Updated on

The Actiontec T3200 is a bonded VDSL2 wireless gateway that combines a DSL or fiber modem and a dual-band router in one unit. It is used by CenturyLink, Windstream, TDS, and other DSL and fiber providers. This manual walks through everything you need to set it up, secure it, and keep it running, written so that both first-time users and advanced users can follow along.

Quick reference: Most T3200 settings live in the modem interface. On CenturyLink units, open a browser and go to http://192.168.0.1, then sign in with the Admin Username and Admin Password printed on the modem sticker. Windstream and TDS units may use a different address, so always check the sticker first.

Features and specifications

The T3200 is built for DSL and fiber networks and works as a single all-in-one gateway. Key features include:

  • Connection types: ADSL2+, bonded VDSL2 with vectoring, and an SFP slot for G.fast or PON fiber, so it fits fiber-to-the-home, fiber-to-the-node, and fiber-to-the-curb networks.
  • Pair bonding: Uses two phone-line pairs at once for greater reach and higher speeds than a single-pair modem.
  • Dual-band WiFi: 4x4 802.11ac on the 5 GHz band and 3x3 802.11n on the 2.4 GHz band, for a combined rating up to roughly 2.3 Gbps.
  • Wired ports: Four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for wired devices.
  • USB: USB port for shared storage or supported peripherals.
  • MoCA (T3200M): The T3200M variant adds MoCA 2.0 for networking over coaxial cable.
  • Built-in router features: Firewall, port forwarding, DMZ, parental controls and scheduling, guest WiFi, and bridge mode.

What is in the box

  • Actiontec T3200 gateway
  • Power adapter
  • Ethernet cable
  • DSL phone cable (for DSL connections)
  • Quick start guide

If you bought a refurbished unit, the SFP fiber module and some accessories may not be included, since those depend on your service type. Check your provider's requirements before installing.

How to set up and connect the T3200

Follow these steps for a standard installation. Use a wired connection for setup when possible, since it prevents you from being knocked offline while saving changes.

  1. Connect the broadband line. For DSL, plug the gray phone cable from the wall jack into the DSL or WAN port on the back of the modem. For fiber, connect the fiber line to the SFP slot or follow your provider's ONT instructions.
  2. Power on the modem. Plug in the power adapter and press the power button if present. Allow two to five minutes for the modem to boot and sync. The lights will cycle during this time.
  3. Connect a device. Plug a computer into one of the four Ethernet ports, or join the default WiFi network listed on the modem sticker.
  4. Open the setup interface. Open a web browser. On CenturyLink units the setup wizard often launches on its own. If it does not, type http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar.
  5. Enter your provider credentials. When prompted, enter the PPP or PPPoE username and password supplied by your internet provider. These are not the same as the modem admin login. Apply the settings and wait for the modem to authenticate.
  6. Confirm you are online. The Internet light should turn solid green once the connection is active. If it stays red or orange, see the troubleshooting section below.

Note: If the Internet light is orange after setup, the modem may still need activation. Open a browser and you should be redirected to your provider's activation page. Follow the prompts to finish.

How to access the IP admin settings

The admin interface, sometimes called the modem GUI, is where you manage WiFi, security, and advanced features.

  1. Connect a device to the modem over WiFi or with an Ethernet cable. A computer or tablet works best.
  2. Open a web browser and type http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar, then press Enter. If that address does not load, check the sticker for the correct address, since Windstream and TDS units sometimes use a different one.
  3. At the login screen, enter the Admin Username and Admin Password printed on the modem sticker.
  4. Select Apply or Login to reach the main menu.

Important: Do not remove or discard the modem sticker. It holds the default admin username and password, and on many units these cannot be recovered if lost. Without them you may need a factory reset to regain access.

How to change the WiFi name (SSID)

Changing the network name makes your WiFi easier to recognize when you connect devices.

  1. Sign in to the admin interface at http://192.168.0.1.
  2. Select Wireless Setup.
  3. Choose the band you want to edit. If your modem lists them separately, set the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names one at a time.
  4. Find the Network Name (SSID) field and type your new name.
  5. Select Apply or Save. The network will briefly disconnect, then reappear under the new name.
  6. Reconnect your devices to the renamed network.

Many users give the two bands different names, such as adding "-5G" to the 5 GHz network, so they can choose the faster band for nearby devices.

How to change the WiFi password

Set a strong WiFi password to keep your network secure. This is the password devices use to join WiFi, not the admin login.

  1. Sign in to the admin interface at http://192.168.0.1.
  2. Select Wireless Setup, then open the security or password settings.
  3. Set the security type to WPA2 or, if available, WPA2/WPA3. This is the strongest option for home networks.
  4. In the Pre-Shared Key or WiFi Password field, enter a new password. Use at least 12 to 16 characters and avoid reusing your admin login password.
  5. Select Apply or Save.
  6. Reconnect each device using the new password. Devices saved with the old password will need to be updated.

