This is a review of a free demo sample received from TP-LINK for evaluation and feedback as part of their review program. I am an electrical engineer who benchmarks and writes about consumer modems, routers, and communication products. These are my own honest opinions and an unbiased appraisal of the TC-7620 (Hardware v1.0, Software v1.0.0, Build 20151111, Rel 626930) after using and testing it for several weeks on Time Warner Cable 200/20 Mbps (TWC Ultimate 200).The Cable Modem is your primary interface to the Internet. Hence, it is a very important to get the right one. After testing on TWC, my opinion is that you can’t go wrong with the TC-7620. It was very easy and painless to connect and smooth sailing after that. Unlike some other modems I’ve tested, there have been zero problems. No speed degradation ever. No required reboots. Moreover, it was a pleasant surprise to see download and upload speeds improve with the TC-7620. I use this modem with TP-LINK’s C2600 router. My Wi-Fi 802.11ac OOKLA Speedtest results from a Windows-10 ThinkPad laptop are Ping=14ms, Download=228Mbps, Upload=24Mbps. That is during a very busy hour with 2 live webcams, 4 tablets, 2 Roku TV’s, 2 smartphones, and 2 VoIP phone lines going simultaneously. Yes, that is my normal Wi-Fi speed through a router. And it is the reason I am so very happy with my TC-7620 modem and C2600 router.TWC cable charges a $10/month modem rental fee. So in less than a year you’ll be saving money. There is a TP-LINK sticker on the retail box designating a 2-year warranty and 24×7 Technical Support by telephone and email. This shows that TP-LINK is confident the TC-7620 is reliable and is expected to have a long life. Personally, I’ve never had a modem fail. The TC-7620 is slightly warm to the touch while its power adapter remains at room temperature. My prior modem, from another manufacturer, ran hot and required a fan.The TC-7620 is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, rated for up to 680Mbps download and 143Mbps upload. This is accomplished by bonding together 16 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels. On TWC the TC-7620 is approved and designated as “compatible for speeds up to 300Mbps.” DOCSIS 3.0 speed is 16x faster than DOCSIS 2.0. The modem has a Gigabit Ethernet LAN port. There is simultaneous support for IPv4 and IPv6. And it is backward compatible with existing DOCSIS 3.0, 2.0, 1.1, and 1.0 systems. The TC-7620 stands up vertically, less than 6” tall, and is smaller than I had expected from photographs. The exact dimensions are 5.6”x4.5”x 2.3”. Due to the vent hole design on its sides, the modem resembles a small Bluetooth speaker. It has a black matte finish and fingerprints are not visible. Even though it is light in weight, the TC-7620 is stable vertically thanks to 4 rubber pads on the base. A sticker at the bottom of the base lists the Serial Number and MAC Address. There are 5 LED’s on the front of the modem (Power, Downstream, Upstream, Internet, LAN). Initially all these lights are white. When Downstream and Upstream channel bonding is completed these two indicators turn green. The TC-7620 has a fast reconnect time. On TWC, power-on to green light channel bonding takes just 60 seconds. The LAN light flashes, indicating that the LAN port is sending and receiving data.On the back of the TC-7620 there is a F-Connector (Coax Cable input), Ethernet RJ-45 jack (output to Router or Computer) and 12 Volt Power Jack. The power adapter uses only one outlet on my power strip. A recessed Reset Button can restore the modem to its original factory settings.Connecting the TC-7620 and launching a web browser did not automatically direct me to a TWC self-activation page. Self-activation via a browser was unavailable from TWC, at least when I tried it. Instead I called the TWC Easy Connect Activation Line (1-855-704-4503) which is listed in the Quick Installation Guide. Told TWC I had my own new TP-LINK TC-7620 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem and gave them the MAC Address. TWC had me reconnected to the Internet in 10 minutes. Very quick. Later, TWC Tech Support (Philippines) confirmed that it is necessary to phone or chat when activating a new modem. The TC-7620 User Interface is browser based. On a Windows-10 laptop, all the standard browsers worked for me (Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome). I just entered the address link ([…]). This also worked with Windows XP. Initially the Username and Password are both “admin”. The User Interface has two tabs, Basic and Advanced. Under Basic, there is Device Information and Network Information. Under Advanced there is Connection Status, Account Management, System Log. One of the first things I did was select a new modem Password (Advanced, Account Management). Advanced, Network Status, shows the state of all 16 Downstream Bonded Channels and 4 Upstream Bonded Channels. According to TWC an acceptable Power for Downstream Bonded Channels is -15 dBmV to +15 dBmV. (Mine are between +2.1 and +3.5 dBmV.) Downstream QAM256 SNR’s should be above 33 dB. (Mine are higher than 42 dB.) Upstream Bonded Channel Power levels should be less than 50dBmV. (Mine are below 48dBmV.) Adding a splitter will decrease Downstream Power and increase Upstream Power.Just a few minor cons, which are of little consequence to me. There is no way to stand the modem horizontally, no cutouts for wall mounting, and no On/Off Power Switch. Through the web interface, there are no counts of Correctable/Uncorrectable codewords. Here is what comes in the box.(1.) TC-7620 Cable Modem.(2.) Power Adapter (12 Volts, 1 Amp).(2.) Quick Installation Guide. One page, double sided, 9.5”x13”. Connection instructions on front. Back has a FAQ and LED Indicator explanation. A complete User Guide (26 pages) can be downloaded from the TP-LINK web site.(3.) Handy TP-LINK business card. Includes the TC-7620 S/N, MAC Address, default IP Address, Username (admin), and Password (admin).(4.) Technical Support Booklet. TP-LINK Internet address and global phone numbers.(5.) RJ-45 four foot Ethernet CAT.5 cable.TP-LINK DOCSIS 3.0 High Speed Cable Modem, Certified for XFINITY From Comcast And Time Warner Cable (TC-7620)

