How to Reset Cisco-Linksys E2000

Resetting your Cisco-Linksys E2000 is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
  2. Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
  3. You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
  4. Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.

Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.

How to Find Your IP Address

This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.

  1. Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
  2. In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
  3. When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
  4. Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

My previous router was not up to the task. This router was recommended by my ISP. It came fast, was easy to set up, and has improved our Internet experience.

    Manny Lopez – December 12, 1930

I have had this for over a year now and I have not had any issues with it. Much faster than the G router, fairly priced, and good range. It also helps for your laptop to have a good N wireless card, to get a strong signal. I have 2 laptops and testing them from across the house, one of them has a signel strength of 4 bars and the other has 2 bars. Given the price, performance, and the reliability of the E2000, I gave it 5 stars.

I bought this router last year and I have to say it is the best router I have ever purchased. Easy to install and looks real slick I like the design. Moving from NYC to Texas this bad boy still works just like the first day I took it out of the box. Cisco makes great products. Recommend this to anyone that wants to upgrade!

The item was fulfilled by Amazon but was sold by a company Comp-U-Plus Rockland. When I opened the package it was obvious that it was a refurbished unit, not a new one. The router had scratches on the top and the power cord and Ethernet cables were not tied in wire ties, they were wound around themselves. The label on the box that indicated the serial number was a sticker stuck over the original printing on the box. As an IT consultant I’ve purchase many Cisco wireless routers, so I know how they are typically packaged. It may be that Comp-U-Plus Rockland sells both new and refurbished and Amazon just shipped the wrong one. Right now if you try to buy one it says it is sold by Electronica Direct but once you add it to the cart is says it is sold by Comp-U-Plus. I’m may try to order another and see if I have better luck. I’ll update if I have more information later.**Update 07/12/201** The second one from Comp-U-Plus Rockland is definitely new. The differences: both the power cord and the Ethernet cables are tied with wire ties, no scratches and the most obvious sign is that the Ethernet ports on the router are covered with a sticker that indicate that you should run the installation CD first. I will assume that sending a refurbished model the first time was an accident.I am updating the rating to five stars because I have experience with this device and have been happy with them in the past.

Easy to setup and works great, I have had it for a few weeks and have not yet had to reset it. Doesn’t have a lot of fancy features which is perfect for people who just want a simple way to connect mobile devices to the internet. I have an approximately 1600 square foot house with 2 stories and a basement with a two car garage and I get service everywhere, there is a slight drop off in speed when I am in my garage but hardly noticeable and much faster than the 2g coverage I have at my house for my cell phone. I would definitely recommend this to a friend looking for an easy to use home router.

I am using Tomato Firmware v1.28.7501 MIPSR2Toastman-RT K26 Std Firmware. File: tomato-E2000-NVRAM60K-1.28.7501.3MIPSR2Toastman-RT-StdFrom here: […]TomatoUSB is much better than the stock firmware. No where near as advanced as ddwrt, but all I am using this for is a 5ghz AP connected to my CenturyLink Actiontec c1000a modem/router. I have dchp and all the routing stuff off on the cisco as it just acts as a bridge as my main router handles DHCP so that all my network devices are on the same network.I am using 5ghz and getting a solid 300mbps connection link while in the same room as the router. The range is’t that good, as is all 5ghz routers..the signal goes to half or less and link speed to 150 or lower in the living room, which is right on the other side of the wall.In the same room, I am pushing a steady 20-21MB’s internal lan to wifi file transfer speed in windows 8 while copying a 1gb .mkv file from my wired gigabit server to my wifi laptop. I was only getting about 12-15MB’s on stock firmware.Using Tomato allows you to overclock the router to 480mhz(stock is 354mhz)This does cause more heat so you will need to be sure it is keep in a cool place or work out some cooling mod for it. Speak of mods, it has ports on the board to add external antennas. You can find the antenna kits for $10-20 on ebay.Works great for me! I live in a large apartment complex and the 2.4ghz band is so clogged its unusable for me. I could only get maybe 1MB’s out of 2.4ghz on a good day, no matter the channel. Having 5ghz lets me use my laptop as a laptop, and not have to be plugged into a Ethernet wire all the time….do loose some speed..but I can always plug up for large file transfers. Range isn’t as good as I had hoped, but it still is very much more usable than 2.4ghz throughout my entire single floor unit.

