How to Set Up Bridge Mode

Bridge mode disables the router functions of the TG3482G so you can use your own separate router while keeping the TG3482G as a modem only. This is useful if you want to use a third-party router with more advanced features or better WiFi coverage.

Before you begin:

  • Bridge mode will disable the TG3482G's private WiFi network, firewall, and all router-level features.
  • Only one device can be connected via Ethernet to the gateway while in bridge mode.
  • You will lose access to Xfinity xFi features, xFi Pods, and Advanced Security.
  • If you have xFi Pods already activated, you must remove them before enabling bridge mode.
  1. Connect your computer to the TG3482G using an Ethernet cable. Do not use WiFi for this process.
  2. Open a browser and go to 10.0.0.1. Log in with your admin credentials.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click Gateway, then select At a Glance.
  4. Find the Bridge Mode option and click Enable.
  5. A warning message will appear stating that enabling bridge mode will disable the router functions and turn off the private WiFi network. Click OK to confirm.
  6. The gateway will restart. This may take several minutes.
  7. Once the gateway has restarted, connect your own router to one of the Ethernet ports on the TG3482G using an Ethernet cable. Configure your router according to its own setup instructions.

Tip: Before enabling bridge mode, disable the WiFi radios and the Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot through the Xfinity app. Some users have reported that bridge mode does not always fully disable the WiFi radio, and the hotspot feature remains active by default even in bridge mode.

Known issue: Some firmware versions of the TG3482G set the firewall to "Low" instead of fully disabling it when bridge mode is enabled. This can cause double NAT issues, resulting in slow speeds and packet loss. If you experience these symptoms after enabling bridge mode, log back in to 10.0.0.1, go to the Firewall section, and manually set the firewall to Custom with no boxes checked.

To disable bridge mode:

  1. Connect to the gateway with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Log in at 10.0.0.1.
  3. Navigate to Gateway > At a Glance.
  4. Set Bridge Mode to Disable.

LED Indicator Light Meanings

  • Power light: Solid green means the gateway is powered on and operating normally. If this light is off, the device is not receiving power. A blinking power light during startup is normal as the device initializes.
  • Online light: Solid green means the gateway is connected to the internet and fully operational. Blinking green means the gateway is attempting to establish an internet connection. If the light continues blinking for more than 10 minutes, there may be a connectivity issue.
  • WiFi light: Solid green means the wireless radio is active and broadcasting. Blinking green indicates active wireless data traffic, which is normal. If the WiFi light is off, the wireless radio has been disabled either through the admin tool, the Xfinity app, or because bridge mode is enabled.
  • Tel (Telephone) lights: Solid green on Line 1 or Line 2 means the phone service is active and registered. If this light is off or blinking, the phone line is not connected or is still registering with the network.
  • WPS light: Blinks when WPS pairing mode is active after the WPS button is pressed. Returns to off or solid after pairing is complete.

How to Use WPS (WiFi Protected Setup)

  1. On the device you want to connect, select the option to connect using WPS. This is usually found in the WiFi settings menu.
  2. Within two minutes, press the WPS button on the TG3482G. On most units, the WPS button is on the top or front of the device.
  3. The WPS light will blink while the devices pair. Once connected, the light will stop blinking and your device will be on the network.

Battery Backup

The TG3482G supports an optional battery backup unit (sold separately). The battery allows the gateway to maintain phone service during a power outage. This is important for emergency 911 calling and for home security systems that rely on the gateway's internet connection.

To install the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the bottom of the gateway.
  2. Slide open the cover.
  3. Insert the battery according to the polarity markings.
  4. Close the compartment.

The gateway will automatically detect the battery and begin charging it.

Note: The battery backup powers the modem and phone functions only. WiFi and internet service may not be available during a power outage depending on whether your ISP's local infrastructure also has power.

How to Factory Reset the Arris TG3482G

A factory reset restores the gateway to its original settings. This erases any custom WiFi names, passwords, port forwarding rules, and other configuration changes. The WiFi name and password will revert to the defaults printed on the device label.

