Router does not recognize my Wired connection. Wireless speed is weak. Very disappointing

I assumed I could hook this up without the app for the Ethernet portion, wrong! The app must be installed and a user name and password created. Once I got this done. It works great, just wish I had known about the app part. Once that was done, everything connected functions great and both 3g and 5g are available.

    Ugh – May 15, 2019

I have a fairly more expensive and fancier Nighthawk router I was replacing with this unit for the MU-MIMO feature since I am an avid gamer, and I have to say I’m very impressed with this TP-Link router. I’ve used some TP-Link devices before, such as their WiFi Range Extenders and have always enjoyed their easy setup process and interfaces.Setup is a breeze – all you get in the box is shown in the first pic (router, power supply, ethernet cable, manual). Just connect the router to your modem, power it up and once it’s completely ready to go (when the two wifi signals show up), you can either connect to it directly with an ethernet cable, or connect to one of the wifi signals, and proceed to the router’s setup page at 192.168.0.1. By the way, if you’re doing this from a phone, you’ll want to make sure your mobile data connection is disabled for this, as it may cause issues trying to reach the router’s IP address. Once you’ve got that page loaded, it’s a pretty straightforward setup process from there, just follow instructions to setup passwords, wifi signal names, etc. Alternately, you can download the TP-Link Teather app and setup/manage the router through that. It’s a really nicely designed app and perfect for those that don’t want to deal with IP addresses and the router’s internal interface and settings.Once setup is complete, you’re good to go! The 2nd pic I provided shows my download/upload speed on my Nighthawk (2.5ghz signal), and the 3rd pic is from the TP-Link (also 2.4ghz signal) (by the way, I did multiple tests to try and get an average result – the Nighthawk consistently wavered between 55 and no more than 80Mbs, while the TP-Link wavered between 70 and as high as 120Mbs in some cases). As you can see, the TP-Link beat out the Nighthawk in download speeds by 15Mbs here, which honestly isn’t much, but there is a significant price difference between the two units, as well as their advertised speed potentials, and taking that into consideration, the TP-Link is covering quite a lot of ground for the price point.Overall, I am very happy with this unit. It’s totally affordable and worth it, especially with the MU-MIMO for gaming.

    AMZCUSTOMER – May 21, 2019

I got this router to replace my old TP-Link router. My old router was about 7 years old or so and still worked fine but after upgrading my internet speed through my ISP, I felt I was getting held back by my old router. Another weird thing, my home desktop was somehow being throttled to 5Mbps and I could not for the life of me figure out what was causing this. I thought it was just something wrong with the computer. After using this new router for a few days, I have had no complaints at all. No internet outages. Nothing weird happening. Best of all, my desktop is no longer throttled! I am getting around 35Mbps on the 2.4Ghz band.I really like how easy the installation and setup was. In my case, I just had to unplug my old router and plug this one in. After connecting everything and powering on, I followed the included instructions to setup the router. You have the option to setup the router using the TP-Link app on your phone, connect wirelessly to the router, or use a wired connection. I have a computer with a wired connection so I used that and the setup was a breeze. I would say it took me a total of 20 to 30 minutes to disconnect my old router, wall mount this new one, reconnect all the cables, and finish configuring the router. I actually chose this router over a competitor’s router due to how easy my old TP-Link router was to set up.I also really enjoy having a 5Ghz radio for better WiFi speeds. I am throttled by the ISP at 75Mbps and at the furthest point in house, I was getting 73Mbps. On the 2.4Ghz band, I was getting mid 40’s. So far, I have nothing to dislike about this router.7 years ago I bought the TP-Link router for around $50. 7 years later, I don’t see any reason to spend more than around $50 on a router unless you have gigabit internet speeds or a large home. I absolutely believe this router is worth the price at this point in time. If I have any issues in the future, I will post back here.

I bought this to boost my existing wifi signal and configured it to be a bridge. Works perfectly, and I’m getting 100Mbps (the speed I’m paying for) in most areas of my home now.

This router is a beast and I am loving it. The tether app works well and the speeds on the 5 and 5ghz2 are blazing fast. 2.4 isn’t great but serviceable. This is expensive but bought mine during prime day for 220 and worth every penny. Has a built in VPN with open VPN and it doesn’t give lot information about it so did have to research it.

I’ve had this router for a month and a half now. The best thing about it so far is that I haven’t had to reboot it once – unlike most other routers I’ve owned in the past. User interface is simple and easy to use. I’m sure you could upgrade the firmware if you wanted to though. Signal is not super strong but still delivers pretty good throughput. My wife is streaming Netflix on her phone right now and I’m getting about 65 Mbps on Speedtest from 40 ft away. Not bad.

