Netgear Nighthawk C7100V Compatibility
The Netgear C7100V has been certified to work with Comcast Xfinity and works on most Comcast triple-play plans. Even though this device has been tested extensively with Comcast, we highly recommend calling your provider before ordering to ensure this model works in your area and will be a good fit for your service plan.
Netgear C7100V Speeds
The C7100V features 24×8 channel bonding which delivers wired download speeds up to 960 Mbps. Even though this seems close to what would be required for Gigabit plans with Comcast & other providers, we don’t recommend this model for Gigabit customers.
This modem also features dual-band built-in wireless, which supports a combined download speed up to 1900 Mbps.

How to Activate Netgear C7100V
Activating your Netgear C7100V is the first step you need to take after unboxing your new modem. It’s a fairly simple process, and we recommend setting aside about an hour of your time to ensure you’re able to complete the whole activation.
- Plug in your new modem the same as the one it’s replacing. Make sure power cable is plugged in and coaxial cable is screwed in on the back as well. It’s recommended to do this and then wait an hour before calling your provider, if possible, so that your modem can download whatever firmware is needed for the activation.
- Next, call your provider and let them know that you’re doing an activation with a self-install of your new modem. They’ll ask you for a few of the numbers on the bottom of the unit and then proceed to get your modem added to your account and service plan.
- The call will end after the representative verifies with you that you have an internet connection. You can test this for yourself simply by visiting a few websites.
Your modem is now activated!
How to Reset Netgear C7100V
Resetting your Netgear C7100V is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:
- Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
- Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
- You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
- Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.
Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.
How to Find Your IP Address
This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.
- Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
- In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
- When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
- Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

Got my new netgear modem router and followed the easy instructions to get it hooked up. I have Comcast and it hooked up and activated right away but I still had to call Comcast to register it with them and deregister theirs. After that was done, it was all set, just had to reconnect my phone, tablet, laptop, smart tv’s and Alexa but it went just fine. Speed is fast and all works perfectly. Why didn’t I do this a long time ago??? I am retired and try to stay on top of the tech in our home but this was no problem if you have some basic knowledge and follow the directions.

Comcast notified me my old gateway was outdated and a new unit was required for upgraded speeds in my area. I was a little put off to see they had raised my rental fee slightly and using their unit I seemed to have some coverage issues in the house. Decided to purchase my own unit.
Super simple swap out! Pretty much plug and play. It even registered itself w/ Comcast and showed up within minutes on my online account / equipment list, no tech support calls required! That’s a huge plus in my book. Now I’m getting much better speeds and coverage through out my house.

After repeated nagging by Comcast telling us that our current router was not as fast as the service we had, we finally ordered this NETGEAR AC1900 for Internet and Voice services. Setup was relatively straight forward…except after having you change the admin password, they used a different name for admin within the setup! We have our desktop Mac running on WiFi so couldn’t use it to do the setup. Our work around was to tether our iPad to our iPhone and use the iPad for setup. Worked just fine. Up and running for 24+ hours and this isn’t the unit that ‘too hot’ is referring to in the reviews. Warm but not hot. Speed test was interesting! 2.4 GHz channel is similar to our previous Arris Surfboard. However the 5GHz channel had download speeds well over two times the speed of the Arris. These speeds measured on an iPhone 6 using Ookla app.

When FIOS increased my bill by 30% last month, I switched to Xfinity and bought the AC 1900 C7100V Nighthawk modem/router from Netgear. This is one of only 3 modems on the market that are compatible with Xfinity Voice service and from both specs and reviews, this looked like the top choice. So far, so good after 1 week and no regrets.
The Good:
1. Installation was a breeze.
2. Xfinity Voice works with no issues
3. I have a 3000 Sq. Ft. house and internet coverage has been good.
4. No sign of heat issues that some others have reported.
The Not so Good
1. I have (up to) 250 MBS Xfinity Blast internet service but I’m only seeing 35-50 MBS download speeds. It’s too soon to say that it’s only the modem, so I’ll be talking to support.
2. I set up the modem in the bedroom and the lights on the front of the unit are pretty bright at night. I had to create a mask for the front panel to keep the light down.

I purchased the Netgear 7100v especially to get rid of my Comcast phone modem which was costing me $10.00 per month. The Netgear 7100v is on the Comcast approved list of modems for internet/phone service. Prior to arriving, I viewed a couple of YouTube videos on installation. When the modem arrived, I plugged in the cable and telephone cord and almost immediately, a screen popped up on my TV indicating my new modem. I only had to answer a couple of questions set my password and done! the modem came on in about 2 minutes including internet and phone service.
I had this modem on the same cable as my HD TV using a splitter. After a couple of days, the system went down. I reset everything and it came back on. This happened two more times before I called for a Comcast Tech. Turns out that my old cable from the street is on it’s last leg and will be replaced by Comcast. Apparently, these newer modems are more band width specific and my cable just wasn’t handling the load. The tech got me running again by getting rid of a couple of splitters I didn’t need and scheduled a street to home cable replacement. System has been running for 2 weeks solid at this point.
The modem has excellent range even though the antennas are built in internally. This modem is made for large home. The modem is fast. I get 100 mbs hooked direct with cat5 cable and 51 mbs over the wireless. I might get a bit more after the new cable is installed, but this is approaching what I’m paying for from Comcast. The new modem/wireless router is 15 mbs faster than my old internet modem and it was a 600 mbs system. The Netgear 7100v is 1 gig.
All in all, I’m very happy with the Netgeat 7100v and I would recommend it to anyone who has Comcast internet and voice.

