This modem was recommended by AT&T when my other modem stopped working. But I did not want to pay the $99 for the item. I found this one on Amazon for a lower price and it was scheduled to arrive sooner than one I almost ordered from AT&T. The item actually arrived earlier than expected. The only drawback was the fact that there were no instructions included with the device, especially not on how to set up the wireless. This meant I had to search online for the instructions and hope that I was doing it right. But I have been pleased with the ability to access the internet from the connected laptop and from various wireless devices.

The att tech and I tried for an hour to get the modem to sinc up but nothing we tried worked.

I’ve just spent 2 days trying to make one of these work to replace a fried decade-old SpeedStream 5861, and have been amazed at the ways it has failed to fit that role.AT&T makes it seem like this is their most sophisticated DSL gateway, but it actually offers very little flexibility and much of what can be changed from the default setup does not actually work. For example, it can only be told to use a different IP range for the LAN side by changing the DHCP configuration, but when you do that it sends invalid DHCP replies. Completing that breakage: DHCP cannot simply be turned off. The Wi-Fi works in its default config, but I found that any changes to the network name, passphrase, or channel config rendered it broken: clients could get a basic link, but never got an authentication exchange started with the gateway. If you have one of the AT&T “Deluxe S” accounts with multiple static IP’s, you have to disable the gateway’s routing, NAT, and Firewall functions entirely and use it in bridge mode, because it doesn’t let you set up any sort of NAT for inbound rtraffic to anything other than the primary IP.Making it all worse, there is no manual for the device, nothing more than the “Quick Start” guide and video equivalents on AT&T’s website, and the manufacturer offers literally nothing in the way of docs or suppoort other than links to the ISP’s through whom they sell their devices. A thorough network probing of the device and examination of the HTML/JavaScript source of the web GUI has given me no hints of any way to get to a more complete management interface. AT&T tech support will talk to you about this device (since it is theirs) but are neither very supportive or nor technical in their scripts. They had no clues about how to make the gateway work for my environment (an existing network using 5 external static IP’s from AT&T) but thankfully the guy I spoke to didn’t take too long to get to the point of advising me to swap it for an alternative device. (I won’t name that device here, since I don’t yet know whether it will be any good)

It was a very easy set up and it works great. I have not had any issues. Would purchase again.

I had AT&T DSL service for sometime now when it 1st came out it was locking up my computer & so I discontinued it. Dial up was coming more and more of a problem so I call AT&T again they recommended I go with pro package with a FREE 2Wire modem so Ok I did got it Thank giving week 2005 and it work so far so good the original modem 2wire lasted a long time but it burn out so off to AT&T store got new one for $99 + tax OK go home setup using their tech support people only to find out I can get them here or ebay for whole lot less which I did. Last Friday 09-13 my connections stopped. Call AT&T & they said it was modem 2 yrs old that was not working duh really 🙁 OK Go to box store wanting a different brand. Of course they say it will not work hum Ok why are you selling them then ding dong? 🙁 🙁 So I get another 2wire spent 2+ hrs trying to get it to work finally after the 10th time it works AT&T had my passwords mess up 🙁 So now I am thinking there is nothing wrong with the other modem. I go to local AT&T store salesman is trying to sell me everything under the book which ok but I still want to have modem tested. Sure enough it was power adapter that burned out. They sell me a new one for $10.00 🙂 🙂 🙂 case solved. But I am still going to change modems once I find out which one is the best.

Got this in quickly with no problems. Had everything we needed and has worked great with our ATT high speed internet.

This gateway was half the price of the same item in ATT stores and although listed as used, was in perfect condition – just like new! The only issue I had was when I registered it, it keep defaulting to the U-Verse site. I checked the att website for the proper dsl registration website, switched to it, and registered the gateway. That was it! Works perfectly. Occasionally resets itself, but the one I purchased from ATT did the same thing, as did 2 other gateways I tried. It takes less than a minute and then it’s back. The instructions are simple (they all work pretty much the same way) and I needed no tech support. I don’t know why this gateway received only moderate ratings – this was the 3rd gateway I purchased as a replacement for my original 2Wire and it works better than the other ones which I originally paid $107 and $119 for. I think it’s an excellent product! I only use a wireless network and I burn out these gateways every 2-3 years. When I need a new one, I’ll be sure to check with this retailer. The Pace is also small which is great because I have a small desk! The only thing the more expensive ones had that this one doesn’t is a USB port, which I don’t use anyway. I’ve already recommended this item and the retailer to 2 of my friends as ATT gateways always burn out after a couple of years.

