If you subscribe to TDS Telecom cable internet, purchasing your own compatible modem is one of the easiest ways to save money and improve your home network. TDS charges a monthly rental fee for their provided gateway equipment, and those costs add up fast. Owning your modem can save you up to $120 or more per year while giving you more control over your network hardware.

TDS Telecom delivers cable internet using DOCSIS technology over its hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) network. Their cable service areas support both DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 modems, depending on the speed tier you subscribe to. DOCSIS 3.1 is the current standard and is required for gigabit-level plans, while DOCSIS 3.0 modems still work for lower-tier packages.

TDS Telecom Cable Internet Speed Tiers and Modem Requirements

TDS offers several cable internet speed tiers, and each has a minimum modem channel configuration to deliver reliable performance.

  • Ultra 100 — Minimum 8x4 channel DOCSIS 3.0 modem recommended
  • Ultra 300 — Minimum 16x4 channel DOCSIS 3.0 modem recommended
  • Ultra 600 — Minimum 24x4 channel DOCSIS 3.0 or DOCSIS 3.1 modem recommended
  • 1 Gig — DOCSIS 3.1 modem required, minimum 32x8 channel bonding

For the best performance and future-proofing, we recommend choosing a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with at least 32 downstream and 8 upstream channels regardless of your current plan. This ensures your hardware is ready if you upgrade your speed tier later.

What to Look for in a TDS Cable Compatible Modem

When choosing a modem for TDS cable internet, prioritize DOCSIS 3.1 support, adequate channel bonding for your speed tier, and at least one Gigabit Ethernet port. Models with a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port are ideal for 1 Gig plans, since a standard 1 Gbps port can create a bottleneck at higher speeds. Keep in mind that TDS cable modems connect to your home through a coaxial cable outlet, so your home needs at least one active coax connection for service.

It is also important to note that TDS does not publish an official public list of approved third-party modems the way some larger cable providers do. We recommend confirming compatibility with TDS directly before purchasing. If you use TDS phone service bundled with your internet, a standalone modem may not support telephony, so check with TDS about EMTA or voice gateway requirements before replacing a leased gateway.
