RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are not on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. Both play on Windows, Mac, Steam, iPhone, iPad, and Android. The one RuneScape game you can play on a console is RuneScape: Dragonwilds, which launched on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15, 2026. RuneScape 4, announced on October 3, 2026, has no confirmed platforms yet.

This guide shows where every RuneScape game plays today, what Jagex has and has not said about RuneScape 4, and what kind of internet connection each platform needs. Platform details were checked against Jagex's own download, support, and announcement pages on October 3, 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are computer and mobile games. Neither one has an Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch version.
  • RuneScape: Dragonwilds is the first RuneScape game on console. It plays on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, and players on all of them can join the same world.
  • RuneScape 4 (working title RS4) is in development in Unreal Engine. Jagex says it is a few years away and has not named a single platform.
  • RuneScape Reignited launches December 2, 2026 as a fresh start inside the existing RuneScape game, so it plays on the same computers and phones.
  • Every one of these games cares more about a steady connection than a fast one. A cable to the router or strong WiFi matters more than the top speed of your internet plan.

  • Xbox means Xbox Series X|S. Jagex's platform list for Dragonwilds does not include Xbox One, PS4, or the original Nintendo Switch.
  • Windows for Dragonwilds means Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the Jagex Launcher.
  • Linux: Jagex's download pages list Linux for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. The Old School page links a Linux launcher file labeled beta, and Jagex's recommended specifications page gives no Linux requirements.

Is RuneScape on Xbox, PS5, or Switch?

No. Jagex's download pages for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape list Windows, Mac, Linux, Steam, the App Store, and Google Play. Neither page lists a console of any kind.

If you want RuneScape on a TV with a controller in your hands, the game that does it is RuneScape: Dragonwilds. It is worth knowing what you are getting before you download it. Dragonwilds is a co-op survival game for one to four players set in the RuneScape world, with gathering, building, and boss fights. It is a separate game from the two online RuneScape worlds that thousands of people share at once, and your RuneScape or Old School character does not carry into it.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Xbox, PS5, and Switch 2

Dragonwilds left early access on September 15, 2026. Jagex's launch post lists PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store, the Jagex Launcher, and Steam. It is the first time a RuneScape game has been released on a console.

  • Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft's Xbox Wire lists Dragonwilds for Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass, playable on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and cloud. Subscription catalogs change, so confirm it is still included before you subscribe for it.
  • PlayStation Plus. Coverage of the launch reports that Dragonwilds also arrived in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalog on day one.
  • Crossplay. Version 1.0 added crossplay. The host chooses whether a world is open to other platforms each time it is loaded, crossplay worlds appear in the world browser, and friends can join with an invite code.
  • No shared progress between platforms. Crossplay lets you join a friend on another system. It does not move your character. Jagex has said progress does not carry from one platform to another, so pick the platform you plan to stay on.
  • Controller support. The PC version supports controllers, and the 1.0 update remapped attack buttons for them.
  • Mac. Dragonwilds is not on Jagex's platform list for Mac.
  • Online play on console. Online co-op on a console usually requires that console's online membership. Check the store listing for your system.

RuneScape and Old School RuneScape on PC, Mac, and Steam

On a computer, both games start from the Jagex Launcher or from Steam. Jagex's recommended specifications are modest by current standards.

Jagex Launcher requirements

  • Windows: Windows 10 or later, 64-bit.
  • Mac: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later.
  • Installing the launcher requires administrator permission on the computer.

Recommended specs for the games on Windows

  • Processor: Intel i3-6100 or an AMD processor at 2.4 GHz or faster.
  • Graphics: GeForce GTX 600 series, AMD Radeon R7 260, or Intel UHD Graphics 610.
  • Memory: 8 GB of RAM.
  • Storage: at least 8 GB free for RuneScape, or 2 GB for Old School RuneScape.

On a Mac, Jagex recommends macOS 11 or later and 4 GB of RAM for either game. Old School RuneScape players can also use RuneLite or HDOS, the two third-party clients Jagex lists as approved.