My fathers older wireless router died so I purchased this one for him and set it up. It didn’t take more than a few minutes and everything was back online. Very easy to use and configure. Things are running faster with this router and signal strength seems better.

As a basic home-use router it should work fine. The problem I had with it is that it doesn’t support VPN, so I was unable to connect to my office remotely using our VPN. The thing also doesn’t have the greatest design It has to be laid flat and has no mounting features. Other than that it worked fine.

I purchased this router for my wife’s parents two years ago to replace a bricked Netgear router. Upon setup, the software prompts you to install Cisco Connect which is okay for novice users. However as an advanced user, I recommend that if you prefer a classic web based interface, then turn on advanced settings in the Cisco Connect program.I wanted to specifically mention my recommendation of the web based interface because shortly after setting up their router, I noticed that my brother and sister in law were experiencing IP conflicts with this router. With Cisco Connect, I attempted to find a way to simply turn on DHCP reservation (so that the router will give each device a specific IP address every time each device connects to the network) and I was not able to locate this feature within the Cisco Connect Software. However, I was able to activate advanced settings within Cisco Connect which brought me to the more user friendly web based setup (192.168.1.x). Once accessed, I easily had the E2000 assign each device a specific IP address in DHCP reservation and my family has not experienced one IP conflict yet.Other than that, this is a great router. I really like how it offers gigabit and Wireless N dual band up to 300 Mbps. It’s a shame that the current lineup of Cisco Linksys routers only offer gigabit with their “Smart W-Fi” EA series routers because in my opinion the firmware offered to the EA lineup really needs more work. Please see my review on my EA4500 with respect to that topic. So if you are looking for a reliable wireless N gigabit router, order yourself this product because it will make a great replacement router for anything that you currently has.

    Joe C. – December 3, 2013

This router replaced my old trusty WRT54G, which was performing adequately, but just didn’t have the speed or range. The E2000, now superceded by newer models has performed well over the past 18 months. I read many review, including those that trashed this model. Thank goodness I went with the “crowd’s” opinion and not the outliers on the downside. I am not a power user, and really haven’t touched the thing since set up.It just works. I had no setup problems, and the range is an improvement on the predecessor unit. I live in a modestly sized circa 1920’s house with thick plaster lath walls. The router is on the second floor and I get good coverage on the first floor. The only place with a weak signal is a room separated by a brick wall. All in all, I wanted to add my positive experience to the list, to insure that the aggregate of reviews accurately reflect the quality of the product.

So upgraded the home network to ‘n’ , which means faster wifi and chose this router . I have own different brands of router before but I do like linkysys because the signal strength is usually good and the web configuration tool is quite easy to navigate .I do like the access restrictions feature ( by device) so i can allow access of iPods , iPhones , PCs etc as when it makes sense for my kids on a school night or the weekend , and if they are naughty …. well I have the power to help them be nice again :-).

This is a great router despite the score I given. It lasted only for 3 years, before the blinking blue light, but in those 3 years, it worked great. I had signal all over the place, even outside. If it had lasted one more year or 2 more years then maybe I would of given it 5 stars, but yeah, RIP e2000, you did me wonders.

Excellent router, poor quality power supply.I’ve had this router for 4 years now, and it works great. I have a pretty big house, and I can get a good signal all over it. I have a Roku at the opposite end of the house, and on a different floor, and I get a great signal.I give only 4 stars, though, because last night I turned off everything in the office to make some changes, and left it off all night. This morning when I turned it back on, no internet. The Linksys router power light was doing a fast flicker, and wouldn’t boot. I bypassed it, and hooked directly into the cable modem, and searched google for a solution – the manual was no help. I got onto a Linksys forum, and quite a few others had this problem. They turned it off and on, and it stopped working. Turns out it was the POWER SUPPLY (wall transformer) that went bad. Fortunately I had a 12V supply with the same plug, and it lit right up. Thank you china for more junk quality.

It’s an old model that performs Ok.I’d like to suggest a newer router, but I have yet to locate one that lives up to the manufacturers’ performance claims.Surely some manufacturer can produce a high performance, reliable wireless router that meets consumers’ expectations.