Very pleased with this modem, priced them at the stores almost double wut I paid. ..saved me a monthly fee to use AT&T modem

I was having a lot of trouble with the router AT&T sold me, a Netgear. Internet dropped 3-4 times a day, half the time my cell phone would not connect.I use IP cameras and they would disconnect a couple of times a day and I would have to restart the router to get them on line. I went to Best Buy, cheaper there, and bought this. So far it is working great. My cell phone connects as soon as I turn it on and the IP cameras stay on line. Very easy to setup.

My 11 year old 2Wire DSL modem/router went out after a decade of flawless service. I got this replacement unit today from ATT. I opened the box, connected the lines to my computer and plugged it in, and the unit connects directly to ATT webpage and I just followed the online step-by-step instructions. And within 15 minutes I was able to surf the internet and reset all my wireless devices. I never expected it to be this easy. The speed is comparable to my rated DSL performance. On Ookla Speedtest I got 5.03 Mps download and 0.66 Mps upload. I am just happy that I can get back online again.

Thanks for the great modem. So far, so good!

returned it.

Had to call AT&T support to get it set – turns out I needed to reset the box. Unit looked brand new and works fine.
Peggie Little –
I got exactly what I ordered. Would recommend to a friend.thank you
Phyllis D. Jones –
Haven’t used it as of yet. Bought this one to replace another AT&T box. AT&T came out and discovered it wasn’t the box, but lines messed up on the poles. Gave 5 stars because it arrived on time and it did power up when plugged in. Didn’t want to risk switching boxes just when they worked on poles for hours to fix it. Well use the Pace box when the other one goes out.

Works but I bought the wrong product. Still not a bad review.
R. K. Griffin –
Junk! I bought mine through AT&T. This thing is next to worthless. Mine freezes up at least every other day. I have had it for two months, and still can’t get it to allow my Directv Genie to connect to the internet. What is worse, is that AT&T has no real support for this thing, and I have not found the company that makes this thing of any help either. AT&T blames the problems on Directv, and vice versa. Everything worked just fine on my old Linksys router, and old modem, but the modem started to flake out, and being the fool that I am, I thought getting a new combo unit would be the way to go. My advise is to take a pass on this junk.
Redacted Transcript –
Can’t comment on any ATT issues. I have a Pace DSL modem supplied by my Internet Company ( http://www.sonic.net) and it works perfectly. I have it installed in 2nd story and I use Wi-Fi to connect my office computer 200+ feet away, in another building, with perfect results and good signal to a Net Gear Wi-Fi dongle on a short cable. My tablet with built in antenna wont work this far away, but in the house it’s fine.Wife’s older mac is happy with a tiny usb Wi-Fi dongle in the house. If your phone line is noisy or intermittent you cannot expect any modem to work !So don’t be dumb about that. Only problems I have had were due to noisy line, and poor connections at my outside phone service box.

I only used this for about a week. It kept dropping out and rebooting.

Crap device but needed if you need an AT&T U-verse replacement modem/router. I would not buy it for anything else. Its about as bad as it gets.1. Web interface constantly freezes. And not just on mine. Tech support stated that it happens on all of them.2. No bridge mode. No pass-through mode. We are lucky that we got DMZ which is NATed. Made for dummies who don’t have their own equipment. And for those of us who do. Motorola (who made this) sais screw you.3. Most unintuitive setup you can imagine.4. No features what so ever. DDNS, or anything else we are use to these days.5. Huge device. Why? The capabilities of this modem should fit in a 1×1 inch box.6. Resets itself every once in a while leaving you with a few minutes of service gaps. Don’t know if this is AT&T’s fault.

Works fine once it connects but connecting is the issue. Had an Siemens Speedstream modem and Belkin router for 5 years with few issues. I would turn power on and be on the internet in less than 30 seconds. Finally the modem died so AT&T sent me the Pace 4111N combo router/modem. No complaints on the wirelss connection. That’s why I bumped it up to two stars. TV, laptops, tablets all connect and run just fine. The LAN (ethernet) connection is the problem. It now takes nearly two minutes to connect if it connects at all. Won’t connect if the computer boots first. Will sometimes drop the connection out of the blue. I contacted AT&T support and after an hour of resetting there was no change. I would avoid this POS.