We have Time Warner, and were renting their UBee DDM352 modem for $8/mo. Following the included instructions, I connected this TP-LINK modem yesterday and powered it up. Then I called Time Warner and gave them the MAC address that is on a sticker on the modem. They provisioned it in about 10 minutes and they made it reboot. It’s been up and running ever since without a problem. I don’t notice any difference in performance. I asked the Time Warner person if I would notice any difference and they said probably not, other than the TP-LINK is capable of higher speeds (making it “future proof”).It’s a pretty simple setup and not much to configure on it. I attached a screen shot. The best part I think is saving $8/mo., so this will be paid off in less than a year.

TP-Link is a brand that I have wanted to try for a while. TWC upgraded my speeds to 200MBPS and so I purchased this. It is a bit smaller from my previous Zoom 5341J. Size wise it is great. As far as the modem goes It Runs Hot. Compared to the big clucky thing TWC gives me for using phone service It Runs Hotter than that. But the Manufacture 2 year warranty should cover that if anything were to happen. Also beware that all your devices May Not work with the new speeds you’ll receive from your provider, like my Windows Desktop from 2011 but my MAC Air (2013) Does Work. Overall I am getting close 200 MBPS, the modem is small, but it does run hot and you do get a 2 year warranty with the purchase.*Speeds Based on Time Warner Cable Performance in New York City

Love this modem, I have 10 Meg/2 Meg Comcast and almost get 12 Meg download. On my old modem I did not even get the advertised speed. I know this modem is overkill for my speed, but I went ahead and got the new 686 Meg version for when the prices come down on the faster internet packages. Also, many have mentioned it is not stable sitting upright. Wall mount it! Like in my photo. Heat rises and you will notice there are vents on both sides so it’s better for it to be on it’s side anyway, it will dissipate the heat much better! Mount the modem on the wall on its side if possible.Update 18 months later. I am now on the Comcast 75MBPS plan and I get as high as 90MBPS download speeds now!Update 3 years later, just sold the modem after over 3 years of use!

This modem replaced the ARRIS modem/router that I had from Time Warner Cable. The setup of the TP-Link modem was easy. After making all the connections and setting up the modem, the internet didn’t work. I called TWC and they had to add the MAC address of the modem. After that, it was full speed ahead. The speed test results showed that the download/upload speeds were comparable to the ARRIS modem but the TP-Link had a much faster ping time. It’s been very reliable and I have it paired with the TP-Link Archer C3200 router and I’ve had no issues what so ever. I am completely satisfied with this product. This is a review of a free product received from TP-LINK as part of the review program.

