the routers web interface.SETTINGSThe web interface gives a lot of options and settings. Many features we don’t currently use like dual WAN (having a second ISP as a backup), smart connect (merging wifi networks for seemless handoff), VPN (for all internet traffic or to remote into the network), and AiMesh (adding additional routers to setup a mesh network). One feature I do like to look at is the Traffic Analyzer. You can view real-time traffic usage or statistics for a day, week, or month. The statistics break down internet usage by device or app. The Android app also gives the ability to pause or schedule internet access on a per device basis.UPDATESAlthough they are not automatic, several firmware updates have been made available. Updates are something many routers never see after release and are a serious security concern. I am glad this router has been maintained by ASUS. A recent firmware update also enable compatibility with ASUS Lyra mesh devices.

Currently using this router with a fiber ONT to the home. This device has been amazing, upgrading from an older TP-Link router. This router has been rock solid now going on over 7 months without any disconnects or issues. Currently has around 20 devices connected and no noticeable slowdown on any of them. Before I had issues with too many devices if I wanted good speeds, not the case with this router. Screenshot of speed test over WiFi during peak hours. Off hours pushes closer to 700Mbs

2.4 ghz WiFi stopped working less than a year after purchase. Tech support was the standard to be expected so far, they suggested to do a factory reset. I performed the reset and it came back to life. Fast forward a few weeks later and the 2.4 channel is having issues.5 ghz works decent great however the 2.4 band is struggling. I ran two speed tests on my home network with a pc connected wirelessly approximately 36 inches from the router. The first result was done while following a fresh factory reset, using the 2.4 ghz channel. I hit speeds of about 23 mgs down and 38 up.I simply switched to the 5ghz band and ran the test again within a minute of the previous test. The second test showed results much closer to my actual network wired speeds. Here I was able to hit around 83 mgs down and 81.5 up.If I go downstairs, the problem gets much worse. On the 2.4 channel, I get about 2 mgs down, and 1 mg up. I noticed the problem as recently all my streaming apps started struggling. If you purchased through a credit card, look at if they have an extended warranty. This is going to be toast soon. Never again Asus. I used to buy a lot of your stuff, I learned my lesson.

No problem at all setting up the AC2900 behind my ATT 5268AC. Wifi performance is working well with all the devices. No more wifi drops that I was receiving in my former TP Link box. Wifi range is better for both 2.4G and 5G within my house.I’ve heard good things about this processor running a VPN server but I haven’t been able to test it out yet. I upgraded the firmware to the latest Merlin and so far no issues or problems.Looking forward to years of great service from Asus. Crossing my fingers since most of my routers would start dropping wifi after a few years of running. I’ll update the review once I perform more testing on it. So far so good.

I was getting download speeds less than half of what I was paying for, and after all the “chats”with comcast, and them sending out an engineer, they stated that it was my old router (ASUS:RT-N66R), was the cause. I am paying for 250Mb d/l, and was only getting 95Mb d/l, I decided that maybethey were right, and took the plunge on this ASUS:RT-AC86U, and I am now a happy chappy, as I am getting exactly what I am paying for, and the range is amazing, I can even get a signal in the deepest darkest corners of the basement now.

I purchased this to upgrade my AC68U as My wifi was poor in the basement. The signal from this router is better than a lot of “high power” routers out there.I tried this along with a tp link AC1900 , an Amped wireless RTA2600 router and my old Asus AC68U router. This was the winner for signal.I have added an image for comparison. It shows the average signal in an open room at 30ft.I did not include the Amped wireless as it had been returned before the comparison, but it was slightly weaker than the tp link for some reason. The AC86U signal drops a lot on the band edges and ends up being very weak on CH 1 and 11 for some reason.Hope this helps.I am currently hammering the router by copying my entire cloud drive on 2.4Ghz to make sure it will not fail as I have read some of the reviews. If it succeeds I can be more confident of long term use and will upgrade my review to 5 stars.UPDATE:Their seems to be a thermal issue. After 2 days the 2.4GHz kept randomly dropping.Changed to cooler location and everything is well again. Will keep it running and update again.

I just received the RT-AC86U router today, so this is a first impression review. I was reluctant to buy this device because about 30% of users complained of quality issues, resulting in 1 or 2 stars. For today, I’m 5-stars, and I hope I won’t have to revise it downward because of some failure in a few days or weeks or months. Fingers crossed. Here is my experience. I have used an ASUS RT-N66U for about five years, and it has worked very well — no complaints. I recently started using a VPN (NordVPN) and installed a NordVPN OpenVPN client on the router to run all my devices through a VPN pipe via the router. That worked fine, but was very slow. I have a Comcast connection, and before installing the VPN on the router my down/up speeds according to Ookla speed test were about 89 / 5.5 mbps. After installing the VPN it was more like 4 / 3 down/up. That was totally unacceptable to me. I decided to try a more modern and more powerful router, and eventually selected the RT-AC86U. Good price and good specs.Setup was pretty easy, although my first attempt didn’t work through my hard-wired connection to my desktop computer. The “WAN” LED was just red. I had to use a WiFi connection from my cell phone, and then set up the router from the Asus control panel on the cell phone. Thereafter I could connect from the desktop computer and everything worked great.I was very nervous when I ran my first Ookla speed test with the router/VPN enabled. Instead of about 4 / 3 mbps, I was thrilled to see about 86 / 5.7, which is essentially the same as the straight-through Comcast bandwidth without the VPN. So two thumbs up, and five stars for my initial impressions!

I bought this router to replace my older router that is outdated and running a lot slower. In today’s world of electronics, I have been adding more devices connected to my router, I needed something more reliable. I can tell a difference in the speed of my devices since installing this router, they have improved a good deal. I plan on adding an additional router to distribute the number of devices connected to any one router to also help out with the load. So far this router has been very good with no problems. I would recommend it for anyone looking for their first router or an upgrade to an existing router.

Paying for 400mbps and not getting it sucks. I upgraded my WiFi modem to this ASUS after the cable tech guy said my 5 year old WiFi modem was the bottleneck for speed. Well, it screams now, before I had 50-60mbps at best hitting my computers n phones. I test out at 866 Mbps 15-20 ft away in my living room now and 351 to 483 Mbps in my office 3 walls and 60 feet away. Solid connections no drop off, no lag for gaming and streaming movies there is no wait for buffering. Very pleased with the purchase.

I still love my Netgear r8000 with Tomato firmware, but I bought this for a different purpose, despite hearing all these problems with the wireless radios (I don’t use them). I installed the Merlin firmware, which I hear eliminates most problems with Asus routers, in general and has been known to have an OpenVPN version compatible with encryption hardware acceleration, which is what I bought this for. This was the cheapest option to have hardware acceleration for my VPN on the market. Most of the other options are other Asus routers with the new broadcom chips and professional level firewall appliances. I have it sit between my modem and the router that I have been using (the Netgear). I have Spectrum’s 100 down 10 up package and I get it with OpenVPN on my network with no problem. The interface is slick. No problem so far. Hopefully this will hold up with the Merlin firmware and the radios not being used.

I switched from a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 to this model due to WiFi drop-off issues with the Netgear that seem to be related to IPv6 being forced. I have no issues with ANY device now for months solid since switching to this Asus model router, and the parental control features are simple and easy to use as well. This is a good well-rounded model for just about everything from a house full of teenagers to a business working from home hosting a server.I’ve used Asus motherboards for years in my PC builds, I should have figured they’d make an awesome series of routers. This router is also capable of operating as a Mesh WiFi System, but bear in mind you’ll have to stick to other AIMesh routers to get that to work.