    Oscar – September 25, 2019

What an awesome router! Gigabit ethernet and I get my full 150+Mbps over 5Ghz. The signal covers my whole entire apartment unlike my other router. The app for your phone is non intrusive and informative. All in all a very well built router. I disabled all the extra “security features” and voice recognition crap and haven’t upgraded the firmware as I want it as bare bones as possible. I didn’t think it was going to that much of an improvement over my old router but it blows my old router out of the water when it comes to range, latency, and features. The photo attached is from an area in my room my old router used to struggle in.

A very much needed improvement over the older 2 netgear AC 750 router. I primarily used wifi accept my security cameras so I can’t give you feedback on that speed, but my wifi went from 60Mbps to over 200 and a much stronger signal throughout the house with external antennas unlike there netgear.

As you can see in the image, the results pretty much speak for themselves. I was paying for 200mbps internet for the longest time and not even utilizing it. The first result, dated 11/30, was on my old router and the one dated 12/2 was on the new TP-Link AC 1200. The setup was also extremely easy. Highly recommend!

The price is unbeatable low during 2019 BF period and the performance of C5400X is extraordinary!Let’s make it short.Pros:1. Aggressive design, someone may not like it but not me!2. Fast and dedicate Wi-Fi performance3. Web management interface is well design and very responsive4. HomeCare features is very useful5. LAN ports with Dual-WAN and Link Aggregation functions!6. Fastest CPU in the market7. Gorgeous NAS performance8. Operation temperture is quite fairCONS:1. Expensive but reasonable on BF2. No advanced gaming-specific features (although it claimed as a Gaming router, but actually most of the must-have function are missing!)3. Quite a big monster4.‧ 2.4GHz Wi-Fi speed are acceptable and could be better5. Parental control need improvement (e.g. the time control could be more specify and I need temporary “free time” function when the time limit is up)**********6. When compare with others gaming routers, the firmware is quite old (more than 1 yrs), would TP-Link make a more update one to maximize this beast, Please?

This is how routers need to be. Excellent user interface and powerful smooth operation.1. Safe, password from start, firewall and threat scanner built in.2. Very fast, this is from speed testing on cell phone in basement 9ms/350mbps/35mbps on Suddenlink.3. Low heat signature. What can I say, compared to my old Netgear R7000 it is a huge improvement. All I had to do is feed it the network password from the old router and all the devices connected to it.The best router is the one you never notice, and this guy’s only noticeable feature is size.Three months on now, never a hiccup, never a kid running to me “Dad, the internet is not working”.Gaming on my warbirds sim and the kids FPS is fabulous.Good job TP Link, I used to buy ethernet switches from this company, but wow, they have come a long way.

Customer support (chat) will keep you online forever going through endless troubleshooting when they should just replace it but they open multiple windows (tickets) and make you wait for responses as they do the same to others. Asurion warranty won’t touch it until manufacturer warranty ends. This router worked for a short time then I noticed severe speed drops to complete signal loss multiple times a week. Stay away from TP (toilet paper) Link.

    Jude Caliwag – January 4, 2020

My 4 year old AirPort Extreme has a better signal in the line of sight 15 ft way. I was looking for wider and stronger signal, which I did not get with his router. Along with its bulky design, I wouldn’t recommend getting this router. I gave it two stars because it works…. sometimes. The tp-link user interface is easy to use and the ability to send signals straight to certain devices.

    NPR_Dan – January 10, 2020

I bought this router expecting to extend the range of my WiFi only to find out that it does NOT work to wirelessly extend your signal. You need to wire it like you would any other router. If you look in questions you’ll see TP link saying that you can use WDS bridging to wirelessly extend your signal but they must be talking about another router. If you look on google you’ll find instructions for other Archer A6 models that do or did in the past use WDS to extend a WiFi signal. That’s not THIS router. The functions simply don’t exist in the firmware even after I updated to the latest. Check images to see from the tutorial the options you’d need vs. the options available with the Archer A6 AC1200 v2 router being sold currently.Very disappointed that this isn’t in BIG BOLD RED FONT on the main page so it’s clear what you are and ARE NOT getting.

Great WiFi router, especially for the price. I regularly get around 200 up and 200 down from my phone, and my desktop gets 1000 up/down over Ethernet. I bought this because I moved to an apartment that had fiber internet, and I didn’t want my old router to be the bottleneck.

This is the best WiFi router I have ever owned. I replaced my previous Amped Wireless router with this router. It is over 3 times as fast and strong as my previous router. It also has over 3 times as wide WiFi range as my previous router. I get great WiFi coverage everywhere on my property including my backyard and even my barn. It has antivirus and firewall protection. I have my router mounted on my upper wall towards the ceiling. I recommend you buying this WiFi router if you plan to buy it.