My old AT&T supplied NETGEAR ADSL2+ROUTER bit the dust on a Friday and when I called them they informed me that I needed a new Modem/Router (This is my 3 one because they are made to fail within 13 months which is 1 month pass the free replacement date) and the cost would be $99.00 + $40.00 3 day shipping which I thought was outrageous, I would have purchased it here on Amazon but I needed it ASAP so I called around locally and found that Best Buy sells this Pace 4111N which is and approved AT&T replacement for the JUNK Netgear, the cost was $89.00 plus I purchased the extra 3 year extended warranty for $14.99, so if this dies after the manufactures 1 year warranty runs out I’m covered for full replacement for 2 more years which is better then AT&T who offers zilch.I would like to add that I’m not a computer Wiz and was dreading calling AT&T customer service to help me set this up, but after I opened the box and followed the simple instructions that PACE included I was up and running within 20 minutes, I would also like to add that when you purchase one of these from AT&T you need to shell out more money for the filters and cables and yes even the power cord (Didn’t Use To) but PACE included all the cables and one main filter and three more filter to place on any other phone lines you may have in your home or office.

Nothing really to tell. Everything works as expected.
praveen murali –
Dont buy this s***, I have this at home provided by AT&T, its been a year and all I do is restart every 2 days, else it gets kind of dead. I am adding a new AC router to fix this issue.
Nora Sweet –
Shipped quickly and worked great but was not really brand new as advertised. I believe all parts were resealed. As there was a previous account in the modem’s setup when calling AT&T. So maybe a little over priced. Otherwise it was just what I needed.
Peter Chukwu –
It never worked. I wish I could have my money back.
emerey furrer –
Didnt work

I don’t recommend this modem. This thing drops connections like 3 times at night. Terrible range as well. I’d rather use a third party modem rather than this.
Jeff –
Works as wanted to on the ATT system. Time will tell about longevity.

ok

This was returned because it didn’t work
charlesn95 –
It is not comparable to my Business model Netopia, that I retired; poor signal strength…

This Pace AT&T Uverse DSL Modem did not work on AT&T Uverse. I spent several hours trying to get it set up. I’ve set up many modems and repeaters in the past so I’m not a newbie. When I called AT&T they told me that it would not work with my Uverse service despite that it has AT&T molded into the side housings. I had to return it. The seller does not pay for shipping so I had to pay for shipping both ways. A waste of my time and money.
Samantha Willis –
Useless. They have tried 100 different things while my modem was still under warranty to get my connection up to snuff. First time that I give them a call after my warranty runs out. We think the issue is your modem and your warranty just ran out so we need you to buy a new one lol.

