How to Reset Netgear R6250
Resetting your Netgear R6250 is one of the easiest ways to correct almost all common technical issues that you may experience over the life of your modem. It’s a super handy tool to have in your troubleshooting repertoire and can save you hours on the phone with your provider. Here’s how it’s done:
- Plug your modem in to the power supply and wait 2 minutes for it to boot up fully. You’ll know it’s booted fully when the wireless lights come on.
- Locate the reset button on the back of the modem. It’ll be on the same side where all the ports are located. Generally reset buttons on this kind of device will just be a tiny hole that may or may not be labeled.
- You’ll need a flattened paperclip or pen cartridge to do this next part. Press down and hold the reset button for 30 seconds with your modem still plugged in. You should feel a small dull click when you press in the reset button with your paperclip.
- Now wait a few minutes for your modem to reset and reboot itself. You’ll know it’s finished and ready to use when the WiFi lights come back on.
Tip: Still not resetting? Try just holding down for 15 or 20 seconds instead of the full 30. Some firmware versions differ on the number of seconds needed for a reset.
How to Find Your IP Address
This method works on Windows computers and does not require any software to be downloaded. You’ll be using command prompt to find the internal IP address so you can log into your WiFi router or modem router’s settings panel.
- Click the start menu in the bottom left of your screen.
- In the search bar in your start menu, type in “cmd.exe” and then click on that program when it appears in the search.
- When the program opens, you’ll see a black window on your screen with white text.
- Type into the program “ipconfig“, then hit Enter. Your window should look like the one shown below. The IP address circled below shows where your internal IP address will be on your command prompt window. Now you can move on to accessing your modem or modem router’s settings admin panel.

42 months and still running strong. I only reboot after installing updates. Last time I investigated a potential, I found a corroded cable connector between cable modem and the world to be the culprit. I am getting close to update this poor little router or install a secondary access point. 10 heavy use devices seems to be the max that it handles well. You would be surprised how many devices are actually connected to your router.

Pros:Good Wi-Fi range and connectivityCons:Genie app could be betterPurchased this unit after my 2-year old Netgear N600 router died. I live in a rural area and do not have access to cable so Internet is provided by a WISP. Typical download speed on my connection is limited to around 25 Mbps – fast enough for video streaming and most on-line gaming but not “lightning fast”. Because of this, a higher speed routers are of little benefit. I opted to move up to the AC1600 mainly for increased range and also hoped for improved build quality and durability (over the N600).Set-up of the new router was fast and simple. I also installed the Genie app and it connected immediately to the router. Range on the router is very good. It is installed in my basement and still covers the whole house and nearby areas outside the home – patio and driveway, etc.The Genie app was my primary reason for sticking with a Netgear router. When it worked on my old N600 router, the Genie app allowed the user to see a visual Network map that showed all connected devices. Additionally, an access control feature allowed any device to be blocked / unblocked at the push of a button in the app. A very useful feature for things like keeping kids off the Web when they should be doing homework. Unfortunately, with the AC1600, I found that the Genie app has been changed and no longer offers simple point / click access for device control. Device control now requires a more cumbersome set-up and configuration using MAC addresses for each device. Potentially useful but not convenient – especially for my wife who serves as the home Internet monitor when I’m traveling. To double-check the Genie features, I contacted Netgear. The Tech Support person confirmed that access control from the device map is not available in the AC1600 and the MAC address set-up and manual configuration is required to use access control. While trying to walk me through the MAC set-up, the tech had me change a setting which resulted in all of the devices being kicked off Wi-Fi. At that point, she suggested that I do a full (factory) reset of the router. I declined and reversed the setting using an Ethernet connection to the router. This restored Wi-Fi but did not address the access control issue.Tech Support did say that the point / click access control is available in the more expensive Nighthawk (eg: Model 6700, 6900, 7000, etc.) router line. Those routers offer even higher speed and bandwidth capability which is no benefit to me due to available speed from my ISP and not worth the premium price. Based on this, I returned the AC1600 and purchased a Linksys (AC 1200+) router. The Linksys was less expensive, set-up was simple and the Linksys Smart Wi-fi app has brought back simple point and click control for blocking and unblocking access to the router.