Router comes with out of date firmware and hardware versions don’t match. Won’t connect to Netgear modem purchased at same time. Tether app for setting up router doesn’t work, and was even told so by tech support. Tech support does not help much, they stick to the script of “restart” until you find one that has enough critical thinking capacity to actually see the issue and approach it to find a solution.I purchased this router because of the “plug and play” product info, it is clearly not So and took 6 calls to tech help to resolve the router’s software issues. It works now, but was not fun to set up in the least and wasted several hours on hold and with hard-to-understand tech help (thick accents).

Im a Comcast technician that works on large business. I install and test Wifi signals on a daily bases. I have had almost every band router, this however is my first TP-LinkI ended up going with this router because to me it seemed like the best you can get right now with out overpaying for the WiFi 6 (which that most people don’t have the devises to even use it with yet, AKA WiFI Ax).Another very cool feature is the separate network you can utilize. Perfect if you have a roommate or someone that wants their own dedicated network, like your kids. And that in addition to the guest network. This router hasn’t disappointed. It’s range is awesome! It would definitely cover any large home if centrally localized.Speeds are excellent through the Wifi. On a 500Gbps connection you should have no issues reaching max speed.Set up is a simple as it can be.Also the thing that put this one over the top for me is the multiple 1 gig ethernet ports along with 8 total ports, so now switch is required for my gaming systems.Overall Im extremely pleased with this router, and would highly recommend it.My bit of advice for anyone new, always place your modem/router as center of the house as possible (obvious I know 🙂 Always on the first floor, not the second floor. Keep it off the ground ( 5-6 feet) and away from kitchens and fireplaces is much as possible, and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches!

It goes down periodically. I swapped a Netgear 750 for this but Netgear never had crashes or problems running the amount of devices I own.I’ve owned a tp link router before and wanted to give them a second chance but it’s the same problems as before. To sum it up, I’ve had more crashes on this device over 6months than my Netgear router had in 6 years.

Hi guys……….There is nothing I dislike about the item I purchased I’m very pleased. My modem that I get internet from the light was blinking orange because of the router I previously had, but as soon as I connected the new router immediately the light that was blinking orange is now green. Which is the color it should’ve been if the old router was working? But everything is working perfectly. I had a lot of challenges with the old router the wifi sucked but listen don’t hesitate in buying.

    Daniel in the lion’s den – May 24, 2020

This router surprised me. It is the tp-link AC1200 Mesh Wi-Fi Router Archer A6. I was unable to exceed 50 Mpbs with my old combo modem/router which was a Netgear N300 C3000 (Docsis 3.0). I upgraded my cable modem to an Arris CM8200A (Docsis 3.1) and coupled it with the AC1200. I had trouble with getting a signal out of the router until I logged in and did a router setup (go to 192.168.0.1 on any browser cabled to back of router port out). Once that was done, everything worked perfectly. The dual-band wireless is much quicker with speeds going from 15 Mpbs to 60-66 Mbps with VPN turned off. We have 2 PC’s direct-wired to the router and they both see speeds in excess of 300 Mbps when our ISP is not loaded (evenings and weekends). I have the router signal strength set to high and there are no dead or slow spots in our small apartment. For now, definitely give the tp-link AC1200 a thumbs up!

As you can see in the screenshots the WiFi router is great and it has good coverage, I have put the router in my living room and it provides at least 80% signal all over the 2Bedroom apartment even in the bathroom. There is not much difference in speed too, I get around 440Mbps using WiFi and 480Mbps using the gigabit ports, so yeah that is good too.Now regarding the UI of the router, it has got two different interfaces and those are easy and advanced mode, for those who know what they are doing advance mode can really get things done for you. The router also has Alexa configuration using which you can ask Alexa to turn on or off the status indicator LEDs or the Guest WiFi network. There are 4 gigabit out and 1 gigabit in and I can confirm that you do get the whole 1gig out of it if your device supports it. There is also a WPS button for connecting devices that support that way of connecting. If you got any questions drop them in the comment section.

Easy setup….pretty much plug and play. Was able to connect my main internet Cat5 cable to the TP-Link AC1200 and have my Verizon FiOS modem run off one of the ports….I was concerned it needed to be the other way around. Worked out perfectly. I have the TP-Link in the basement where the main feed comes in, just for My Cave! The Verizon FiOS modem/WiFi router feeds the two floors upstairs. But, I can still see and TP-Link as well as get coverage on the top level of our home. We have a 4000+ square foot home, so that’s pretty good.
