How to Reset Cisco-Linksys E4200

Resetting your Cisco-Linksys E4200 is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
  2. Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
  3. You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
  4. Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.

Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.

How to Find Your IP Address

This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.

  1. Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
  2. In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
  3. When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
  4. Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

Great router. I’ve had no issues with it. Runs like a champ and does all that it claims to do. I’ve no problem recommending it.

Bought it in June 2011 and now (Dec 2014) it stopped transmitting wirelessly and had to replace it. Only 3.5 years for a router? Their quality has really dropped. Replaced it with an Asus AC2400 RT-AC87U.

works great out of the box. I wanted to buy this to upgrade firmware to Tomato but didn’t want to spend over 200 bucks and so bought it as a refurbished router. One thing i don’t like about this is the ‘serial number’ at the bottom of this router has been removed!!! whats up with that!! Took me a while to figure out its version and found out that this is v2. so, i can’t install tomato on this 🙁 very disappointed but the router as it is, is pretty decent and i am able to keep track of the devices attached to my network. I was also able to remove ‘guest’ access and limit the number of devices connected to my network. the admin utility is pretty neat especially when connected via a browser. The executable that got installed was pretty much useless for me as it couldn’t identity my router! something was not right with that. I use this wth my motorola surfboard SB16141 and so far its been doing great. have had this just about over a week and will update 6 months from now.

I’ve had one of these routers for awhile now and while I have always been impressed with its performance, I’ve recently had reason to be astonished by this product. I just moved from a 1400 sq ft single level house to a 2700 sq ft split level with a finished basement. I was assuming that I’d need to get at least one other access point and run cables to get WiFi coverage in some of the farther rooms. As I’ve said, I was astonished to find that with the router installed near the center of the house on the main level I get FULL BARS on my WiFi signal meter in all rooms on every floor! Even standing out in the street next to the mailbox I get acceptable signal on my android phone. Other than Cisco remotely upgrading my firmware without my permission, I’ve never had a problem with this product. I highly recommend it and can’t imagine a better router for home / SOHO use.

They have introduced a new linksys firmware with this product which has dumbed down the web interface for admin control. Personally I HIGHLY prefer the old panel. Product works well, but does require a restart about 1 time per week to maintain speeds. Nice continual uptime.

    Robin Atler – January 15, 2015

Nice router but has one problem – it occasionally loses track of things and my computer won’t properly connect to other wireless devices in the house. I then have to reboot this router and can only accomplish that by turning the unit off (for maybe 10 minutes because it will hold it’s configuration data for quite a while after the power is removed) and back on. This is painful. Cisco should fix this problem but these things are pretty cheap and new ones are coming out all the time so it seems I’m pretty much left with this problem. I like Cisco and have worked with their products in the commercial and home worlds; this just isn’t their very best effort but it isn’t terrible either. Good range in my ranch-style home, the wireless connectivity hits all the rooms in the house, including the basement and the deck.

    Missoula woodworker – January 29, 2015

I remain a bit disappointed by its power. We have our TiVo along with a Visioneer streaming receiver in a bedroom that sits only about twenty to thirty feet from the router. Admittedly, that means that three walls separate the router from our other equipment, still I expected to have few problems receiving a satisfactory signal, given that distance. We are, therefore, somewhat unhappy when our streaming broadcasts lose the signal long enough to interrupt our shows. Usually, the situation corrects itself within a few seconds, and in fairness, we don’t see this happen often, but that seems to make the interruption that much more annoying when it occurs. Also, Cisco now insists that manual setup is virtually impossible unless one is a guru and able to hack their plan in some way. It seems that they insist on going through their interface, including password protection, to even start. Are you as tired of remembering the various passwords as I am? Maybe I’m not sophisticated enough, but since I’m accessing the router from a computer that is attached with a cable to the router, shouldn’t I be able to do so without a separate password entry? Once one logs in, however, it is possible to manually adjust many of the router’s features and a guest account can be toggled with its own password, a nice feature.

I bought this in 2012 and although I’ve had to reboot it a couple of times I have never had a problem with it. It is connected to our modem on the second floor. When my internet connectivity diminished on the main floor of the house I read reviews and troubleshooting and read that it would be helpful to not place it next to other electronics. I had it next to my printer and since I moved it away from the printer the connectivity has been fine.