I see so many reviews on the correct way to set this up if you want to use your own router, I have an Apple Airport Extreme and my wireless is at least five times as fast as it was. Just follow these instructions EXACTLYHow to setup bridge mode in the Motorola NVG589?Bridge mode, DMZ+, or IP Passthrough are the features that permit you to run your own router behind the AT&T provided residential gateway with a public IP address on its outside WAN interface. The NVG589 supports the IP Passthrough feature to accomplish this.To be technically accurate, the NVG589 does not actually “bridge” the traffic. It will enable a default rule to forward all unknown inbound traffic to the AT&T public IP address to the MAC address of the internal router. This will preserve the public destination IP address on incoming packets and allow you to control inbound access for services and security from your personal router. The NVG589 will still map session state information for each connection passing through, similar to a traditional NAT configuration. The only thing it will do with this traffic is rewrite the destination MAC address to that of your personal router’s WAN interface. The NVG589 includes more memory and can support 8192 simultaneous connection entries, as compared to previous gateways that were limited to a maximum of 1024.Make sure you have a notebook or a computer that you can directly connect to the NVG589. Once you have that, unplug all Ethernet cables (including television STBs) from the NVG589 except for the previously mentioned notebook/computer. Note: the WAN connection from AT&T is not an Ethernet connection.Second, write down the WAN-side MAC Address of your personal router.Configuration steps to perform on the NVG589:Note: 192.168.10.1-254 address block is a suggestion in this series of steps. Feel free to adjust this as you wish.1. Login to the NVG589’s web-based configuration interface in your web browser. This can usually be accessed with the following link: https://192.168.1.2542. Go to the “Home Network” -> “Subnets & DHCP” tab. It may ask for your NVG589’s password.3. If your “Device IPv4 Address” is in the same subnet as your personal router’s LAN segment, you should change your personal router’s network configuration to use a different subnet like 192.168.10.0 or whatever you wish, as long as it continues to use private address space in the 192.168.0.0/16, 10.0.0.0/8, or 172.16.0.0/12. The subnet mask can stay the same, 255.255.255.0, or can be adjusted to a larger range if you want.4. Leave the default DHCP settings on the NVG589 as is, unless you want to expand the usable range. This will permit your Television Set Top Boxes to connect and any other devices that you may want to use the integrated wireless or wire directly to the RG. The Television STBs can not connect to your personal router, unless your router has the capability to provide Multicast Routing using IGMPv3. Most consumer routers do not have this capability. It is important that you have only your computer that’s configuring the NVG589 connected to it at this time.5. If you have made any changes, at this point, Click “Save” at the bottom.6. Go to the “Home Network” -> “Wireless” tab.7. If you do not want to use the NVG589’s integrated wireless feature, disable Wireless by choosing “Off” in the “Wireless Operation” option.8. Go to the “Firewall” -> “Packet Filter” tab. Click on the “Disable Packet Filters” button.9. Go to the “Firewall” -> “NAT/Gaming” tab and disable any and all settings.10. Go to the “Firewall” -> “IP Passthrough” tab. Select “Passthrough” in the “Allocation Mode” option.11. Do not enter anything for the “Default Server Internal Address”. Leave this field blank.12. In the “Passthrough Mode” selection choose “DHCPS-Fixed”.13. Type in the WAN-side MAC Address for your router under “Manual Entry”, lowercase is fine. The MAC address should be in the traditional hexadecimal format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx where the x’s should be values from 0-9 or letters a-f, separated with single colons. If you have already connected the WAN interface of your personal router and configured it for DHCP, it may show up in the “Choose from list”. If you select it, it will automatically fill the field with appropriate MAC address.14. The Passthrough DHCP Lease value defaults to 10 minutes. You can not change this.15. Click “Save” at the bottom. It will tell you that it needs to reboot. Stop! Do not reboot the router, yet.16. If you are not putting any devices on the network segment directly attached to the AT&T gateway and do not want any of the Firewall security features active on the NVG589, go to the “Firewall Advanced” tab at the top and turn everything off. The recommendation is to leave these features enabled if you will have any devices on this segment or are using the integrated wireless feature. If you disable these features, make sure you are enabling this functionality on your personal router.17. Near the top of your screen, you should see an option telling you to reboot the router. Go ahead and do this now. It takes about 2 minutes.Configuration steps for your personal router:1. Disconnect your laptop’s ethernet connection from the NVG589 and connect your personal router, while the NVG589 reboots.2. Connect your laptop to your personal router.3. Login to your personal router and change the Internet connection type to DHCP as per your router’s instructions. You should be done configuring the IP Passthrough “bridge mode”, at this point. Verify that your personal router is being assigned the public IP address from AT&T on its WAN interface via DHCP.

The only reason it gets a one star is because i can not leave a no start. AT&T did recommend it too, but it is worthless. It would continually get a DNS error. It would cause a time out before a website could load. Absolutely do not buy this product. BTW we did buy it new and it NEVER worked. We returned it and replaced it with a Actiontec and it works great.

Works great. Good product. Fast delivery

I was forced to get this total piece JUNK by AT&T. When at&t switched to Uverse I had to retire my wonderful Motorola business gateway, and there is no comparison between the two. For starts this thing drops the DSL over and over and over makes watching Netflix or prime video so much fun :/something the Motorola did not do, in fact the Netopia would hang on in the worst of electrical storms. Second the WiFi sig. is lousy, I have a Sony bluray in the next room and get about a 58% that plus the same results are on bot my laptop and Nvidia shield. with the Netopia I could get a sig over half a block away. Going on here, the config. flexibility of this is useless, though to be fail I am comparing it to the Netopia. AND the worse is, it is not DLNA compliant….. Meaning I cannot use my PC as a media server over the bluray in the living room any longer, so now I have to buy a wireless router. Now the clincher. At&t says I have to use this there is no alternative, but looking on the At&t site under the business section I still see the Motorola Netopia listed.

i have the NVG 589 and i constantly get intermittent internet connection. I’ve called AT&T several times will no success. I’m waiting for GOOGLE to come to Chicago and i’m jumping all over that.
aken jariwala –
It’s works fine but the signal is lousy. I had to pay $110 to buy this equipment and its 2.4GHZ. I can get far better equipment for that price. It’s a scam by AT&T to force customers to buy cheap equipment for twice the price. Terrible range for wifi.
RedElectron –
Unfortunately we had to return it because it couldn’t overcome the serious problems we had with our DSL line with the phone company. We were forced to upgrade to ATT UVerse in order to get decent internet/e-mail service and this modem wasn’t designed for that kind of service. It’s a good modem, don’t misunderstand me, but it couldn’t overcome the obstacles that the phone company threw up against it.

Great service. Great item. The real deal. Unfortunately, I did not need it once I got it.

Works okay, but no manual. This is pretty important if you are trying to read the log files it produces or adjust parameters.