I recently purchased xfinity internet for my apartment & I am renting one of their modem/router. Unfortunately that router I am renting out for $10 a month isnt cutting it for me. My package is above 100Mbps & my average speeds were 30-50 Mbps.At first I purchased the Netgear N600 modem/router & I did not see any improvement, in fact it was worse than the modem Im renting from Comcast. The Netgear had worse range! After returning it & getting a refund I did some research & found out many people receive better results with buying a seperate router & modem. Although I do not like the look of having two boxes instead of one but I do like the results! I purchased the TP-LINK DOCSIS 3.0 TC-7620 & Archer C7 AC1750 & I am absolutely loving the results so far my speeds have tripled if not quadrupled!Speedtest.net ResultsEthernet connection: 91MbpsWireless 2.4G connection: 95MbpsWireless 5G connection: 120 MbpsPros: Install was a breeze approx. 15-20 min & didn’t even have to call comcast like I did with the Netgear.Dual Band 2.4 & 5Long RangeCons: None.*note 2.4g connection has fast speed & long range but has more interference from other devices. 5g connection has faster speeds & less range but less interference. Will post an update later on.

I would have given this 5 stars if it were not for the fact that I have to plug it in up side down. It is rather heavy, compared to my previous ASUS repeater that failed, and when plugged in right side up it is top heavy and leans out from the wall. Also once it has been paired to the router with WPS it is not possible to change the channel number, it only duplicates the channel of the router. The round circle indicator blue/red, good/not good connection indicator is a touch sensitive. It could use another in between state. Mine is almost always red and it is only about 20-30 feet from the router with only a single interior door between. However, even when red, I have a real good connection from my mobile device to the router. I don’t use the AC portion, have only wireless N and G devices. The Android app is a bit confusing as a few others have reported. I do like that you can program a time period of the day in which all the LED lights are turned off, it is quite bright in the dark bedroom at night.

We’ve been using this modem for a couple of months since we switched from Verizon Enhanced DSL to Comcast’s Xfinity Blast! offering. This modem has been rock-solid and works amazingly well with our established home network. The overhead alone with this modem is more than double what our total connection was with Verizon.I’ve had very good luck with TP-Link routers, switches and extenders over the last few years. I’d highly recommend this modem if you’re a new cable Internet customer, or looking to get rid of your rental modem.

First, when I plugged it in the electric outlet it flashed blue and nothing happened for couple of minutes, I took it to another outlet same thing, eventually it worked while hanging in an outlet which is dangerous thing and I’ve never had this problem with any product what so ever. Then after setting it up I got the worst speed possible, I was getting much better speeds without it. Pictures attached For speed from router and from range extender. when I placed it it was 20 feet away from the router with no walls or no barriers at all. Don’t recommend to anyone.

Excellent product. Just follow the step to setup. No more dead zones in my house

This was the best thing to happen to my internet! I replaced the crappy modem/router provided by Comcast with this product and automatically saw huge results. I was getting 5x faster speeds on my cell, computer, ps4, etc. I cannot tell you that this changed everything for me. I have been paying comcast for their modem for over 5 years! Spent close to $720. Buy it and if you don’t like it send it back. Save a ton of money.

Only made it a year, then burned up. Had to cycle it almost every day for the last 6 months until it literally melted. Install with a fan blowing on it if you want to go long. I’m not a fan.

It’s a great modem! I haven’t had it for long but it has worked flawlessly from day one. It’s only being used with a 30Mbps internet connection, so it’s obviously way underutilized but it was only $2 more than the 7610 at the time that I purchased it so I decided to splurge for the faster modem in case I ever wanted to upgrade my internet connection. I paired it with a TP Link Archer C900.

I have Comcast and the setup was a breeze. As seen in the picture, I have this connected to a TP Link AC1900 router and it works great.

I simply don’t understand all the negative reviews! A friend gave me this repeater. My router is a 2.5 Ghz router (a/b/g/n. I don’t have a 5 Ghz router but this thing transmits 5 Ghz! All I did was plug it in, push the wps button and push the wps button on the router. And connected. Uses the same name and password as my router except it has a 5g after our network name. I take it to motels (reset) and it works great! I could never play this one Android game on the front porch. Now I just plug it in on the front porch. Getting 25% stronger signal than the living room that the porch is attached to. And I get a IPv6 address which I never got on a “n” repeater. I honestly love it!!

I am using Optimum 100 and had an issue of distribution in my internet speed. After using this modem, everything seems to be fine and have had no issue.

Great “MODEM” (Not a wi-fi router) It solved many of my speed and connection issues I was having with Xfinity’s all in one box. This modem is hooked up to a tp- link Archer A9 AC1900 Smart Wi-Fi Router. Many features to get your network the way you want it.