How to set up bridge mode

Bridge mode turns off the T3200's built-in router and WiFi so it passes the internet connection straight to your own router. Use it when you want a third-party router to handle your network. You will need your provider's PPPoE username and password, since your router will manage the connection.

  1. Sign in to the admin interface at http://192.168.0.1.
  2. Open Advanced Setup.
  3. Select the WAN or Broadband Settings section.
  4. Change the transport or connection mode to Transparent Bridging. On some firmware this is labeled PPP Transparent Bridging or Bridge Mode.
  5. Apply the change and let the modem reboot.
  6. Connect your own router to one of the T3200 Ethernet ports, then enter your provider's PPPoE credentials in your router's setup so it can connect to the internet.

Note: In true bridge mode the T3200's WiFi and router features are disabled, so all network management happens on your own router. To return to normal operation, sign back in and switch the mode back, or perform a factory reset.

What the status lights mean

The front lights tell you the state of the modem at a glance.

Light Meaning
Power solid green Modem is on and working normally
Power red Startup problem or hardware fault, try a reboot
DSL or Broadband blinking Modem is trying to sync with the line, wait a few minutes
DSL or Broadband solid green Line is synced and ready
Internet solid green Connected to the internet
Internet red or orange No internet or activation needed, see troubleshooting
WiFi green Wireless is on and broadcasting
Ethernet green A wired device is connected

How to reboot and factory reset

Reboot clears temporary glitches without erasing your settings. Unplug the power, wait about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and allow a few minutes to fully restart. You can also reboot from the Utilities menu in the admin interface.

Factory reset erases all custom settings and returns the modem to defaults, including the WiFi name and password on the sticker. Reset only if you are locked out or asked to by support.

  1. With the modem powered on, find the small recessed Reset button on the back.
  2. Press and hold it with a paperclip for about 12 to 15 seconds.
  3. Release and wait several minutes for the modem to reboot.
  4. Reconnect using the default WiFi name and admin login from the sticker, then reconfigure your settings or re-run activation.

Troubleshooting common issues

No internet connection

  • Check that the DSL or fiber line and power cables are firmly seated.
  • Reboot the modem by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
  • If the Internet light is orange, open a browser to trigger your provider's activation page.
  • Confirm your PPP or PPPoE credentials are entered correctly in the setup interface.
  • If the DSL light never goes solid, there may be a line issue, so contact your provider.

Slow or weak WiFi

  • Place the modem in a central, open spot away from walls, metal, and other electronics.
  • Connect close-up devices to the 5 GHz band for higher speeds and use 2.4 GHz for range.
  • Reboot the modem to clear congestion.
  • Test speed with a wired connection to see whether the issue is WiFi or the line itself.

Cannot reach 192.168.0.1

  • Make sure you are connected to the T3200, not a neighbor's network or a phone on cellular data.
  • Confirm the correct address on the sticker, since some ISP versions differ.
  • Try a different browser or clear the browser cache.
  • If you are in bridge mode, the admin page may not respond as usual, so a factory reset restores access.

Forgot the admin password

  • Check the modem sticker for the default Admin Username and Password.
  • If the login was changed and is lost, perform a factory reset to restore the defaults.

Frequent disconnects or reboot loops

  • Try a different power outlet and make sure the adapter is the one made for the modem.
  • Reseat the DSL or fiber cable and check for damage.
  • If the modem overheats, give it ventilation and keep it off carpet or enclosed shelves.
  • If reboot loops continue after a factory reset, the unit may be failing and need replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default IP address for the Actiontec T3200?

CenturyLink units use http://192.168.0.1. Windstream and TDS units may use a different address, so check the sticker on the modem if that one does not load.

What is the default login for the T3200?

The Admin Username and Admin Password are printed on the sticker attached to the modem. There is no single universal default, which is why the sticker should never be removed.

Is the T3200 a modem or a router?

Both. It is an all-in-one gateway with a built-in DSL and fiber modem plus a dual-band WiFi router, so most homes do not need a separate router.

Can I use my own router with the T3200?

Yes. Put the T3200 in bridge mode, then connect your own router and enter your provider's PPPoE credentials on that router.

Does the T3200 support fiber?

Yes. It has an SFP slot for G.fast and PON fiber connections in addition to ADSL2+ and bonded VDSL2 DSL service.

How do I reset the T3200 to factory settings?

Hold the recessed Reset button on the back for about 12 to 15 seconds with a paperclip, then wait for the modem to reboot. This erases all custom settings.