NETGEAR AC1900 reliability questionable after a week of usage. Installation was easy except required to call Comcast to activate. After over 30 minutes, was transferred to another support level and it took over an hour. In sum, it took over two hours to setup. The reason for my feedback. There was at least two internet disconnection during the first week that was fixed by unplugging for 20-30 seconds. However, on the 9th day the internet disconnections started over three and half hours. Attempted at least nine reboots (unplugged power cord for 20-30 seconds, connected power cord directly to outlet instead of power strip, restart modem via Comcast website diagnostic tool, checked hardware connections) because the internet connection didn’t last more than 10-20 minutes at a time before the sign of death (all the lights turned off except the power solid red light). Decided to send the NETGEAR AC1900 back for a refund since it has likely the modem instead of the internet connection via Comcast and the additional time to talk and effort with Comcast and or NETGEAR support. Decided to rent from Comcast their ARRIS modem and router as a stop gap. Next, ordered the ARRIS SVG2482AC and self-installed in less than an hour and is now working as expected. Will now monitor for reliability (internet connection and disconnection).

The NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 (C7100V) is the perfect replacement for out Comcast/Xfinity Gateway modem/router. We stream all our TV viewing (Directv Now), and have found the Nighthawk to provide a stable and strong wifi signal. We’re getting between 70 and 80 mbps down according to the speed tests we’ve tried. This is, of course, wifi speed not wired ethernet. I find that our viewing experience is better than on Comcast’s equipment. We’re also running two iPhones and two Macbook Pros. We have a better streaming experience for live TV when we put our Apple TV on 5G and keep our computers and phones on 2.5G. Highly recommended for those who want better streaming while getting rid of rental fees.

Very Important. This NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi Cable Modem Router with Telephone Jack (24×8) AC1900 DOCSIS 3.0 says it’s Gigabit verified by XFINITY but I just spent two days with Xfinity Techs and IT IS NOT. If you have upgraded to Xfinity’s Gigabit Internet service you will need a MODEM with DOCSIS 3.1. OTHERWISE it will not work. And if you have triple play with Voice, you will need to have a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with voice modem. There aren’t too many products available right now as Gigabit internet for home use is so new. You may not be able to find a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with wireless router and voice combined into a single product. So be prepared to get a DOCSIS 3.1 Cable modem with phone as one piece of gear. And a DOCSIS 3.1 Wireless router as a second.
The sales people at Xfinity are not even aware at this point that when they upgrade you to Gigabit that you’ll need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Of course you can pay the $11 per month from Comcast and they have their Xfi modem router that works great. (I’m using it now for 1 month as I wait for my new modem and wireless router to be delivered.)
I hope this helps. Good Luck!

My initial goal was to replace the gateway we’ve been renting from Comcast in order to attach USB drives to the router to use as over the air backup drives for our Macs. This router was listed on the Comcast site as being compatible (voice, internet, TV) with our service. Netgear advertises it as having mappable USB ports and parental controls.
The reality is that the ReadyShare drives (USB ports) are viewable by Macs, but NOT by Time Machine on Macs. Looks like I need to purchase NAS devices for a backup solution.
This gateway is NOT compatible with Comcast’s Xfi Parental Controls. Fine, I’ll use the ones that Netgear provides. Well, they no longer provide parental controls, but make you use the Disney Circle app. Unfortunately, the Disney Circle app does not provide the features I want without a $5 per month subscription. The following items are only available with the premium subscription: Time Limits, Bedtime, Offtime, Rewards, Usage.
We have not had the opportunity to test whether or not this device is more robust than the one we were renting. In theory our Internet speeds should be faster and better able to support multiple devices streaming content, video conferencing, etc. We will see.

I should have bought this years ago. 24 wireless devices on network including 2 cameras and still have 100+ mbps download speeds. Increased range and ability to penetrate FL hurricane rated cement walls without extender. Comprehensive dashboard and tons of setting choices. If you have original Xfinity gateway with multiple devices you probably have to reboot daily. Say goodbye to constant restarts as well as monthly rental fee. Also, startup takes about 1/5 the time if you do need to.

This Modem WiFi Router works well. Easy installation and we are not tech-savvy people. It was quite affordable when we purchased it April, 2019. Price has since increased $50. Waited this long to review to ensure its trustworthiness. Much better to own the router than pay a monthly “rental” fee. Recommend this NETGEAR product NOT THE BATTERY THAT IS RECOMMENDED under “often bought together” the: Netgear PB022-100NAS Rechargeable Battery for Nighthawk Cable Modem Router. The battery died is NOT rechargeable as advertised; it died. We’re not sure when it died but apparently — from other reviews — it doesn’t last long anyway. Unclear how NETGEAR advertises battery as “rechargeable” when it clearly is not. How did we realize it died? We had a power outage last month and our router dropped. We were in the middle of a big project!! LOL Better late than never, huh?