This is a fantastic router. The spec’s may be a bit dated compared to more modern routers with AC and such. But what makes this router a gem that can outperform and outfeature routers costing many times more is the ability to run custom firmware. Look at DD-WRT and Tomato for example. Be warned though that if you do not install this correctly you can brick this router. The router supports 3X3 streams on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz and will use either 20mhz or 40mhz of bandwidth. Running DD-WRT you can also purchase a second one of these to extend your range. You can use the 5ghz radio to set up the second one as a WDS and place it elsewhere in your house as a second access point without running additional wires. I would recommend running ethernet cable when possible. This will cut back on latency and also allow you to place the router further and have less overlap. Also, if you plan on modifying your firmware you will NEED a V1 router! The later E4200’s use a Marvell chipset which is not capable of running aftermarket firmware.

I’ve acquired three of these secondhand and have installed the free Tomato software (Toastman build) to run on all of them. There have been absolutely no problems the past nine months (oldest running router), and the systems have been stable and reliable running OpenVPN, Samba, and file servers. High marks for this product and configuration.

Mostly ReliableWe bought this to handle wifi in our house, and it has been a pretty solid unit. There have been a few times where we’ve had to call in for customer support for issues that we couldn’t handle ourselves. The added expense of customer support was unforeseen though, and buyers should be aware that for faulty issues, they’ll have to pay to get them resolved.Originally, I wrote this review for Cisco-Linksys at their request, but they rejected it. Probably they don’t want buyers to know that support will only occur if you pay their fees. The additional cost for support isn’t outrageous, but it’s certainly a revenue generating stream. Almost all issues we’ve had were resolved within ten minutes on the phone.

I purchased this router to use a VPN pass through feature. After some hiccups at first I was able to configure and it is running smoothly. There is a ton of functionality on this router that allows you to completely control your network. If you are looking for the ability to control your network and use VPN services this is an excellent router worth the money. The signal strength is excellent. Overall I am very satisfied.

It worked perfectly in first year. But it start making trouble. The connections are totally broken. No signal at all. The power icon on font is light but the cable indicators are off and not network connection at all. It drives me mad when I starting an important net meeting. As a fix, I have to power it off for 0.5+ hour and try again. It may work if I am lucky. I saw a few posts on YouTube talk about exact some problem. One video said “put it into refrigerator for 5 minutes and it will work”. it was so funny.

Really good, solid router. It was my router for years without any issues. I replaced it’s routing function with a pfSense box, simply for the additional power pfSense provides me, but for a consumer router this is plenty powerful. It’s still serving me to this day as a WAP.

I typically only like to review things on Amazon after I’ve had them awhile to truly give them my experience with the product. I have been a fan of Linksys over the years and have bought many of their products. I also know that Cisco makes quality stuff. Based on this and the reviews, I purchased this model in 2011, and now it is 2017. I still have it and it is still working great for my entire house. I’ve moved 3 times since this was purchased, and it has worked great throughout the house. There may be better options (faster, more coverage area) out now since technology is always evolving — I don’t know–, but this has been a rock solid unit for my money and would recommend to anyone looking for a good router.

I just upgraded to a used E4200/V2 for which I paid $20, replacing an E1500 for which I paid $17 about 4 years ago. It’s a HUGE improvement in range and, at long ranges, speed. With the old E1500 router downstairs in the family room, reception in the main-floor kitchen was so-so and reception out on the back deck was barely there in mornings and mostly gone by afternoon. During the afternoon I could sometimes get a little reception by reconnecting every few minutes. But with this E4200/V2, wow! Reception both in the kitchen and out on the deck is snappy! A little less so in the afternoon out on the deck but still very good. If I had known what a huge improvement this would be, I would have paid more for a E4200/V2 a couple years ago.Linksys wifi router setup is super easy. I just ran the set up CD, connected the router when prompted, entered the same router name and password as I had for the E1500, and it did all the rest. All my devices were able to continue using it without even reconnecting.

While I didn’t buy my E4200 from Amazon (I got it at a garage sale for $1.00) I wanted to say that this is one of the best routers I have ever had. Extremely easy to set up. As soon as I got it home I searched the Linksys site for documentation, and firmware update which I found and downloaded quite easily. Installation of the firmware was very easy. I also downloaded the latest version of Cisco Connect. The only problems I have had was in trying to understand how to setup a NAS. I did finally get it working but never did get all the bugs worked out and when it did work the drive was very slow so I finally gave up I am certain that if I were to have a greater need for a NAS I would spend more time learning the tricks but that is not what I got the the router for. If I can figure out how to physically position my printer such that I can set it up as a network printer I may do that. This router has made my Internet much more responsive than ever (I was using a Cisco Linksys M10 router before)