Steam and Steam Deck

Both games have their own Steam pages, and Jagex links to them from its download pages. The Steam Deck is a different story. Jagex's support page says the Steam Deck is currently not supported and may not have full functionality for RuneScape or Old School RuneScape. Some players run the games on it anyway, without official support.

RuneScape on iPhone, iPad, and Android

RuneScape and Old School RuneScape both have full mobile versions in the App Store and Google Play. Your account works on computer and mobile alike, so you can train a skill on your phone and pick up on your PC later.

  • iPhone and iPad: iOS 13 or later and 3 GB of RAM.
  • Android: Android 9.0 (Pie) or later and 4 GB of RAM.
  • Storage: at least 6 GB free for RuneScape, or 2 GB for Old School RuneScape.

Dragonwilds does not have a phone or tablet version.

What Platforms Will RuneScape 4 Be On?

Nobody outside Jagex knows yet. Jagex revealed the game at RuneFest on October 3, 2026 under the working title RS4. Here is what its announcement confirms:

  • It is a new RuneScape online role-playing game, built in Unreal Engine.
  • It is set in Gielinor and begins in Ashenfall, the region introduced in Dragonwilds.
  • It will sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and Dragonwilds. It does not replace any of them.
  • It is still a few years away. Jagex plans to share much more in 2027, including how players can get involved.

On platforms, accounts, membership, combat, and skills, Jagex wrote that it is too early to say. That means there are no system requirements, no console list, and no release date to plan around.

There is one clue worth watching. Jagex says RS4 will build on the technology it developed for Dragonwilds, and Dragonwilds is the game that brought RuneScape to Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch 2. That makes a console version a reasonable thing to watch for. It is not a confirmation. When Jagex names a platform, we will update the table above.

What about RuneScape Reignited?

Reignited is the nearer date on the calendar. It launches December 2, 2026 as a fresh-start way to play the existing RuneScape game, with new characters and a separate economy. According to Jagex's RuneFest press release, as published by Bleeding Cool, players can get full Reignited access without a membership from December 2 to December 12. Because it lives inside RuneScape, it plays on the same platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, Steam, iPhone, iPad, and Android.

What Internet Connection Does Each Platform Need?

None of these games needs a fast internet plan. They send small amounts of data back and forth, so a steady connection with little delay matters far more than download speed. What changes from platform to platform is how the device reaches your router.

Computers

RuneScape and Old School RuneScape both run on a 0.6 second game tick, which the Old School RuneScape Wiki describes in detail. The server handles actions in those beats, which makes the games more forgiving of a little WiFi delay than a fast shooter. A lag spike or a dropout that lasts longer than a tick is another matter. It can cost you a prayer switch or a bite of food at the wrong moment.

If the computer sits near the router, plug in an Ethernet cable. If it cannot, connect to the 5 GHz band instead of 2.4 GHz. Our explainer on 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz covers why.

Xbox, PS5, and Switch 2

Dragonwilds is an action game with timed dodges and parries, so delay shows up sooner than it does in the two older games. Xbox Series X|S and PS5 have an Ethernet port on the back, and the Switch 2 dock has one built in. A cable to the router is the most reliable upgrade a console can get.

Co-op adds one more factor. When a friend hosts the world, everyone else connects to that friend's game, so the host's home connection carries the whole group. If your sessions stutter, have the player with the most stable connection host, or use a dedicated server.

Cloud gaming

Game Pass lists Dragonwilds for cloud play. Streaming a game is much harder on a home network than running it on a console, because the picture itself is sent to you live. Cloud play is where weak WiFi shows first, so sit close to the router or use a wired connection.

Phones and tablets

Mobile play runs over WiFi or cellular data. At home, distance from the router is the usual weak point. A phone that falls to one or two bars of WiFi can disconnect in the middle of a fight. A mesh system or an extender covers the rooms a single router cannot reach.

If every device in the house lags at the same time, the home network is the cause, not the game. Our guide to reducing gaming lag covers the router settings that help, and our bufferbloat guide shows how to test for a common hidden cause.
