The 870 doubles the streams on 5 and 6 GHz and adds a 10 Gig internet port, which only matters on 5 to 10 Gbps fiber. The 970 is the flagship, with a fourth radio reserved for the router-to-satellite link and 10 Gig ports on every unit. The newer 370 is a dual-band WiFi 7 set with no 6 GHz band, aimed at homes that want the current standard on a budget.

The WiFi 6 and 6E Orbi Line: 960, 860, 850, 760, 750, and 350

These are the systems to buy if your plan is gigabit or slower and you want a dedicated backhaul band, which every tri-band model here has. The 850 and 860 are the same AX6000 radio; the 860 adds a 10 Gig internet port, an IoT network, and a year of Armor. The 760 is a lighter AX5400 set with a dual-core processor and 1 Gig ports, still rated for 7,500 square feet. The 960 is the WiFi 6E flagship with a 6 GHz band and quad-band design, but at its price the WiFi 7 870 is the better buy today.

What you give up on the WiFi 5 sets: no OFDMA, no 6 GHz, gigabit ports only, and a 1-year factory warranty. Orbi Cable Modem Routers: CBR750 and CBR40

Two Orbi models fold a cable modem into the router so one box replaces the rental gateway. The CBR750 pairs a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with the 750 series' AX4200 WiFi 6 radio, is certified with Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox, and takes RBS750 satellites to grow into a mesh. It is the right pick for a cable customer who wants to stop renting and wants Orbi coverage in one purchase.

The CBR40 is the older DOCSIS 3.0 version with AC2200 WiFi 5. It still works on many cable networks, but Xfinity and Spectrum are removing DOCSIS 3.0 modems from their approved lists, and Spectrum's cutoff is October 28, 2026. What Every Orbi Has in Common

Whatever series you pick, the day-to-day experience is the same, which is most of why people stay in the Orbi ecosystem when they upgrade.

How a Mesh Network Works

A traditional router is one transmitter in one spot. Signal weakens with every wall and every foot of distance, so the far bedroom and the back patio get whatever is left. A mesh system replaces that single transmitter with several units spread through the house. Each unit broadcasts the same network, and the units talk to each other over a link called the backhaul, passing your traffic back to the one unit that is plugged into the modem.

The backhaul is where mesh systems differ most. A dual-band mesh shares its 5 GHz band between your devices and the unit-to-unit link, so every hop costs speed. Tri-band Orbi models reserve a whole 5 GHz radio for the backhaul, so the far satellite delivers close to full speed even when the house is busy. The WiFi 7 770 and 870 take a different approach: with Multi-Link Operation they bond 5 and 6 GHz into one link and share it, which works because WiFi 7 has enough bandwidth to carry both jobs. The 970 does both, a reserved 5 GHz band plus 6 GHz, which is why it holds speed at the far end of very large homes.

Coverage numbers add up per unit. A 970 satellite adds roughly 3,300 square feet, a 770 satellite 2,750, an RBK50 satellite 2,500. A 3-pack's rating is the sum of its units in open, wood-framed construction. Brick, plaster, concrete, and metal-backed insulation cut those figures, and multi-story homes need a unit per floor more than they need a bigger model number.

Mesh vs a Single Router vs Router Plus Extenders

A single router is the right answer for apartments and homes under about 1,500 square feet, or any home where the router can sit in the middle. Past that, a bigger router with more antennas buys a little range, but it cannot punch through the fourth wall.

A router plus a range extender is the cheapest fix and the most frustrating one. A classic extender rebroadcasts the router's signal on the same band, which halves throughput on that link, and most create a second network name (Home_EXT) that your phone clings to long after you have walked back to the main router. A router plus wired access points is what a network installer would build: Ethernet to every access point, full speed everywhere, one network name if the gear supports roaming. It is the best-performing option and the most work, because it needs cable in the walls and gear that handles hand-off between access points cleanly. A mesh system is the middle path most homes land on: whole-house coverage, one network name, hand-off that works, and no cabling required. How to Choose Your Orbi

Start with the internet port. If your plan is gigabit or slower, any model with a 1 Gig internet port delivers the full speed you pay for, and the WiFi 6 and WiFi 5 sets in the chart are the value buys. If your plan is 2 to 2.5 Gbps, you need a 2.5 Gig port: Orbi 770, 370, 850, or 960. If it is 5 to 10 Gbps fiber, you need 10 Gig: Orbi 870, 970, 860, or 960.

Then match coverage to the house, rounding up for brick, plaster, or three stories. Then count devices; a home with cameras, smart plugs, and a family's worth of phones and TVs passes 40 quickly, which is the ceiling on the 750 and past the ceiling on the 350. Finally, decide whether you need a dedicated backhaul band. If you can run an Ethernet cable to the far satellite, you do not. If the satellite will sit at the end of a long wireless hop and needs to hold full speed, pick a tri-band model.
