Dual Band vs Tri Band Router: Do You Need the Third Band?

A dual band router gives you one 2.4GHz band and one 5GHz band. That is plenty for a small apartment or a household with a handful of devices. The third band starts paying for itself when:

  • You have 20 or more connected devices, including smart home gear that sits on WiFi all day
  • Two or more people stream 4K video or game online at the same time
  • You work from home on video calls while the rest of the house is busy
  • You run a mesh system and want a dedicated band for the link between nodes (wireless backhaul)
  • Your internet plan is 500 Mbps or faster and a single 5GHz band is the bottleneck

Which Tri-Band Generation Is Right for You

AC Tri-Band (WiFi 5): 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 5GHz

Models like the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 R7900, TP-Link Archer C3200 and ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 split their devices across two 5GHz bands. Smart Connect features assign each device to the least crowded band automatically. These are the best value in the collection for internet plans up to about 500 Mbps and homes with a lot of older devices that cannot use 6GHz anyway.

WiFi 6E Tri-Band: 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz

The NETGEAR Nighthawk RAXE300 and similar WiFi 6E routers add the 6GHz band, which only newer phones, laptops and consoles can use. That is the point: 6GHz has no legacy traffic and almost no neighbor interference, so your newest devices get a private fast lane while everything else shares 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

WiFi 7 Tri-Band: The Current Top Tier

Tri-Band Mesh WiFi Systems

Tri-band matters even more in mesh. Dual band mesh nodes have to share one 5GHz band between your devices and the wireless link back to the main router, which can cut throughput in half at every hop. Tri-band mesh systems like the NETGEAR Orbi RBR50/RBS50 and Linksys Velop WHW0303 reserve a whole band for that backhaul, so the satellite rooms get nearly the same speed as the room with the router.   • Tri-band routers are routers, not modems. They connect to your existing cable modem, DSL gateway or fiber ONT over Ethernet. If you need a modem too, browse by your provider from the menu.
  • Check your devices, not just your plan. The 6GHz band on WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 routers only helps devices that support it. If most of your gear is more than four years old, an AC tri-band model delivers the same practical benefit for less.

What is a tri-band router?

A router that broadcasts three WiFi bands at once. Traditional tri-band uses 2.4GHz plus two 5GHz bands; WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 tri-band use 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz. More bands means more capacity for simultaneous devices.

Is tri-band faster than dual band?

Not for a single device. A tri-band router does not raise the top speed of one laptop. It raises the total capacity of the network, so many devices can each hold their full speed at the same time.

Will a tri-band router work with my internet provider?

Yes. Routers are not tied to a provider. Any tri-band router here works with Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, AT&T Fiber, Verizon Fios, T-Mobile Home Internet and every other ISP, as long as you connect it to your existing modem or gateway.

Do I need a tri-band mesh system?

If your mesh nodes connect wirelessly and you care about speed in the far rooms, yes. If you can run Ethernet between nodes (wired backhaul), a dual band mesh system performs just as well.