I’ve had this router for a long time (7 years?). It was very good for the first 2 years or so. After that we really started connecting a lot more devices (5-10) and it started having minor issues. I’m pretty tech savvy and didn’t mind resetting it every couple of weeks, but my network Homegroup was never reliable after that no matter what I did. Probably twice a year it would disconnect entirely and i’d have to troubleshoot the issues. Last week devices started disconnecting from the network and i couldn’t get most of them to reconnect. This router seemed to be failing so I replaced it, which solved the problem. overall it was a good router, but not maintenance-free and I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone that isn’t relatively tech savvy.I want to give it 4 stars, but its just so out dated now that I don’t want to set the expectation that this will compete with the other products that are out there today.

The Linksys E2000 was easy to configure, and I got online in just a few minutes. This is my fifth Linksys and they have always performed well for me. Friends are able to quickly access the Internet when they come over.

Be careful when buying this router. I received mine used and thought it would be an easy one to set up. Turns out that there are many things that can go wrong with initializing this hub that are not in any manual or guide. It took me almost an hour of sifting through message boards in order to find any solution which could help get this thing set up. Turns out that it will not broadcast a signal unless you give it a mac address registered by your modem or if the current network is unsecured (An unsecured network is set up by default). Mind you that I am a software developer who has set up many routers in the past and can say that this one gave me the most trouble out of any of them.Once you get the router set up though, everything is perfectly fine. Speeds are reasonable and there is little issue when it comes to accessing the network settings to change passwords or SSIDs.I would say that if you are not well versed in networking or computer systems in general, try to find a router that is more plug-and-play.

This has been a pretty good bit of technology. I purchased it 6 years ago. This morning after a power outage it didn’t work. It’s worked fine after other power outages. So why 5 stars for something that stopped working? 1. Linksys customer support. This was my second or third Linksys router. Customer support, even out of warranty has always been great, and the representatives I’ve spoken to have not only been helpful, they’ve been terrific people. (If I was traveling in India and could visit either the Linksys call center or the Taj Mahal…Of course. But I’d hesitate.) 2. It’s been very reliable. and 3. I bought a new WiFi router today. All the recommendations…what to do? I bought a Linksys: based on my past experience, and how good the customer support was. I want to support that.

Worked reliably for many years. Like all consumer routers, requires an occasional reboot. Otherwise, near perfect. Love the concealed antenna.

This has been my primary wireless router for over a decade, and the only issue I’ve encountered was with the power cord, which died a month ago. (The cord is pretty standard, and I just stole one from an old modem.) The router itself is bulletproof though. I just now started using it in a 2-story house for the first time, and figured I would need to upgrade, but was completely wrong. All my devices get a great signal, even from the neighbor’s across the street.

I had a few lousy routers in the last ten years (as many of you have), thankfully those days are long gone. Let me tell you this E2000 router is a Joy to Own!I have had this E2000 for 2 years, and to me it looks like a flying saucer (Take me to your leader). Simple to set up, easy to change network name & password, easy acess to it’s adjustable wireless settings, plus a choice of 2 broadcast frequencies (but not simultaniously).I get a good strong signal all over my condo with no dropouts or disconnect whatsoever. I can even receive signal through a cement floor below in my basement, and out on my patio. Currently the E2000 is running 2 wireless laptops and a Sony “My Dash”, plus the wired portion is running a Dish DVR (for On-Demand Stream), A Blue Ray player with internet access, and another wired laptop. I have also run Netflix. It keeps up with them all!Recently I started to have an issue with “Lag” appearing to be the firewall. I felt the problem was due to a nasty trojan I picked up a few months ago. I search around and found some were flashing the E2000 to Tomato & DD-WRT since the unit is compatable with these programs. However I chose keep it stock and flashed it again with the original E2000 firmware and replaced the computer’s wireless driver. Guess what, that took care of all the “Lag” problems, and the E2000 runs like new again! So if you can get a fair price, the E2000 is One Great Router!

Works great for me. I have two computers (one right next to the router, and a laptop that can be anywhere in the house), a tv/bluray player, and a Wii in the basement that talk to this router. In the time I’ve owned it I only had to reboot/reset it once, otherwise it works very reliably. I’d recommend it to anyone.

Replaced a G band router with the Cisco E2000 and have noticed better speeds with all devices. Seems that when family comes over everyone has some sort of device they want to hook up with. With this unit you can give them the guest password and not worry about your network. Can also set limit on number of hook ups.Was very easy to install.

This router was very easy to set up and to use with multiple devices. I received this product while I was deployed and used it for a wireless network for my squad section. It worked well with laptops, cell phones, and gaming consoles. Seven people used connected to it at one time and it did not slow down or drop connection.