  1. Locate the reset button on the back of the gateway. It is a small recessed hole.
  2. Using a paperclip or pin, press and hold the reset button for approximately 30 seconds.
  3. Release the button. The gateway will restart, which may take 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Once the gateway has fully restarted, connect using the default WiFi credentials on the device label. The admin tool login will revert to:
    • Username: admin
    • Password: password (or the WiFi password on the label, depending on firmware version)

Troubleshooting Common Issues

No power or no lights on the gateway:

  • Check that the power cable is firmly connected to both the gateway and the wall outlet.
  • Try a different outlet.
  • If using a power strip, plug directly into the wall to rule out a faulty strip.
  • If the gateway still does not power on, the power supply or the unit may be defective.

Online light keeps blinking and never goes solid:

  • The gateway is unable to establish a connection with your ISP.
  • Check that the coaxial cable is tightly connected at both the wall and the gateway.
  • Try a different coaxial cable if available.
  • If the issue persists, there may be a service outage in your area. Check the Xfinity Status Center at xfinity.com/support/status or call Xfinity support.

WiFi is not showing up on devices:

  • Verify that the WiFi light on the front of the gateway is solid green.
  • If it is off, the WiFi radio may be disabled. Check the Xfinity app or admin tool to confirm WiFi is turned on.
  • If bridge mode is enabled, WiFi will be disabled by design.

Slow internet speeds:

  • Run a speed test at speedtest.xfinity.com using a wired Ethernet connection to determine if the issue is with the gateway or with WiFi.
  • If wired speeds are normal but WiFi is slow, try moving closer to the gateway or reducing the number of devices on the network.
  • Check for interference from other electronics.
  • If wired speeds are also slow, restart the gateway by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.

Cannot log in to the admin tool at 10.0.0.1:

  • Confirm you are connected to the TG3482G's network.
  • Try using a wired Ethernet connection.
  • If the login page loads but the default credentials do not work, the password may have been changed. Perform a factory reset to restore the defaults.
  • If the page does not load at all, the admin tool may be disabled on your gateway. Open the Xfinity app, go to your gateway settings, and look for the option to enable admin tool access under Advanced Settings.

Frequent disconnections or drops:

  • Check all cable connections for looseness.
  • Ensure the coaxial cable is not damaged, kinked, or using excessive splitters.
  • If the issue happens at specific times of day, it may be related to network congestion.
  • Restart the gateway. If disconnections continue, contact Xfinity to have your signal levels checked.

No phone service (Tel light off or blinking):

  • Confirm that a phone is plugged into the Line 1 or Line 2 port on the back of the gateway.
  • Make sure Xfinity Voice service is active on your account.
  • Restart the gateway and wait for the Tel light to turn solid green.
  • If the light does not stabilize, contact Xfinity support.

Double NAT issues when using bridge mode:

  • If you experience slow speeds, connection drops, or problems with online gaming and VPN after enabling bridge mode, you may have a double NAT conflict.
  • Log in to 10.0.0.1 and check the firewall settings.
  • Set the firewall to Custom with all options unchecked to fully disable it.
  • This is a known firmware issue on some TG3482G units where bridge mode sets the firewall to Low instead of disabling it.

Gateway is overheating:

  • Make sure the gateway is standing upright and not enclosed in a cabinet or stacked with other electronics.
  • Leave at least a few inches of clearance around all sides for airflow.
  • If the unit feels excessively hot to the touch and is frequently restarting, contact Xfinity for a replacement.

Xfinity Hotspot Feature

The TG3482G can broadcast a separate public Xfinity WiFi hotspot signal in addition to your private network. This hotspot is used by other Xfinity customers in your area and does not affect your private network speed or data usage.

If you prefer to disable this feature:

  • Open the Xfinity app and go to Account > Manage Xfinity WiFi.
  • Or call Xfinity support to request it be turned off.

Port Forwarding

If you need to open specific ports for gaming, security cameras, or other applications:

  1. Log in to the admin tool at 10.0.0.1.
  2. In the left menu, click Advanced, then click Port Forwarding.
  3. Click Add Service.
  4. Select Other from the Common Service drop-down menu and give the rule a descriptive name.
  5. Choose the service type (TCP, UDP, or Both).
  6. Enter the port number or port range you want to open.
  7. Enter the local IP address of the device you are forwarding ports to.
  8. Click Save.

Tip: For port forwarding to work reliably, the device receiving the forwarded ports should have a static local IP address or a DHCP reservation.

Compatibility

The Arris TG3482G is designed for use with Comcast Xfinity internet and voice service. It may function with other cable ISPs, but this is not guaranteed. Always confirm with your internet service provider that this model is supported on their network and compatible with your plan speed before using it.
